League wins OK to play at Harmon Field

By KEITH TAYLOR/Sun Sports Editor

Organizers of the Cal Ripken-Babe Ruth League cleared a major hurdle Monday night when the Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation Board granted the league permission to use Harmon Field.

The board finalized the agreement during a special-called meeting at College Park Gym.

"I'm really tickled to death with how it came out," league organizer Larry Roe said during a phone interview. "I was a little worried about (getting a field), but that's settled."

A parks board committee met with league officials and came up with plans for the field, which primarily has been used as a practice field for the past 28 years and is in need of repair.

According to Parks and Recreation Director Donnie Parsons, the field hasn't been used since 1976. It was among the first used by the Little League program, which used the facility until 1961. The field was used off and on by recreational softball leagues for the next 15 years.

The board agreed to strip the infield and mix the dirt infield with sand and install a 4-foot fence along the first- and third-base lines. A temporary fence will be placed in the outfield 200 feet from home plate.

The parks board also agreed to renovate both dugouts and install a metal bracket behind home plate for a backstop.

The parks department will mow the field on a weekly basis.

During sign-ups the past three weeks, Roe said the league has been well received. Roe said approximately 50 youngsters have signed up for the 8-10 year-old league, enough to field "four to five teams." He added that his primary goal is to field six teams.

Roe said interest in the league has been coming from "a lot of people who do not play or they are new to the area."

The Babe Ruth league, consisting of players ages 13-15 years-old, likely will field one team each in the softball and baseball divisions and will play teams in surrounding counties.

Roe credited the efforts of Darrell Combs for his involvement with the Babe Ruth league.

"He (Combs) has spearheaded that effort and has come up big on that end of the deal," Roe said.

A target date for opening day has been set for May 22.

In other business the board:

* Accepted a $14,972 bid from Toadvine Enterprises, Fisherville, to install a four-row set of manual bleachers at College Park Gym. The Winchester Lions and Winchester Civitan clubs already have contributed a combined total of $12,000 for installation of the bleachers.

* Accepted a $11,680 bid from Roof Services, Winchester, to install a new roof on the College Park Library building.

* Agreed to hire Edward Hampton, Carlie Baker, David Whitehouse and Richard Winburn as seasonal maintenance workers from April 1 to Sept. 30. Harvey Embry was hired as an alternate.

* Agreed to hire Mike Anderson to work late afternoons and evenings during peak hours at the College Park Gym.

Board members Charles Eury, B.J. Wasson, Kenny Book, Dwain Gay and Jeannie Schureman were present. Jerry Rogers, Bob Jackson and Scott Hisle were absent.

April 5th Meeting
Update,
In our meeting last night was discussed on multiple ways to be able to meet our scholarship needs for familys that can not afford the league fee's.

Ralph Cinnamon the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken area commissioner applauded our efforts in getting this league off the ground and our efforts also to give scholarships to needy familys.   He also is working with Tim Ellis our Scheduler to help allign games from other surrounding counties for both our Baseball and Softball divisions.   He is also working with myself on securing Umpires to help fill the voids.

The last signup will be this coming Saturday and next Monday our task will be to assign coach's and players to teams so practice can then begin just as we hope the weather starts to get warm.

April 12th Meeting
A girls softball coach was found and introduced to the board. Steve Rehnborg has accepted this responsibility. Thank You Steve!!!

Signups were grouped but division and then put into a spread sheet for the coach's to work from.

Sponsors have been found for all 4 of our beginning teams at $400 a piece. Those are Muncie Buick, Winchester FOP, Winchester Auto Sales, and ICON Engineering.   Thank you for your support.

Account has been opened at Traditional Bank in Winchester for league use. We requested a dual signature on checks from the Treasurer and President to protect them from later funding questions.

Additional Scholarships were added from area business's.   Traditional Bank, Touch of Class Limo Service, Scott's Auto Repair, Spectrum Photography, Kids 1st Program at Central Elem., Muncie Buick, and the Family Resource Centers from Conkwright/Central/Strode Station/Clark Middle Schools.

Tim Ellis gave report on scheduling and will further this at next weeks meeting.

Coach's were given the OK to start practice once they received their player list.

Ken Howard introduced ideal to do up advertisment for all sponsors to put on outfield fence on a 4X8 sheet of plywood.   He is also adding a sheet for center field for the Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth Symbols on a Sheet. This passed with overwhelming support.   Darrell Combs is getting with a Lumber business to see if they will supply the plywood with a sign being added for them also.   So in total we are looking at possibly 6 signs for the outfield fence.

April 19th
Talked to Steve Fain in Berea and he is proposing to their board tonight about doing home/away games for all divisions. He is also going to ask Richmond to join in for the Babe Ruth division since all three counties need support in that area.

Ralph Cinmemin(Cal Ripken area Comissioner) is stepping getting more involved with getting a hold of Montgomery and North Lexington for games.
