Cary YMCA Co-Ed Volleyball Leagues: Rules

Rules for Cary YMCA adult co-ed volleyball league
CARY FAMILY YMCA VOLLEYBALL RULES
(Revised 10/18/04 – KL)

1. A roster minimum of six players is recommended for each team. Each team must have three players ready to play within 5 minutes after scheduled starting time or a forfeit will result. Forfeits count as losses and cannot be made up.
2. Each match will consist of 2-3 games that are rally scored. (The first two games will be scored to 25 with the third game going to 15 if needed). If the score is tied at 24-24 or 14-14, play continues until one team has a lead of two points or a cap of 30 or 17 is reached. If during a match, one team wins the first two games, then a third game will not be required. If there is additional time, a third game may be played "for fun or practice." If the first two games are split, then a third game will be played to determine the winner of the match. Every effort will be made to give each team a full 60 minutes of court time.
3. Each team will be allowed two thirty second time outs per game. Players are to remain on the court during time outs.
4a   Substitutions
   *    Each team may substitute by continuous substitution on the serve rotation or by subbing in and out of the front and back rows, so
that everyone gets equal playing time. Each player attending a game must play in the game.
4b   Non-team member substitutions
v        No player may sub in for an absent team member during playoffs. No exceptions.

v        During the regular season, a non-team member may substitute only when a regular team member is absent. The substituting player must be of the same gender and the opposing team captain must approve the substitution.

v        Teams with 7 or more players, may only use non-team member subs if they will have fewer than 6 team members in attendance.
v        Teams may only use a maximum of two non-team member substitutions in one night.

5. The lights and ceiling are playable if ball returns on your own side.
6. Backboard play- if the ball is bumped up and touches the backboard, taking away the second and/or third hit and a legal player is in position to play the ball, a replay will be called.
7. Open volleyball practice times will be on Saturday afternoons – check current gym schedule, available at the front desk. (This is open volleyball time and NOT exclusive to league members.)
8. Since this is a Co-ed league, it is a requirement that each team has at least one female on the court during the match. If a female is not able to make the match, the official on site will make a decision as to whether or not the team will forfeit.
9. At the end of the regular season, every captain will be called and informed of their team tournament playing time and date. Each captain is responsible for calling their team to inform them of the times and dates of the tournament.
10. Service change: (changed during winter league on 1/8/01) "net-serves" will count. A "net-serve" is simply any serve that touches the net but still makes it over to the opponents’ side of the court.
11.        Arguing calls with the referee will not be allowed. If there is a question for the referee, it should be done through the team’s captain. Additionally, questions about rules, regulations, etc… should not be directed towards the referee during the course of a match. If there are questions, they should be presented by the team’s captain during a break.

12.        Effective winter league 2002: “Player evaluations” in the “A” and “B” leagues will begin. An explanation of what “player evaluations” are can be found at the front desk as well as on the YMCA Volleyball bulletin board, located near the entrance of Gym 3.

13. Besides the rules listed above, the YMCA will base most of its remaining rules on the current “USA Volleyball” official rulebook for 2000-2001. For more info on these rules, you can visit www.usavolleyball.org
