Brady, Crone Swat Hornets
John Crone and Steve Brady went deep and Yorktown came from behind to defeat the Herndon Hornets 8-7 Monday afternoon at Annandale High School. Crone and Doug Waller each had three hits to lead an eleven hit attack against the third seed from the Concorde District.

The game was scheduled for Yorktown but after days of rain the Greenbrier field was unplayable. The game was played as the second game of a doubleheader, following Annandale's thrilling win over W.T. Woodson.

Herndon jumped in front with two unearned runs in the second inning. Yorktown came back with three in the bottom of the third. Sam Bruno got things started with a one out single. He stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored ahead of John Crone's home run to left centerfield.

Herndon tied it up in the fifth on an error, steal groundout and sacrifice fly. The Hornets then exploded for four in the top of the sixth, highlighted by a Brandon Guyer three run homer. Yorktown entered the bottom of the sixth down four and six outs from the end of the season.

With one out, Doug Waller legged out an infield single, his third hit of the afternoon. Tony Esquith followed with a single. Then, with two outs Sam Bruno hit a ground ball to third for what seemed to be the third out. The thirdbaseman bobbled the ball, loading the bases and giving Yorktown life. Matt Gilman walked to drive in a run. Then, on a one and two pitch, Steve Brady hit a grand slam to put the Patriots in the lead.

Brady yielded a leadoff single in the seventh and then retired the next three in order. The win raised Brady's record to 7-0 on the season.

The Patriot's came through with several excellent defensive plays in support of Brady. In the first, with two on and two out, Matt Gilman ranged far into right field to catch a fly ball for the third out. In the second, Todd Grabowski raced into right center to flag down a line drive headed for the gap. In the third Tony Esquith picked a runner off second for the third out. Esquith also threw out a runner attempting to steal in the sixth.

Yorktown is now 15-6, heading into Tuesday's Regional quarterfinal against Annandale at Annandale. Game time is 6:30 PM.
