Former Newark Central Guard Finds new home.......
Former Newark Central standout guard Duquan "Heavy" Leonard will play this Winter at New Jersey City University. Leonard will have three years of eligibility.
He helped lead Central to the Group 2 Finals in 2006 where Central lost to Haddonfield at the RAC. Leonard graduated from Central in 2007 after starting the point position all four years. He finished with 927 points for his career and helped Central turn its program around upon his arrival.
Leonard left Central and enrolled in Cayuhoga JR College in Cleveland where he played his freshman season. Leonard played well at Cayuhoga Juco where he received Div 1 interest from Cleveland St, Toledo and Wright St. Leonard didn't return to school his soph season due to problems at the school once the Head Coach was fired.
Leonard returned to Newark and started working. He now feels he is ready to return back to school to play basketball and continue his education. Leonard is probably one of the most underrated guards to come out of Newark the past five years. He will make some noise at Jersey City, mark my words......Good Luck Heav from the Central and Zoo Crew family.

Central finishes 20-7 on the season....
Newark Central finished the season with a 1-point loss in the Section Championship to cross town rival University 61-60. Central should have won the game but experience kicked in during the final minute and also some questionable calls down the stretch.
After losing in the 1st round in last years State Tournament to Newark Tech, the Blue Devils were a little more focused this year playing their 1st three games at the tournament at home. Central defeated Weehawken, Bloomfield Tech and Harrison.
The Blue Devils finished the season 13-0 at home and also captured the SEC Liberty Division Conference Championship with a 12-1 record. The home winning streak is 15 in a row and the conference winning streak is 12 straight. So the Blue Devils have some streaks to build on for next year.
Central returns a strong core of this seasons player's. The team will lose leading scorer Avent Holston, 1,000 point scorer in Johnathan Williams, Andrew Tomlin and Kevin Green. The Blue Devils return 6'5 Kameen McPleasant, 5'9 Daquan jones, 6'1 Stephon Woodson, 5'8 Alif McCray, 6'2 Rodney Carney, 6'3 Patrick Cole and 6'8 Ramon Johnson. All returning player's saw action this past season.
Next year may be the Devils year but this past season wasn't bad either as Coach McCray won 20 games for the 1st time in his 4 year Varsity career. This spring/summer the team will play in tournaments/league's to get ready for next season. The 1st tournament will be the Newark Mayor's Tournament from March 29- April 3rd. The team will also participate in the Zoo Crew Summer League, Caldwell Team Camp and Rutgers Team camp.

Central High upcoming season......
The Central High basketball team finished 13-12 last season and returns their 3 top scorers from that team. SR Johnathon Williams returns after leading the team in scoring(22.4), and steals(3.3). Williams also shot 57% from the field and needs 76 points to crack 1,000 pts this season. Also returning is SR Avent Holston who averaged 14.7 points and team leading 9.8 rebounds and is a double double waiting to happen. JR Kameen McPleasant who is in his 3rd year of organized basketball added 7.2 pts and 5.8 rebounds in his 1st varsity campaign last season. I personally believe this will be his breakout season. Rounding out the returning starters is SR Kevin Green who led the team with 4.3 assist average.
The team has been playing together since April playing in various events in the past 7 months. The team played 48 games finishing with a 35-13 record. The team played in the following events;
Providence Jam Fest AAU(Providence, RI) -(1-2)
Newark Mayor's Tournament(Newark) - (2-1)
Southern Invitational AAU(Hampton, VA) - (0-3)
HBC Tournament(Neptune, NJ) - (1-1)
Caldwell College Team Camp(Caldwell, NJ) - (8-0)
Rutger's Team Camp(Piscataway, NJ) - (2-2)
Zoo Crew Summer League(Newark) - (5-4)
Westside Park Summer League(Newark) - (7-0)
Zoo Crew Fall league(Newark) - (9-0)
With the addition to this years squad of JR Patrick Cole who transferred from(St. Anthony) in midseason and was limited to JV action for the Blue Devils last year. Cole brings another scorer and ballhandler to the Central team. SR Andrew Tomlin another player that came in midseason last year from(Old Bridge) but never really became comfortable in the line up understands his role on the team and gives us an another outside threat and another ballhandler to the team. JR Tyrell Alston returns after missing 16 games last year with a broken wrist. Alstons defense, ballhandling skills and rebounding will be a great asset to the team. Alston was predicted to be the starting PG last season before suffering a broken wrist in the opening scrimmage. SR Jamaal McClendon also returns and didn't play much last season but looks to receive playing time this season. McClendon brings energy and rebounding strength to the team. JR Daquan Jones also returns as he started the last half of the season last year, but will be asked to come of the bench to provide energy and defense this season. The JV team finished 19-3 last season and JR's Stephon Woodson and Ibn Ali will see some action to fill the void created by Johnson who will become eligible in February. JR Rodney carney will also look to see some time in a crowded backcourt.
The team has also received two promising JR transfers from Science Park. Alif McCray a PG who brings defense and strengthens the backcourt with his ballhandling and passing. McCray will also bring a winning attitude as he captured two State Championships under his belt with Science. Also Ramon Johnson a 6'8 player who will help the inside game of Central once he jumps in the line-up in February. Johnson will be the push the Blue Devils will need to challenge for the County, Conference and State titles, the Blue Devils have their goals set for.
McCray or Johnson didn't participate with the Blue Devils in most of the league and tournaments. They actually only played in the Zoo Crew fall league.
The season looks very bright for the Blue Devils the next two years. The team is very talented and can pose match-up problems as the team has multiple player's who can play more than one position. If they come out hungry i don't think it's a team that can match the talent. The games have to be played and no games are won on paper, they are won on the court.
I'll keep you posted.
Monday, November 30

