Wickford Little League: Updates
Thursday, November 23
We are thankful for excellent pitching and timely hitting for a cold October Fall Baseball game. We are thankful for a home run derby that brought together two leagues and providing an entire town with tons of excitement. We are thankful for moms and dads and grandparents and step-parents who drive their sons and daughters to games, practices, tournaments, and who then sit and cheer in the blinding sun, the occasion heavy down pour, the blustery conditions, and whatever else New England weather throws at us. We are thankful for the volunteers who clean up the field, who have helped merge two proud leagues, who provide our youth of North Kingstown with a safe place to learn and grow as baseball players. We are thankful to the game of baseball for being the awesome sport that it is. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone at Wickford Little League, North Kingstown American Little League, and your families.

Happy Memorial Day
From all of us at Wickford Little League, have a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend. We are honored to have in our North Kingstown community so many veterans and current service men and women. Their paths have taken them to foreign soil to help protect our great country. Their bravery and unselfishness is to be commended not just this weekend, but everyday, every week, every chance we get. The freedoms we cherish in this country were made secure by those who chose to stand up and protect the United States of America. A salute, a handshake, a hug, and most of all, an appreciation for their service is our duty as Americans for these incredible men and women. Wickford Little League says Thank You for your service.

Great Turnout for Opening Day, 2017
Amazing turnout for today's Wickford and North Kingstown American Little League Opening Day Parade. Teams, coaches, volunteers, and families watched and cheered as the Wickford and North Kingstown Little Leagues marched together. Kids of all ages braved the chilly conditions as they marched from Wickford Middle School, through Wickford Village and ended up at Wilson Park. T-ball, Single A, AA, AAA, and Majors division teams lined up together. Presidents Arnie Sarazen and Todd Mascena said a few words to the crowd. A plaque ceremony in honor of Ed Cooney followed comments by new North Kingstown High School baseball coach Tom Pacia. The Cooney family threw out the first pitch and the ceremonial "Play Ball" marks the offical start of the 2017 Wickford and North Kingstown American Little League season. Great job by all the volunteers to get the fields ready and organize the Opening Day ceremonies. Special thanks to North Kingstown Town Councilman Kevin Maloney for walking with us. Thanks to the North Kingstown Fire Department and the North Kingstown Police Department for keeping the parade route safe. Looking forward to a great season of baseball here in North Kingstown.

AAA and Majors Tryouts Today starting at 9am
Some last minute tips on what to bring to the tryouts today. A love of baseball, a positive attitude, and the feeling that no matter what happens, you tried your best. The glove you are wearing, the bat in your hand, the shoes on your feet, that's all secondary stuff. If your attitude, your sportsmanship, your effort is there today, everything else will fall into place. Good luck to the players, coaches, and volunteers today as we look to shape our AAA and Majors Divisions for the spring. Go Wickford!!!

Award Winners for the 2016 WLL Banquet
Awards and special recognition prizes were handed out during the 2 hour ceremony. The Ed Cooney Award is awarded every year and is given to one player from each major division and AAA team. It is awarded to the player that displays great sportsmanship and fair play throughout the year. WLL puts tremendous emphasis on this award as the league tries to promote fair play, fun and sportsmanship over wins and losses. The Paul J. Dignan Memorial Leadership Award is given to one player from the major division: “In recognition of young leaders who show a zest for life and lift the spirits of all whom they touch.” Every year, the home run champion is recognized. Also honored are the 10, 11, 12 year old District All Star teams, Urwin Friendship All Star team. (9 – 10 year olds), St Greg’s Friendship team (7 – 8 year olds), Major champs, and the AAA champs.
Here is the breakdown of the awards given out for the 2016 Wickford Little League season:

The Paul J. Dignan award was presented by Wickford Little League Vice President, valued sponsor King’s Crossing Golf Club, and proud father Rob McNeil. Rob presented his son, Danny, with the award by delivering a beautiful speech about what this player meant to the league, meant to his teammates, and most of all, meant to his father and coach. Danny jogged up to the podium to greet his father, who met him with a handshake, a hug, and tears in his eyes. It was a special moment that the McNeil family will not soon forget, nor will the close to 100 guests attending the banquet soon forget. Great moment and I was so happy to be a part of this night.

