Krusen Field

Recently the ZPAL organization asked to be placed on the agenda before City Council of Zephyrhills.  They asked City Council for exclusive use of the Krusen Field until 2011.  We were informed of this meeting at the last minute but fortunately were able to attend and speak at the meeting.  Mr. LaMonte asked city council to grant ZPAL Inc. exclusive use of Krusen Field because he stated that their parents and children did not like sharing use of the field with our organization and did not like alternating use of the practice fields.  They wanted exclusive use to include practice and game fields, concession stands, tower, etc.  Mr. LaMonte further stated that ZPAL Inc. had done such wonderful things for this community in regards to the field and it's growth.  However, City Council members were quick to realize that both organizations were one until our 2008 season began and therefore told him that it was the members of both organizations who performed all these wonderful things in this community.  They further realized that the shared use of the field had not been fairly shared.  Mr. LaMonte attempted to gain use of the field by phoning to have all his parents that were practicing for their playoff games and superbowl leave the field and storm the meeting.  This tactic did not go over well with the council members however.  Ultimately, City Council Members decided that they would not make a decision that would leave any children in this community without use of the park.  They stated that this is a public park and that NO ONE can claim rights to the field, other than the general public.  Council members further decided that they would not make a decision or determination as to how the field would be shared or divided.  They advised the City Manager and Parks and Recreation to work with BOTH organizations to come to a FAIR division of use of the fields and that if that was not an option for one of the organizations then they should choose to look for an alternative location.  As we have said time and time again, we have no problems with fairly sharing use of Krusen Field with any other organization.  This is about the children in our community and should not be about adult egos or aspirations.  We have met with City Manager Steve Spina and Parks and Recreations Director Rick Moore. We have given our opinions on what we would like to see happen in deciding the shared use of the field and wholeheartedly hope that this situation can be worked out beneficially for both organizations of children and for the betterment of both leagues. We will try to keep you updated on the outcome of these discussions and look forward to a better 2009 season.  We have a strong new board of directors in place and are making great plans for the upcoming season.  Look forward to some very positive changes and possibilities for our children.  Great feats are performed not through strength but through perserverance.  ZPPAL were be preserved for years to come!