Two player's transfer into Newark Central......
Two jr's have left defending Group 2 Champions Science Park and enrolled in Newark's Central High. Ramon Johnson a 6'7 forward and Alif McCray a 5'9 guard.
Newark Central had a good spring/summer and already returns key player's from last years team with four starters returning and the addition of JR Patrick Cole who transferred in from St. Anthony in the middle of last season and finished his sophmore campaign playing on a JV team that finished 19-3 last season. Central returns 3rd team All County player SR Johnathan Williams 22.4 pts a game last season and also was 2nd in the county in scoring and needs about 70 pts to score 1,000, 2nd leading scorer SR Avent Holston 14.2 pts and 9.3 rebounds along with SR Kevin Green who led the team in assist 4.3 and keeps everyone happy with his ballhandling skills and rounding out the returning floor is JR Kameen McPleasant who averaged 7 pts and 5 reb last season(named 1st team All-Essex soph last season) and arguably the most improved player on the team from last season. Also pushing for playing time this year will be JR Tyrell Alston who missed most of last season with a broken wrist, SR Andrew Tomlin who transferred in the middle of the season last year from Old Bridge, SR Jamaal McClendon who will be looking to fill the 5th spot, jr's Kevin Bell(JV leading scorer last season), Daquan Jones(named 1st team All-Essex soph last season), Ibn Ali, Stephon Woodson and Rodney Carney along with Ramon Johnson and Alif McCray will be pushing for playing time.

HBC results.....
On Saturday afternoon Newark Central traveled down to the HBC held at Rebounds in Neptune, NJ. The opening game was against a tough Monmouth Regional team which Central prevailed 47-46 as SR Johnathan Williams fed JR Kameen McPleasant for a lay-up as the buzzer sounded. Central has been in the HBC the past four years and recorded their 1st opening round win. Johnathan Williams hit big three with 13 seconds remaining to pull Central within one. Monmouth missed a one n one and Williams raced down the court and found McPleasant. The team played without Patrick Cole, Tyrell Alston and Avent Holston.
In the next game Central had to go up against St. Patrick's. I was looking forward to the game as it would shed light on where the Blue Devils actually fit in as Central has been playing well. St. Patrick's jumped out early and Central never recovered. I felt the team was playing well as they handled the full court pressure of St. pat's but couldn't finish on the offensive end. With about a minute remaining in the 1st half a minor altercation ensued between a St. Pat's player and a Central player. I blame the officials for everything leading up to it and the tournament directors for everything after the incident. Yeah a Central kid through a punch and hit one of their player's and that was the end of it, until two of St. Pat's player's swung at air and people interevened.
The Hoop Group staff showed considerable favortism to Boyle and crew, but they won't have to worry about getting another dollar from me.

