2009 X-TREME HUGE SUCCESS ~ READ ALL ABOUT IT HERE

CELEBRATING OUR DECADE

X-TREME RUNNING CAMP 2009 - A HUGE SUCCESS!

Seventy five athletes from Sussex, Morris, Warren, and Essex Counties as well as kids from PA and a team from Virgina spent the week of the 10th Annual X-Treme Youth Running Camp running hard and hearing from some of the greats of the sport.

On Monday, we had 2x Olympian Ann Marie Letko talk about the drive and determiantion it took to get to two Olympic Games! We also had Nationally reknowed Nutiritist Erin Polinski talk about the importance of making sound nutritional choices and hydrating correctlly. The kids either did a tempo 5k or 10k that day followed by some X-treme Relay drills.

Tuesday was awsome as Ramapo College Cross Country and Track Coach Mike Jackson spoke about D3 Running then Morris Hills great Sean Pohereance gave a great speach about what it took to get to his level of Running as well as what it took to get him to Harvard.

The top group of athletes ran a hard 10 miles with SCIL 3200 Champ Mike Galonski pounding 5:45 miles at the end of the run with Sean! Close behind were some of the area's best Runners!

Wednesday's Camp included a clinic by Tom Fleming who is very inspirational. He spoke about what it took to Run a 2:12 Marathon, Win NYC 2X and come in 2nd at Boston 2X. The kids were mezmorized when he spoke about his relationship with Steve Prefontaine and how "back in the day" he was known as Steve (never Pre). "The biggest mistake Steve ever made," said Fleming, "Was drinking while driving." He then emphasized "Don't do it!"

The  kids either did a distace run or a threshold 5k followed by some X-TREME RELAYS.

Thursday was an amzazing day as we heard from Marcus O'Sullivan and Mike Mykytok. O'Sullivan spoke about how his great career processed from going for an initial walk with his dad in the 8th grade and asking him if he thought he could ever make an Olympic team to the work and dedication it took to get him to 4 Olympics as well as over 100 sub 4 minute miles!

Myktok also gave a great talk. The kids were amazed at his PR's- 13:40 and 28:10. "To get the most out of your Running," said Myktok, "You need to concentrate on Running and not do any other sports." He went on to speak about his High School career and the extra work he put in!

Our X-TREME athletes did an hour of fartlek followed by 30 minutes of Run -Around.

On Friday, we concluded camp with the X-TREME 5k. Congrats to our winners, Mike Galonski of Newton in 16:15 and Kathy Cossic of North Penn High School in 19:10. What is significant, is that depite the fact that all our X-TREME Campers worked very hard during the week, all gave outstanding efforts in the race. This bodes really well for your up coming XC seasons!

Our speakers on Friday were Mark Will-Weber who spoke about race strategy and the top 10 things not to do. He was followed by noted sports physical therapist Janice Morra who not only gave injury prevention advise, she provided individual form analysis for each of our athletes.

Our final speaker was local elite Runner and Coach Andy Latinscis. Andy is a Masters Runner, still clocks sub 16 for 5k. We concluded with Andy, as he is living the life we try to preach at camp, i.e that Running is a lifetime sport filled with a wide variety of benefits!

Great job by each of our campers and best of luck with  your up-coming Cross Country seasons.

Call us any time you need a dose of motivation!
