5th - 6th Rules Clarification

  Coaches Corner - Week 2

A question has come up regarding 6th grade back court pressure....ANSWER-Any type of backcourt pressure is allowed at 5th grade (last 2 minutes of game) and 6th grade throughout the game.  This includes various zone presses and traps, run and jump defense, man to man ect.  The rule however states that once the ball crosses half court, the defense must retreat to a man to man only in the half court set.

See as stated below  from the 2015-16 YGSBL Rules

10.     Back Court Pressure:

a.    6th, 7th & 8th Grades: No rules prohibiting back court pressure throughout the game until a team has attained a (15) fifteen point, or more lead

b.    5th Grade: No defensive player is allowed in the opponent's backcourt until the last two minutes of the game and overtime. This restriction begins once the defense secures the rebound or gains possession (complete control) of the ball.

c.    All Levels: A team with a lead of 15 points or more may not apply any defensive pressure in the opponents back court and must retreat to the opponent's front court once the opponent clearly secures possession of the ball. (At any court where the division line is difficult to determine, leniency will be allowed.

Note:   A technical foul may be assessed against the offending team's head coach for repeated violations of 10a, 10b, or 10c

1.  Please make sure you are familiar with all the league rules, you should have a set of game rules on your bench for each game.  5th Grade Coaches - There is no trapping or double teaming in the half court defense set.  Play man to man defense with helpside rotation as needed.

2Several Referees have commented about Head Coaches NOT following the YGSBL Seat Belt Rule. Head Coaches may only briefly stand to substitute players, call out a play or address their team.  It has been observed that many Head Coaches are standing throughout the majority of the game, this is NOT allowed.  All Assistant Coaches must be seated at all times during game play.

3. Week 1 - Too many games did not have scoresheets filled out with foul counts, running score and FINAL SCORE listed.  We cannot keep track of scores and standings without proper information.  Coaches Responsibility To Have A Qualified Adult Volunteer To Manage The Game Score Book or Game Clock. It is the responsibility of each team to provide a qualified adult volunteer for each game to manage either the game clock or score book at the center table in the YGSBL.  It is the responsibilty of the coaching staff to have an adult volunteer, who understands the game and the rules, at the table prior to game start.  The items to be completed on the score sheet are: Team Names, Player Numbers, Running Score, Individual Player Points, Number of Fouls (Team and Individual), Change of Possession, Time Outs used and FINAL SCORE. This is a very important role in the administration of the league to keep accurate standings.  Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

4.  Coaches should have their own first aid kits with ice packs, athletic tape and other items.  The league facility rental agreements with Waukesha West and South does not include access to training supplies.  Please be prepared to address your teams first aid needs.

  2015-2016 Preview

The YGSBL will continue to field a 64 team setup (16 teams per grade level for 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th grades).  Teams that played in the YGSBL in the 2014-2015 season have the first right to return to the league for the 2015-2016 season.  (example - if you were a 5th grade team in 2014-15 and played in the YGSBL, your team has the spot reserved in the 2015-16 6th grade YGSBL.  Once a team is in the YGSBL, the league organizers do not remove that team from the league unless it is requested upon by the team itself  or unless significant issues arise.) It is rare that an opening occurs.  5th & 6th grade teams play at Waukesha South and 7th & 8th grade teams play at Waukesha West.  Team registration forms and other materials for the 2015-16 season are now posted on the Handouts page.

Game dates will be posted once they are confirmed with the Waukesha School District, typically in September.  Teams play 2 games per date with a compact rotation of play a game - sit out a game - play a game - done.  There are 8 game dates throughout the 16 game season - 7 regular season dates and 1 date for an end of the season league tournament that all teams qualify for.  Waukesha South typically plays on Sundays while Waukesha West uses a combination of Saturday afternoon/evening and Sunday dates.  This is a highly coveted league and rescheduling of games is not allowed.  Please do not book outside tournaments until the YGSBL League schedule is finalized.  Thank you for your interest and we look forward to another great season. ______________________________________________________________________________