Virginia Jam Fest Updates
The Newark Central Varsity team traveled to Hampton, VA this past wekend for the Hoop Group Southern jam Fest at the Boo Williams Sports Complex.
The team participated in the 17-u division. We didn't win any games but the team played well together as they were playing against AAU teams.
In Game 1 - Due to hitting traffic we had to play as soon as we exited the van and faced DC Assaults B team out of Washington DC. Central fell down 9-0 as DC Assault hit its 1st three 3-pointers. Central never recovered from the 9 point deficit and fell 71-37. Junior guard Johnathan Williams led Central with 15 points and soph Patrick Cole added 12 points.
In Game 2 - The Blue Devils let this game slip away going against a team from North Carolina. Central trailed 8-0 in this game, but fought back and trailed by 5 points most of the game but couldn't get over the hump and fell 70-49. Johnathan Williams scored 12 points in the loss.
In Game 3 - The Blue Devils went up against Triple Threat out of MD. Central led by 10 points at the half with the suprise play of Soph Ibn Ali who scored all 12 of his points in the 1st half. In the 2nd half Triple Threat controlled the boards and held a three point lead with 2.8 seconds remaining. Kevin(KJ) Bell came off the bench and hit a 40 footer as time expired to send the game into OT. Central couldn't hold on and fell 73-69. Soph Kameen McPleasant scored 16 points and Johnathan Williams added 14 points.
Central will play next in the Rutger's Team Camp in New Brunswick June 13-14. The current record for the Varsity team is 3-6 for the Spring.

Providence update.....
The Newark Central basketball team will be playing the AAU season together. The team traveled to Providence RI this weekend for the Hoop Group Jam Fest.
Central is listed as the NJ Blue Devils on the schedule. On Friday evening the Blue Devils jumped out to a 8-1 lead against CMAC out of Massauchussetts. Blue Devils started playing lazy defense and fell behind by 15 points at the half. In the 2nd half the Blue Devils continued to play no defense and lost the game 69-39. The team played without its' top two scorers this past season in JR's Johnathan Williams and Avent Holston.
Soph Tyrell Alston played very well in the game and looked like his old self before a wrist injury cost him 15 games this past season. Soph's Kameen McPleasant, Patrick Cole, Dequan Jones and Ibn Ali also played well.
The Blue Devils will go againt Boo Williams at 3:40pm today at Providence College.

More Providence scores....
On Saturday afternoon the Blue Devils went up against Boo Williams AAU team out of VA. The Blue Devils were overmatched as Boo Williams didn't have a player on the team under 6'4. The final score was 69-31. Soph guard Patrick Cole led the Devils with 7 points.
On Saturday evening the Blue Devils recorded their 1st win of the tournament knocking off Team Albany out NY. The Blue Devils pulled out a 69-60 win as Soph's Tyrell Alston 18 points and Kameen McPleasant 17 points led the way. Soph William Porter chipped in with all of his 8 points in the 1st half win the Blue Devils opend up a 21 point halftime lead.
The tournamen was a good experience for the team as we played in the 17's division when the majority of the team is 16. The experience will help when the highschool season starts next season. The team will be off to Hampton VA in two weeks to play against some more top notch competition. Hopefully our two top scorers from this past season will attend in JR's Johnathan Williams 22.0 pts and Avent Holston 14.0 pts, they were absent this weekend.

