Parents & Players,
I would like to welcome you to another exciting year of baseball in Winchester, KY. Over the last three years we have worked to build an organization that strives to teach, give opportunities, and make it fun for the kids to play baseball. Local businesses and the Winchester Parks Department have played a huge roll in helping WYBL give opportunities to kids in the Clark County community and we continue to need that support.
WYBL is currently expanding the board to handle the increase in growth, until now we have been able to keep this small but now an expanded board is now required. This will mean better player representation and spread out the responsibilities to qualified people. As President I will head the Cal Ripken division and Tony Banks as Vice President will head the Babe Ruth division.
Our numbers have continued to grow over the last 3 years and we are expecting even more growth in 2007 as we are covering all age groups from 4 to 18yrs old now in our league. Our league begins play in mid May, which makes it easier for soccer players to also play baseball. Below are the numbers on how much we have grown.
Year Kids Scholarships Different League Divisions
2004 30 12 7-10
2005 65 25 7/8, 9/10, 11/12 & 13/15
2006 117 44 4/6, 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13/15, & 16/18
One thing that I have seen develop in the last three years is how the Harmon/Community Park area has opened its arms to our league and how our league is starting to bring a family atmosphere back to this area. One of the most amazing stats from our leagues beginning is that 75% of our players would not have been playing baseball at all without our league. These two facts make all the work that we put into the league worth every minute.
The fields are another area to bring to point. Three years ago when we searched for an area to start our league we were directed to Harmon. It was a field of opportunity to say the least with just a backstop to start with we began our quest. We now have an enclosed fence, scorer’s booth, scoreboard, the 1926 Harmon Park dedication plaque, and completed dugouts with roofs. Community Park(Babe Ruth Baseball) the infield was expanded to handle a complete diamond at 90’ and a new score board. This year we will continue our improvements with warm up mounds being built on both fields and a permanent mound possibly on Community Park for the older leagues. WYBL has requested both Wiseman and Massie Parks to use this year to help with our growth.
Last year we moved our 9/10 & 11/12 age groups to play on 70’ bases and a 50’ pitching mound. This added length allows these kids to adjust easier to the 90’ Babe Ruth bases later when they turn 13yrs old, plus adds more excitement to the game.
This year has already been busy, since the Clark County School board due to funding declined any new programs from starting. WYBL has stepped in with assistance to help get the Jr High aged kids teams started. Both teams will use Community Park and operate under the WYBL Babe Ruth Charter and play in the Bluegrass Conference with 10 other Central KY schools.
I would like to thank everyone that has put work into this league from parents, sponsors, and coaches over the last 3 years. On a closing note I will quote a great coach John Critser that passed the torch to me 6 years ago when he moved to Kansas “Keep Them Hitting!!!”
Included are a flyer for upcoming camps and a season registration form for 2007 that you can mail in back into the address on the page. Please contact me ASAP on the camps, these spots will go quickly.
Thank You,