What is OPS and what does it mean for hitters?
Do you ever notice that stat next to batting average labelled "OPS?" It stands for On-base percentage. It is a stat that tells you how often you get on base - hits, walks, or hit by pitches - in relation to how many at bats you have, the walks you earned, the hit by pitches you have, and the sacrifice flies you have hit. All time leader, who else? Ted Williams.

A single word can make someone feel appreciated, feel like their unselfish act didn't go unnoticed, feel like they made a difference in a child's day. I remind my players to make sure they thank their parents for the ride to the game or practice. When a player comes up to me after a game and says "Thanks Coach," it makes me feel better than any hit, run, or pitch thrown in the game. So Thanks Wickford Little League community - players, sponsors, parents, volunteers, coaches - for making baseball an important part of your lives. Thanks to Jan Fucile Swartz for the amazing photo.

The 2016 Lombardi Tournament
Update on the 2016 Lombardi Tournament courtesy of Frank and Trish McGee:
The weather was great, kids had fun and had tons of energy despite the double header games! The games were competitive and the tournament served it's purpose as a great conclusion to the season for AA. The players had a chance to experience being on a team with different coaches and players than regular season. The bats and pitching really came around today and plays in the field were being made!
Frank McGee and Gary Kim shared announcing duties and kept the fans and players engaged with music between innings. A big thank you goes to Kristy Mureddu for volunteering her Sat/Sun morning running the concession stand - even when she did not have a player on the field!
Ronan Gately (tall kid pictured in red at bat) hit an inside the park homerun which really excited everyone!
The teams split the games yesterday. Today, the blue team won game 3 and game 4 ended in a tie.

Happy Memorial Day from Wickford Little League
"And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!"
This quote was taken from a poem by Francis Scott Key called "Defense of Fort McHenry." Key's poem was later transferred into the lyrics for our national anthem "The Star-Spangled Banner." Wickford Little League would like to take a moment to thank the many servicemen and servicewomen in our community and our nation. Many retired and current servicemen and servicewomen have become local doctors, teachers, electricians, business people and are serving our community in other capacities. These men and women sacrificed family time, maybe college or a career, to join the armed forces in defense of our great nation. In your travels this weekend, at a cookout or a family gathering or during Wickford's Annual Memorial Day parade, take a moment to acknowledge their sacrifice. It only takes a few seconds and 5 words to make someone's day.
Thank you for your service.
Have a safe and Happy Memorial Day to all of our Wickford Little League community.

What to do if there is a Rainout?
This spring has been challenging for rain and weather in general. The games are called at the commissioner level. Each division from T-Ball to the Junior/Senior Leagues has a commissioner who will make the call on weather related games. Once the commissioner calls the game, the Facebook page is updated. Also, this website will be updated. As a rule, we try to get this information to you as quickly as we can. Check those sites often during the day or night of your game for any updates. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

AAA Skills and Development Practice - Monday May 16th 5:30 -7:30
Given the huge success of the first night, we would like to have another go at this. We have secured Feurer Park for Monday May 16th from 5:30 to 7:30. Practice will be teaching skills such as double plays, positional awareness, cut-offs from the outfield, as well as personal attention to throwing, hitting, catching, and just about anything we see to make your WLL player better.
This time, I'd like to ask you, the parents, for your feedback. Is there are a particular area of play that you'd like your son or daughter to improve upon? Something that you see in the games that gets your attention. Send me an email and I will go over your requests with the coaches helping out at the clinics. As with Wednesday's practice, we appreciate all the parents assistance on and off the field.
Any questions, let me know. Thanks everyone.

It's Not How Hard You Throw, It's How Well You Throw Strikes
It's not how hard you throw, it's how well you throw strikes. Wickford Little Leaguers take notice of Steven Wright from the Boston Red Sox. Changing speeds, hitting locations on the inside and outside corners, being in a good fielding position after the pitch is thrown. Throwing strikes keeps your fielders alert and in the game. And pitchers, help your team out by throwing strikes and fielding your position.

Saturday May 7th is Picture Day at Wilson Park
Here is some additional information regarding the 2016 Picture Day at Wilson Park:
1. Please make every attempt to be at the photographer at the scheduled time. It is a tight schedule, but the photographer said he can take care of 6 teams per hour.
2. I tried to have all team photos taken prior to their games that day, however with A and Tee Ball, some are set up after their games since they are traveling from Fuerer Park.
3. There are several teams that have a bye that day. If your team has a bye, you are still scheduled to be photographed on Saturday.
4. The photo envelopes will be put above the concession stand for coaches to hand out to parents.
5. If the photographer gets backed up that day, I have listed the game times on the schedule so the photographer knows which teams are more pressing to get photographed due to pending games.