Newark Central starts AAU team......
The Newark Blue Devils will begin playing in various AAU Tournaments. The team will consist of only Newark Central player's that participated the previous season on Freshman, JV and Varsity. The age groups will be 15's, 16's and 17's.
This past season Central finished the season 13-12 with a 1st round State Tournament loss to Newark Tech 60-53, a team which Central defeated by 24 points in the Essex County Tournament a few weeks earlier. A lack of inexperience and poor free throw shooting showed in Central's final game of the season played at Newark Tech.
Central returns 13 player's off that team for next season. The top four scorers return as central started 1 senior, 2 juniors and 2 sophmores. Junior guard Johnathan Williams had a breakout year after averaging 13 points as a soph. He averaged 22 points this season and scored 30 or more in 3 games. Junior forward Avent Holston who transferred in from Weequahic added 14 points and a team leading 9 rebounds. Soph Kameen McPleasant he provides a match-up nightmare for opponents added 7 points and 6 rebounds in his 1st season on the varsity level after playing on the freshman team last season. Junior point guard Kevin Green who was projected as a back-up had to grow up fast to take over the starting job. Green led the team in assist with 4.0 as he spent last season leading the jv in scoring. Soph guard Daquan Jones also a transfer who came in from Shabazz provided lock up defense as he routinely defended the other teams best guard. Jones also inexperienced played on the freshman team at Shabazz last season. Soph guard William Porter provided spark off the bench and helped Central pull out some games with his smart play on the court. Porter was at University last season where he played on the jv team. He's tough going to the basket and has good range on his jumpshot. He will be looking for major minutes next season. Soph guard Tyrell Alston who was penciled in as the starting guard the minute he transferred from Science Park, had an up and down season after suffering a broken wrist in the 1st scrimmage of the season. He missed 15 games and never fully recovered from the wrist injury. He has a swagger to his game that is unteachable and ahould see major minutes in the backcourt next season. Junior Jamaal Mcclendon will provide help in the post for McPleasant. jamaal has a great upside and will be the defensive presence in the paint Central missed this season. Jamaal was on the JV last season and never adjusted to the varsity level. He has shown flashes of his potential during the limited minutes he played this year. A key addition that will strengthen the backcourt will be Soph Patrick Cole who transferred from St. Anthony during mid-season and finished out the season on jv. Cole brings a basketball IQ that's makes player's around him better. He can play three positions and maybe the missing peice the Blue Devils have missed this past season. Looking for time in the backcourt will be Jr Andrew Tomlin who also transferred in during the season from Old Bridge. Tomlin has good range from three and didn't quite get adjusted to the Blue Devil system. He will also fight for time in backcourt that will be crowded. Soph Kevin Bell who will be hard to keep off the floor due to his intensity and his desire to win as well as his accuracy from 3-point range and his scoring ability from anywhere on the floor. Other player's looking to see some action will be FR Marcus Fleming, Soph's Stephon Woodson, Ibn Ali, Luis Reyes, Kareem Davis and Daniel Tucker.
The future looks bright for Newark Central as practices i see will be like old Zoo Crew practices as player's will be fighting to see some action on the court.
The team will play about 40 games during the spring, summer and fall. Also Central will participated in the C division of the new Conference alignment with the likes of Barringer, West Essex, Orange, Verona to name a few teams. The out of conference schedule will be upgraded as we will look to play a more competitive non-conference schedule.
To view the upcoming schedule look at the calendar to your left.

New Providence 64 - Central 60 OT
Central traveled to New providence on Tuesday evening for a rematch of an earlier game in the season in which New Providence won 53-35. Central couldn't hit a field goal in the OT. Junior guard kept his hot streak going with 30 points and 5 steals in the loss. Junior Avent Holston added 13 points, 7 assist and 16 rebounds. Johnson 52 - Central 48
Central lost a heartbreaker as they knocked off Johnson by 39 points in an earlier meeting. The team was without 2nd leading scorer and leading rebounder Avent Holston. The team also may have been looking past Johnson toward a match-up later in the week with Newark tech.
Central came out flat and didn't play together and trailed by 14 points at the half. The 2nd half was little different as central took a one point lead in the 4th, but costly turnovers hurt the team down the stretch. Johnathan Williams was help to 16 points. Junior Kevin Green added 10 points in the loss. Senior Larry farmer pulled down a career high 14 rebounds.
Central 78 - Newark Tech 55
Off of two tough losses this week, their wouldn't be a letdown in the Preliminary Round of the 43rd Essex County Tournament against #20 seeded Newark tech in a game played at Central. Senseless violence.......
The pas two weeks have been rough in Newark. Numerous people have been shot or killed with ties to the Zoo Crew Basketball Program.
On October 18th Richard "Hood" Kelley was killed in front of the Zoo Crew Store. Hood was a big supporter of the Zoo crew College team that won the championship at Branch brook Park this past summer. His murder has been solved but a motive hasn't been announced.
On October 22nd Akeem Jones was shot numerous times on Chadwick Ave. He's currently doing okay. He is the older brother of Zoo Crew player and Central player SO. Daquan Jones. Doctors say he will make a full recovery. His shooting remains unsolved.
On October 24th Angelina "Big" Evans was shot and killed on the day senseless violence was going on In Newark. She was on her way to pick up her two kid's from school while she had the thrird child with her. She was shot multiple times and her killers have been caught. I watched Big grow up and her brother Jermaine "Muka" Evans played on the 1st Zoo team i started in 1996. He is currently an aspiring rapper living in South Carolina. It was good to see Muka at the wake, but the circumstances were unfortunate.
Also on October 24th former Zoo Crew player Edward "ER" Ricks was shot in the elbow by the same assailants that killed Big and Hood. ER has a broken arm and will make a full recovery. ER also played on the same team as Jermaine.
I'm not sure the connection all this has, but all the victims are part of the Zoo Crew family. I would like yall to keep them in your prayers and hope the senseless violence stops.
The young guys that were arrested for these crime were frequent visitors to the Zoo Crew Store to purchase items.

