  Welcome

Welcome to the Youth Soccer Coach, a website I have created, with the help of my technologically inclined daughters, to further soccer coaching education over the internet.

My daughter has played soccer in the Commack Soccer League since she was four years old. She is now playing Under 19, Division 1 for Commack, in the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL)and has played varsity soccer for her high school since joining as a freshman.

This year the team won the Class AA ( Large Schools) Suffolk County Championship for the first time in the school's history.

When she started playing soccer, I started learning how to coach the sport. Drawing on decades of experience as an ice hockey coach I found the first thing I knew was how much I didn't know.

So I asked, and I watched and I went to clinics and I went to licensing courses and I talked with people like yourselves, fellow coaches and trainers, who have helped me immensely over the years.

So now, in the spirit of the game, I am going to help the next generation and make many of the coaching notes collected from NSCAA clinics, LIJSL coaching courses and other coaching associations around the country available as PDF files on this website.

This site now has over 180 Coaching Notes and over 450 pages of text and illustrations.

My personal thanks to the many coaches who have visited and sent me ideas for exercises on this site.

Remember, if you need to you can download a free copy of the Adobe Acrobat Reader from Adobe Acrobat

Updated Ball Mastery Section

Multiple Touches on the Ball = Ball Mastery = Success

My daughter's Under 12 teammates asked me once .."Why do we do (foot) skills every practice?"

And now with my daughter at U17 and playing varsity soccer I still get the question.

Well I thought the reason was obvious but I guess it wasn't.

Simply put, footskills are the bases for everything else we do in soccer. Teams from Anson Dorrance's UNC national champions to the Men's and Women's National Teams do footskill work every single day.

When a player becomes comfortable with the ball at their feet, when the act of dribbling becomes instinctive, the level of enjoyment of this great game becomes even greater.

Identifying Talent in the Women's Game

This article was written by Jeff Pill and submitted as an eteamz "Tip". I thought that it was very good and bears re-presenting here.

Jeff Pill is a USSF A license coach who also holds a Advanced National Diploma from NSCAA

Jeff has been one of the Women’s National Staff Coach for Region 1. His duties have included working with the Women’s National Team programs and identifying and developing the next generation of World Champions. Jeff continues to work in this capacity for US Soccer, working closely with the state and
regional ODP programs, attempting to raise the standard of play from the grassroots level on up to the professional leagues.

Passing Pattern # 8 Added

The last of the Passing Patterns from Gary Rue's series is Check, Drop and Penetrate.

Similar to Check Drop and Spin this pattern adds a penetrating pass to a Target player.

I have added the seventh in a series of passing patterns.

Look for a 7th to be added in the near future Drop and Penetrate

Under 10 Passing - Pass and Move Drill

A simple passing/receiving drill incorporating several different types of passess and movement off the ball.

Great exercise for that comp team just starting out

Three Man Front Attacking Options

I have added a section written by Gary Rue, a high school coach from Frankfort, Kentucky on several of the myriad number of options that can be used with a three man attack.

It is located in the Pass and Receive Section of the web site

Switching the Point of the Attack

Hey! Nice Switch!
A new section on Switching the Point of the Attack has been added.

The basis for this section was a seminar I attended last winter given by the Suffolk County Soccer Coaches Association. One of the guest coaches was Mike Smolens of the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

His seminar is given in three pieces here..Fundamental - Takeovers, Match Related and Match Condition.

The section was then added to by some of the top coaches from the soccer-coach -l mailing list, Gary Rue, Dan Roderbush, Mike McNeish, Scott Placek and others.

Please feel free to comment on any of the exercises here.
