The Beat Goes On
Baton Rouge, LA (AP) -- The beat goes on for the YBBR Mets this offseason. As anticipated, the Mets recently released their official 2004 player roster that includes three key player acquisitions (which by the way seem to be getting bigger and faster all the time). Nick Scelfo, Jack Harrison and David Dyson will be wearing the orange & blue in 2004 after previously playing for the YBBR Giants.
These free agent signings were the result of two Met players electing to pass up their final year of eligibility in YBBR following the 2003 season. While Jake Anderson & Jason King will be missed after their years with the team, there is also great excitement about what the new additions will bring to this Mets ballclub. Joining Dyson, Harrison and Scelfo are eight returning two year starters --Scott Ashford, Thomas Boyer, Ben Llorance, Jack Hymel, Tanner Breaux, Hayden Smith, Brad Nelson and Garrett LaCour.
"Our division," said one league official, when informed of the Mets offseason signings, "just got tougher."
No doubt, the Mets have made some valuable improvements this offseason, improvements that should give teams concern in the YBBR National League. However, don't go buying your Mets World Series tickets just yet. While this is normally a time of optimism, a bit of realism might be in order. Admittedly, on paper the Mets look to have gain some added firepower to an already potent offensive lineup, but will that be enough to offset any potential pitching, defense or team chemistry the Mets may have lost when they failed to resign all of their 2003 roster.
So while the Mets did address some issues and make some improvements, there are other issue that still loom large. When you push optimism and pessimism aside and all the pro's and con's are weighed, what are the chances of the Mets contending this season? That is an ending only time can tell. Make no mistake, the Mets have improved, but contending for a possible 2004 YBBR Championship in a league this competitive? Well, there's always hope for all teams this time of the season.
