IN THE NET (VOLUME 3) - A REPORT FROM JAKE FINNEY - PLAYING AT THE NEXT LEVEL

image_name2
Jake Finnney In the Net for Fresno Pacific

2010 graduate Jake Finney reports back with some information on how his water polo season is going at Fresno Pacific.

"We played in a tournament down in Southern California and got a chance to matchup against USC and Pepperdine.  USC is the #1 ranked team in the nation and Pepperdine is in the top 10.  I got to play the entire second half of the game against both teams.  It was very intimidating, but I did have a few blocks and played well.

We have played quite a few games since I last wrote.  I have had some playing time in some of the games, and I am still on the travel roster.

We just got back from a tournament in Southern California last weekend.  We went 2-2.  We could have won all four games, but in one game we lost in overtime, and in the other one, we did not play so well.

There is about a month left in the water polo season.  School is moving along as well.  I am very busy, and I have to study a lot to keep my grades up.  So far my college experience has been a lot of hard work and not a lot of free time.  It is worth it though!

I am excited about Christmas break.  We play this Wednesday against Delta.  Then we head down south for another tournament.  I'll write back soon.

Good luck Bulldogs on the rest of your season.

Jake

Varsity Girls On Defense vs Lincoln

The water polo program lost to Lincoln on Tuesday evening but Coach Britt found some bright spots as you will see in his postgame remarks below each game.

"Norman was sick but the girls did a good job of sticking together and played hard.  Daryl in the 1st quarter and Ashley in the last 3 quarters did a great job in the net against a good team and against one of the best players in the state and nation (Ms. Leabo).  Leabo had 3 goals in the first 45 seconds of the game.  We still need to do a better job on our man-up offense."

Varsity Boys 1 2 3 4   Final
Lincoln Trojans 3 8 3 4   18
Tracy Bulldogs  3 0 2 1

Sharpe 1 goal, 1 assist, 6 steals

Phelps 3 goals, 5 steals, 1 block

Samaniego 2 steals

Trew 1 goal, 1 steal, 1 block

Silva 18 saves, 2 steals

"We played a great 1st quarter and the way I thought we could play the whole year.  It's just difficult for our team when the guy who wears white can impact the game so much with his whistle.   Everyone played hard and I thought Conner, Andy, Justin played very good.  Tanner made some great saves and played well too," said Coach Britt

Coach Britt also wanted to give special thanks to the new THS Athletic Director Gary Henderson for bringing out portable lighting so the varsity game did not need to be played in the dark.

ONE SPECIAL WIN, 3 FRUSTRATING LOSSES AT LODI

The Lodi Flames put the heat on the Bulldogs and came up with 3 wins out of the 4 water polo matches on Tuesday afternoon.

JV Girls 1 2 3 4 Total
Tracy Bulldogs 0 2 1 2
Lodi Flames  0 1 2 1

Coaches Comment: "It's nice when the team stays with the coaches plan and does the things that will make you a better water polo player and team.  For the first time in my career, we have beat a Lodi girls team at any level.  Nice job ladies!"

JV Boys 1 2 3 4 Total
Tracy Bulldogs  0 0 1 0
Lodi Flames  7 0 0 0 7

Varsity Girls 1 2 3 4 Total
Tracy Bulldogs  0 1 3 1
Lodi Flames   8 1 4 1 14

Varsity Boys 1 2 3 4 Total
Tracy Bulldogs 2 0 1 0
Lodi Flames  6 8 2 5 21

Coaches Comments:  "The JV boys, varsity girls, and varsity boys lost the swim meet badly.  We played some bad water polo and we are not bad water polo players, but if the swimmers don't swim and water polo players don't show up, we are in trouble.  Bad starts are not going to get it done in the SJAA."

Our next games are varsity only at 3:30 vs Franklin on Thursday.

NEW BOYS BASKETBALL COACH ANNOUNCED AT TRACY HIGH

Doug Silva will be the new boys basketball coach replacing long time coach Paul Demsher.  Doug is a native of Tracy and graduated a Bulldog in 1996.  He attended Delta College and played basketball for the Mustangs for 3 years.  From Delta he received a full scholarship to Idaho State University and played basketball for the Bengals for two seasons.  In college he started every game from his sophomore season on.  He also was the Co-Captain at Delta and at Idaho.

After college, Doug spent some time playing professional basketball in Italy for Pavia Pallacanestro as well as playing in Austria for HB Sacil in St. Polten.

An injury brought Doug back to the states and he finished his college degree.

Doug now works for the One Program which is part of the San Joaquin County Office of Education where he has taught math and health for the past 7 years to at-risk youth.

