Jackson 96ers Baseball Club: 96ers History
Begun in 1978, the Jackson 96ers have developed into one of the top amateur programs in the south and continually produce some of the top teams in the country. The program started with one American Legion team in 1978.
In 1983, the 96ers made the switch to Connie Mack (AABC) and added the Junior 96ers(15-16 years old)in 1985 to compete in the Mickey Mantle League (AABC).
In 1987, the program added a college team, the College 96ers, that competes in the semi-pro league.
In 1988, the program added the Jackson 86ers(17 year old) to handle the growing need for quality coaching and summer programs at the high school level.
In 1993, the Jackson 96ers affilliated the program with the National Amatuer Baseball Federation and a partnership with the Mississippi NABF was formed.
In 1998, the Jackson 86ers name was changed to the Junior 96ers and the program stopped fielding a 15-16 year old team.
In 2001, the program started playing a fall schedule with the Junior 96ers.
In 2003, the program fielded a 12 year old team that competed in the NABF Freshman Division World Series.
In November of 2003, the Jackson 96ers and the Mississippi NABF were fortunate enough to be selected as the host team and organization for the 2004-2006 NABF Senior Division World Series to be held in Jackson, MS.
In August of 2006, the Jackson 96er's fielded a two 13 year old teams (White and Blue) and a 11 year old team.
In November of 2006, the Jackson 96ers and the Mississippi NABF were fortunate enough to be selected as the host team and organization for the 2007-2009 NABF Senior Division World Series to be held in Jackson, MS.
The Jackson 96ers (18 year olds) have won three NABF Senior Division World Series; 1994, 1996 and 2006. They were also runner-up in the 2002 and 2005 NABF Senior Division World Series. In 2004, the Jackson 96er's placed Third in the NABF SR. Division World Series. The Jackson 96ers won the Connie Mack Southeast Regional (AABC) in 1989 and 1990 and went to the Connie Mack World Series(AABC)in 1989 and 1990. They also won the Connie Mack Mississippi State Championship in 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1993.
The Jackson 96ers (17 year olds) have gone to the NABF High School Division World Series in 1995, were they placed third and in 1997, were they placed 5th.
The Junior 96ers (16 year olds) have gone to the NABF Junior Division World Series (16 year olds) in 1994 and 1995. The Junior 96ers also went to the Mickey Mantle World Series(AABC) in 1988 and 1991. They also won the Mickey Mantle Southeast Regional in 1988 and 1991. The Junior 96ers also won the Mickey Mantle Mississippi State Championship in 1987,1988,1989,1990,1991 and 1993.
The Madison 96ers (12 year olds) played in the NABF Freshman Division World Series in 2003 and 2006.
Since 1978, the number of college and pro players this program has produced each year cannot be matched by any other program in the south. We are proud of the accomplishments of former Jackson 96ers such as Roy Oswalt (Houston Astros) who was named the 2003 NABF Graduate of the Year; Damon Ianelli, Regional Scout for the Colorado Rockies; Mike Federico, Pitching Coach at the University of Memphis; Stephan Waggener, Assistant Coach at the University of Indianapolis and Curt Ford(St. Louis Cardinals),the first 96er to play in the MLB.
