  Keeper

Introduction to the Keeper
The Keeper, perhaps the single most important player on your team, and perhaps the most neglected in terms of training.

Through the years I have found that most coaches don't know what to do with the keeper in practice other than to shoot at them.

Therefore I have gathered in this section of the website, some very basic keeper warmup and game-like exercises so that you can help this important position player achieve their very best.

Please take the time to look through the offerings here and comment on them on the Message Board

Ideas from Dan Gaspar of Star Goal Keeping Academy, Kim Wyant of the US National Team and LI Lady Riders and Bobby Muuss of UCONN

Stance and Balance
These are exercises to help stance and balance that I saw Kim Wyant, former National Team keeper and now the keeper for the Long Island Lady Riders, demonstrate at the 1998 LIJSL soccer convention

Collapse Dive
This is an exercise and a progression for teaching the Collapse Dive that I got from a local TV program called Soccer Zone

Cutting Down the Angle
This is a simple demonstration to explain how to cut down the angle on a shooter.

It is adapted from things I learned a long time ago as an ice hockey coach.

See I knew that all of those years on the ice would come in handy one day.

Forward and Backward Footwork Drill
This is one I adapted from my hockey coaching. It teaches agility, change of direction and concentration.

Square of Death
This is a footwork exercise that I saw Bobby Muuss, Men's Keeper Coach for UCONN do at the 1999 Suffolk County Soccer Coaches Association winter clinic. Excellent agility, explosiveness and anaerobic conditioning.

Rapid Fire 4 Ball Exercise
I saw Kim Wyant, former National Team Keeper and now keeper with the LI Lady Riders, demonstrate this one at the 1998 LIJSL Soccer Convention.

Kim stressed having intelligent shooters, as well as accurate shooters in this exercise since it is for the keeper, not the shooters.

Defending the Low Cross
This is a coaching note I excerpted from the soccer-coach-l mailing list

Defending the High Cross
I have transcribed my notes from the Suffolk County Soccer Coaches Association (SCSCA) winter clinic on the subject of Defending the High Cross.

This was a session put on by Bobby Muuss, goalkeeper coach for the UCONN Men's Team. (Final Four participants this year) For any of the coaches and parents out there who have ever had the pleasure of seeing Bobby put on a clinic, you'll know that not only is he a great coach, but he is an extremely funny guy who can really hold your attention.

I have added to what Bobby taught a number of diagrams to hopefully clarify the text.

Handling the Short Hop
This is another exercise submitted to eteamz by Jim Turpin, a UUSF D license coach from Hamilton and is an innovative way to teach handling the short hop.

Implementing the GK in Team Training
The first part of this section I learned, again from Bobby Muuss, at the 1999 SCSCA winter clinic.

The 1 v 1 exercise in the latter section I got from Frank Schmidt from an episode of "Soccer Zone" a local soccer TV program