A True Home and Home Series with North Kingstown Little League
For the 2016 Wickford Little League season, teams from the Majors and AAA divisions will be playing teams from the North Kingstown Little League. North Kingstown Little League is based at Signal Rock Field, which is on Signal Rock Rd. If you take Post Rd North, take a right onto Newcomb Rd, which is just past the Quonset Point entrances, Dave's Marketplace, and Kohls. The Bike Path runs parallel to Newcomb Road to your right and the soon to be opened North Kingstown Recreation fields will also be on your right. When you get to the end of Newcomb Rd, make a right onto Fletcher Rd. Follow Fletcher Rd "a few ticks", then make a left onto Signal Rock Rd. Follow that up the hill to the end to find Signal Rock Field.
Signal Rock has two baseball fields, a concession stand, playground, and plenty of parking. There are bleachers which sit between the two fields and there is plenty of seating available on the grass and stands.
To find out when your team is playing against North Kingstown Little League, visit the schedule section of our website. And stay tuned to find out how Wickford Little League and the North Kingstown Little League will be working together in the very near future. Good luck to all the players, coaches, and managers that make all of North Kingstown's Little Leagues so much fun to be a part of.

Local Sponsor Steps Up To The Plate To Help Wickford Little League
Wickford Little League, a tradition in North Kingstown for over 50 years, would like to acknowledge the financial support of local sponsor Rob Levine & Associates. Wickford Little League would also like to recognize the incredible work done by South County landscaping company Hutchins Landscaping for the reconditioning of the batting cages at Wilson Park, North Kingstown.
The batting cages centrally located between the AAA and Majors baseball fields at Wilson Park, North Kingstown, have been reconditioned and are officially open for use. Thanks to the generous donation by Rhode Island business and community leader, Rob Levine & Associates, Wickford Little League was able to move forward with the renovations. South County landscaping company, Hutchins Landscaping, did the renovations on the batting cages. This important upgrade to our facility comes on the heels of the announcement that Wickford Little League and our home field, Wilson Park, will be the host of the 2016 Rhode Island District 11 year Old Championships, to be held this July.
Rob Levine & Associates is a trusted and generous community partner in Rhode Island. “Giving back to the community gives me a sense of accomplishment. To be able to help one person at a time is great. But to be able to have a larger impact by creating change or creating new programs and helping an entire community is amazing.” Some of the other community based programs Rob Levine & Associates supports include adopting a nursery/kindergarten school in Central Falls (The Captain Hunt Early Learning Center), sponsoring the Ocean State Waves Summer Camp (of which his favorite part is the 10-12 scholarships he provides to inner city kids), inviting kids and families from the Little League programs he sponsors up to McCoy Stadium for batting practices and VIP tours as a part of his sponsorship with the Pawsox, sponsoring the newly reopened Newport Skating Center and many many more. Rob Levine and Rob Levine & Associates remain dedicated to promoting getting kids outside and keeping them active, healthy and safe.
Mark Hutchins Landscaping, located in Wakefield, has been supplying Rhode Island with quality landscaping services for over 20 years. Hutchins Landscaping employs a staff of over 30 and their daily work includes fertilization, lawn care, and much more to local schools, ball fields, condominiums, and businesses in Rhode Island. “Basically, we wanted to solve the drainage issue,” stated Hutchins, “and I’m confident we accomplished that at Wilson Park.” Hutchins landscaping did a full scale grading, grubbed the area, then removed weeds and debris, and then regraded the area with blue stone dust. “On some parts of the batting cage area, we actually used the same mix as they have at Fenway Park,” noted Hutchins.

Message from Dan Quarella, Director of Umpires, Wickford Little League
We are asking for kids that have graduated from the majors that would be interested in umpiring. I could use a few more kids that are available during the week. We will hold a quick training session on Friday at Wilson Park from 4:30-5:30 but parents need to send Wickford Little League a message first so I know they are interested and committed. Please message us through our Facebook page, Wickford Little League or via email at email@example.com. Thank you.