Coach Silva is looking forward to taking on the challenging assignment as varsity basketball coach.   I hope to bring you more info and interviews with Coach Silva soon on my new site www.tracyhighsports.com

IN THE NET (Volume 2) A REPORT FROM JAKE FINNEY PLAYING AT FRESNO PACIFIC

image_name2
Fresno Pacific and Jake Finney (2nd row, 1st on the left)

Well I have officially finished three weeks of classes at Fresno Pacific.  It has been very tough keeping up with all the material and finding time to study.  Water Polo has been good so far.  I made the travel team and I got to go to the tournament at UC Irvine last weekend.  Unfortunately we went 0-4 in the tournament.  I didn't get any playing time, but I am still happy I am on the travel squad.  We still practice twice a day for water polo, and I have two classes a day.  I don't have much free time as I'm either in practice, class, or studying.

The dorms are fun to be in and we have pretty good size rooms.  It's hard to get sleep sometimes because guys are loud and some stay up pretty late.  It is really on your own shoulders to be responsible and do what your supposed to do.  It is very easy to let your grades slip if you don't manage your time correctly.

So far the water polo team has not been playing that well.  We have a lot of things to work on, but we still have a lot of games left.  I am working really hard to stay as the back-up goalie and to get some playing time.

Our next home game is on October 2 and if anybody would like to come out and watch.

Good luck to all the water polo teams at Tracy High and keep on working hard!     JAKE

JV BOYS PICK UP WIN IN HISTORIC GAME FOR THE NEW LOS BANOS SCHOOL

Pacheco High of Los Banos played their first game in school hisotry today against the Tracy JV.  The Bulldogs did not show any kindness to the new team though as they defeated them 14-9.  "Playing in Livermore yesterday and getting that first game out of our system was a big plus for us," said Coach Keith Britt.  "We improved on some things and still need to do several more things better.  It's a work in progress."

FOUR LOSSES AT LIVERMORE, BUT SOMETHING TO BUILD ON

image_name2

It was cool and breezy in Livermore on Monday afternoon but in the water the boys and girls were locked in a hot battle with Livermore.  Livermore got the best of the Bulldog water polo program, but Coach Britt was optimistic.  "I thought we played pretty well even though the scoreboard would not reflect that.  We got our first game under our belt and we now have something to build on," said Britt.

  • JV Boys lost 13-7
  • Varsity Boys lost 17-4 (video on You Tube  remember to set video player in You Tube to HD)
  • JV Girls lost 4-3
  • Varsity Girls lost 16-6

I was able to drop by and take pictures for about an hour.  My timeframe allowed me to capture JV boys and Varsity boys action.  I'll get video/photos of the girls at an upcoming home game.

IN THE NET......A web blog about water polo at the next level (by Jake Finney, Class of 2010)

image_name2
2010 Grad Jake Finney

For a couple of different sports this year, I've asked recent Tracy High grads who have been recruited to play at the college level, to send me short articles on what it is like to be playing their sport at the next level.  Since Jake Finney got a scholarship at Fresno Pacific as a Water Polo goalie, I thought he would be a good candidate to produce a blog.  Here is Jake's first entry for the 2010 school year.

Hello Tracy High Water Polo players and Bulldog fans - I moved in on August 8th and started training camp on the 9th. We have had (two) three-hour practices each day. It has mostly been conditioning. A typical day has been weightlifting from 9 A.M. till 10:30 A.M, then swimming from 10:30 to 12:00 directly after. We then have practice at night from 6:15 till 9:30 p.m.. The entire 6 hours of practice each day is intense and is exausting. To play college water polo you have to be in extremely good shape so each season starts off with a 2 week training camp like this. There are 25 guys on the team and about 16 will make the travel team. I have been playing well and working very hard so hopefully I will make the bus list. There are two other freshman goalies and one senior goalie. The senior goalie told me I will most likely be the back up goalie and he beleives I will be making the travel team. So far, playing at the college level has been very very tough. Hard work cannot really describe what you have to do to be successful. You really have to give a 100 percent on every drill, lift, swim set, and everything you do. You have to push yourself to your fullest just to be able to be on the team. Our first tournament we are playing UC Irvine, Stanford, and Long Beach. They are some of the top water polo teams in the country. Ill send you some more info next week. Tomorrow is my last day of the 6 hours a day training camp. Class starts on Monday.  Until next time.....Jake.

One week of practice is in the books and the water polo program has spent most of their week at Kimball High.  Looks like next week will begin at Kimball as the water is still not stabilized at Tracy High yet.

On Saturday the boys and girls did an hour of swimming drills followed by an hour of game strategy.

WEB SPONSORS WELCOME

Got a business or service you would like to promote to viewers of this website and the other THS sports.  I'm always in need of web sponors.  For $100 I will run your ad at the top of this page and my six other THS  volunteer websites for one year.  You will be seen by hundreds of visitors per day (for example, over 1,000 hits are received after every football game and approximately 500 visitors view the baseball page after each game in the spring).

I'll take a business card or any info you want to provide and I can turn it into a colorful ad that will fit at the top of my web pages.

Your donation helps to pay for the web administration fees I have to maintain these volunteer sites and it provides me with the technical gear I use to cover the high school sports (such as memory cards, cables, microphones, lighting, storage drives, etc).

If interested, please contact me at stujossey@tracyhighbaseball.com or 209-609-1456
