ROCKIES Take Wild 5-4 Win Over DEVILS in Extra Innings!
The Rockies and Devils hooked up for a mid week game at the U of R with both teams in the thick of a tight race for the playoffs in the 28+ American Division The Devils came in sporting a 5-5 record including a 12 -10 win over the 4-5 Rockies in their first meeting this season. A win would go a long way to ensuring the Devils would finish ahead of the Rockies for the season and possibly give them a "leg-up" on a playoff berth.
Rick Dwyer led off the game with a ringing double to the left center field gap and the 350 sign. He swiped third and scored with one out when the throw got past the Rockies third baseman and into left field giving the Devils an early 1-0 lead before Rockies starter Dave Schumacher (5 IP, 5 K's 4 hits) could even get settled in. Dwyer(7 IP, 4 runs) took the hill for the Devils and the Rockies got to him early. Doug Costello (1-3, double) led off wit a "home book double" that went off the tip of the Devils right fielder's glove. Mickey Harris (1-3, double) followed with another double and the score was tied at 1. John Sexton (1-3) scratched out a single, but Harris was forced to hold at second on the play. Evan Bickel then laid down a great sac bunt that Dwyer attempted to get Harris at third on and did when he came off the bag after stepping on third baseman Jay Taranto's leg. After a fly ball for the second out of the innning, Mark Hebert (1-2) took a Dwyer pitch the opposite way down the left field line and scored Sexton on the play. Tony Leonardo(1-3, triple) then crushed a fastball to deep center field for a triple scoring both Bickel and Hebert and the Rockies led 4-1 after 1. The game then became a pitcher's duel for the next several innings. Dwyer pitched five scoreless innings facing only 16 Rockies (1 over the limit) in the process. Tony Leonardo (4 IP, 3 K's, 1 hit) would surrender an unearned run in the sixth when Dwyer reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a dropped third stike and came home on an infield out. The Devils rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh scoring both runs with two outs. With one out Gil Bussey reached on an error, he was forced at second on Jay Hamilton's ground ball to short and with two outs the Rockies looked like they were ready to wrap this one up. An overthrow to first by the catcher, and an error at third on Gino Siembor's ground ball allowed Hamilton to score. Siembor moved to second on the play and third on a wild pitch. Jeff Mountain then worked the count to ball four and a passed ball on that pitch allowed Siembor to score and the game was tied. Greg "Barney" Barnhardt threw gas in the seventh and eighth facing only 7 Rockies, while Leonardo got the Devils in order in the eighth and ninth. In the bottom of the ninth the Rockies would win the game. Jay Mann walked with one out, Chuck Healey Jr. then came up with a soft line drive base hit to right center. Bill Schnupp then worked the count to 3-2 and with both Rockies moving on the play watched ball four sail by outside. The Devils catcher came up throwing and the ball went into left field on the play allowing Craig Brown (pitch running) to scamper home with the winning run. Leonardo took the win for the Rockies who at 5-5 are tied for second with the Lugnuts in the division(although the 'nuts hold the tie breaker with an earlier win) The Devils drop to 5-6 but are far from out of the hunt. Best of Luck to the Devils and thanks for a great game.
