Tryouts

|
Probably the single most important thing you can do if you are running your clubs tryouts is to plan.
Too many tryouts are left to the imagination and to the last minute. This leads to confusion and confusion generally leads to upset parents.
And planning is not limited to the drills that you intend for the children to participate in. You must plan for how you will rate your players, who will rate your players, how you will identify your players, and what skills or tactical abilities are more important than others.
You must plan out your time so that you can accomplish what you want in the time frame provided. You must have contingency plans if things do not go correctly. All of this takes some up-front effort on your part, but in the final analysis it is well worth it. And after you execute it for the first time, you have a tryout plan that you can tweak and build upon for years to come.
Here is how our club generally goes about conducting tryouts for our U8 and U9 Tournament Teams and our first two years of travel, U10 and U11.