Central finishes 5-8 in Team Camps.............
This past week Newark Central played in the HBC Classisc at Rutger's(NB) and at the Caldwell College Team Camp. Despite playing with only one player that had varsity experience the team played well.
On Saturday in the HBC Central opened up with Ridgefield Park losing the game 59-50. The 2nd game came against the NIA School out of Newark who played with all 5th year player's. The was 31-9 at the half but the Blue Devils never quit and actually outscored the Nia School 28-26 in the 2nd half to drop a 57-37 decision. The final game on Sunday Central fell behind Governour Livingston 16-0 nothing before closing the gap to 25-22 at the half. Central dropped a 45-40 decision.
On Sunday evening in the Caldwell College Team camp Central opened the camp with two straight victories. The Blue devils defeated St. Joe's(WNY) 46-35 and St. Mary's(Ruth). 47-43.
On Monday evening the inexperience took over as the Blue Devils led Millburn 20-8 at the half. Defense and mental errors allowed Millburn back into the game and Millburn pulled out a 57-53 victory. Also on Monday Central faced Roselle and dropped a 50-39 decision as the Blue Devils couldn't take care of the ball in the final 5 minutes.
On Tuesday evening the Blue Devils played hard but couldn't get over the hump and fell to EO Campus 47-42. In the final game of the night Central led St. Mary's Rutherford 46-44 with 20 seconds remain ing and again inexperience took over and Central lost at the buzzer 48-46.
On Wednesday Central got back on the winning track defeating St. Joes(WNY)58-50. In the 2nd game of the night Roselle broke open a close game by defeating Central 54-37.
The final day was Thursday and Central defeated Caldwell 42-37 after trailing 27-12 at the half. In the final game Central needed OT to knock off West Essex winning 52-49. Central finished 5-5 at Caldwell College.
Overall with the lack of experienced returning varsity player's, i felt the Blue Devils overall played well. This past seasons leading scorer rising junior guard Johnathon Williams had a good overall camp and showed he will be a problem come regular season as he led the team in scoring throughout. The surprise of the camp was rising junior guard Marquis Baker who led the jv in scoring last year. It was times in games where he couldn't miss a shot and played great defense all week. Baker complimented Williams very well in the backcourt. In the post where Central has lacked scoring the past two years rising sophmore forward Kameen McPleasant showed he will attract a lot of attention in the down low area. McPleasant at 6'5 was a mismatch for player's his size as he took them away from the basket and made strong moves to the basket and finished when he pulled down offensive rebounds. Also a surprise in the paint was rising sophmore 6'2 forward Amara Camara who was relentless on the boards and brings needed leadership and toughness to the team.
All of the player's who played were on the jv team last season except for Johnathon Williams. Rising sophmore guard Kevin Bell played well in some games and lacked experience in others, rising junior guard Kevin Green also showed flashes that he may help the 2008-09 team this season. Rising juniors 6'6 Jamaal Mcclendon, 6'0 guard Farod Mosley, 5'8 guard Lamar West and 6'0 guard Michel Matchelo all figure to be in the mix when the season starts. 6'5 rising senior forward Curtis Elliott continues to improve and was the only player who will be a senior this coming season.
The Blue Devils were without 2nd leading scorer from last season 6'0 rising senior guard Eric Smith, 6'2 rising senior forward Jacky Francois and 6'0 rising senior guard Raheem Dayes. If everyone is on the same page the sky is the limt for this team.
