Competition and Participation

As a weekend activity, the club is conscious that it needs to focus on providing a fulfilling and satisfying experience to all members worthy of their time and money. Obviously, the primary avenue of attempting to achieve this will be through the fielding of team(s) to regular season competition games, winning as many as possible - if not all - and getting everyone to play in those winning games. Having said this, winning is never assured, we all have different baseball talents and other circumstances/commitments are more than likely to ensure most of us cannot make every single game. In order to manage this rather delicate balance between providing the thrill of competitive victory and all-round participation, the club has adopted core themes that it will honor. Team(s) fielded in NBL games will be managed by these principles. Please consider these themes carefully before deciding to become a registered member.

  • In its attempt to deliver satisfaction/fulfillment and to avoid unnecessary injuries, the club will be looking for some relevant experience in accepting your application, details of which can be found later in the application form. This experience factor is a moving target depending on the overall standard of the player pool the club has.
  • Team(s) will compete with a view to achieve both victory and all-round participation of member players. To be sure, we are NOT a win-at-all-costs type of competitive club. If we win but can't field all players we need you to take it in stride. The same goes where we field all players and end up losing a winning game as a result (though it shouldn't happen, but you never know - victory is never assured until it's over). Don't be picky or choosy about how you get into the game, get out there and enjoy it.
  • Participate in practice sessions. A bench manager will run the team in practice and games. He will be at these practice sessions to take in all the information he needs about his players. If he doesn't appreciate your talents because you're not there at the practice sessions, don't blame him for it. Dedication and commitment still do count.
  • The opening lineup for all regular season games will consist of the best available (for each game in question) player for each position. Victory is sweet and the team needs to be given its proper chance to beat the opposition. Once on the playing field, show your competitive side - no need to be a nice guy until the game's over.
  • The bench manager runs the game. In making player changes, the bench manager will most likely, among other things, take into consideration the following elements (in no particular order of importance or weight): - Ahead or behind in the game and the size of the margin - Key talents in a specific area (e.g. fast legs, good hitting, better fielding, etc) - Commitment & dedication to the club and team (includes whether you're showing up at practice; don't even complain if you're not) - Past record of game participation opportunity
  • Get to know where you stand among peer members. Baseball talent is pretty obvious stuff. Coming to practice sessions is a very good way to gauge this. Once you overcome this angle, you'll still find a way to have fun. Come with a mindset to enjoy the game and practice sessions - not too serious, not too relaxed.
  • Don't get worked up or upset if the standards of the club are not up to your expectations. Think about the others who don't get to play as often, and the team will hum along fine.
  • Come to our regular waterhole sessions to mix with the gang. Just playing ball alone on weekends is not the way to participate in this ball club.
  • In fielding competition team(s), this club will honor and follow the rules and regulations set forth by the SBSA and any league requirements. Show respect and restraint, even if it's tough to do so.

Now you know how we'll run the club. Next, we want you to know more about our practice sessions and games. Read on!
