ROCKIES 12 PADRES 6 Playoffs Up Next!
The Rockies built an early lead then held off a Padres team that plays by the motto "Don't Quit" for a 12 - 6 win that propels them to a playoff position and hopefully another run at the Rochester NABA 28 + Championship. Evan Bickel (7 IP, 11 hits, 4 k's) started and got the win for the Rockies. Dave Schumacher (2 IP, 4 K's) came on in relief and closed out the game for the Rockies who finish 9-8-1 in the amazingly close American Division. The Padres got a run on the board early scoring a run in the top of the first. Dennis Tubolino led off the game with a base knock. Two outs later he scored when Craig Jones laced a 1-2 Bickel pitch into right field for a base hit and rbi. The Rockies tallied 3 times in the bottom of the inning. Mickey Harris (2-4) singled with one out, scoring on Anthony Leonardo's 2 out base hit. Leonardo scored on Bickel's (2-4) base hit, and Bickel came in on Chuck Healey Jr's (3-5) base hit to give the Rockies a 3-1 lead after one. After a scorless second inning and top of the third, the Rockies broke this one open in the bottom of the third. 12 batters to the plate, scoring six runs in the process on seven consecutive hits to take a 9-1 lead. The Rockies made it 11-1 in the fifth inning. The Padres scored once in the sixth after Bo Mulholland walked with one out, then scored as Karp, Aagersen, and Yazback stroked back to back to back hits. The Padres had a big seventh inning to close to 11 - 6. The highlight being a monster 3 run homer by Karp that cleared the parking lot behind the left field fence. The Rockies got one back in the bottom of the inning to close out the scoring at 12-6. Schumacher came on to pitch the eighth and despite allowing 3 baserunners got help from his teammates and allowed no runs. In the ninth, after hiting former Rockie Captain Bo Mulholland with an inside fast ball despite having him down 0-2 in the count, he kept Karp in the park with a base hit then struck out the next three Padres swinging to close out the win. The Rockies finish 9-8-1 and in 2nd place in the American Division, while the Padres (who won vs. the Dodgers later 8-3) finish 10-7-1 to take first place in the division.
