The Rochester Rockies head into the 2012 season with high hopes and aspirations for a return to the top of the Rochester NABA 28+ League. The team missed the playoffs for the first time ever in 2011 after finishing first in their division in 2010 and 1 point out of the best overal record. A lack of consistency in the game to game roster, bad luck and an ever improving league led to a frustrating and uncharacteristicly bad season for the team. The season ending with a 12-11 loss in the final of the "Best of the Rest" playoffs to the newly formed Angels.
2012 will see the Rockies undergoing some changes. Stalwarts Jason Mann, Mickey Harris, Bill Schnupp, Chuck Healey Jr., Evan Bickel, Jason DeJohn, Ari Freedman and Jason Simmons return along with Doug Costello and John "Farve" Sexton who will come out of retirement for the sixth or seventh time on a part time basis.
The exciting news for 2012 is that seven members of the 2011 RMSBL Tigers a very good team in that league will join the Rockies on a full time basis and possibly a couple more on a part time basis. New Additions Brian Colwell (LHP), Nick Dobson (Catcher/SS), Tyler Reid (OF/INF), Freddie Flo (Catcher/INF), Angelo Pedulla (INF), and Pat Tulloch (OF) are all veteran players that will make an impact on the team's return to prominence in the league. Other former Tigers Paul Twydell (LHP/OF), Paul Sheldon (RHP/INF),John Knechteges (1B), and Steve Pete (1B) all may contribute this year but their playing availability is not known at this time. Ed Cznarecki (RHP/INF) will make the journey from the dark side (umpire) back to the diamond as a player.
Manager Chuck Healey Sr. returns to coach and has 3 championships (1 RMSBL, 2 NABA), and 6 division titles on his resume. With depth at pitching, the skill positions, an outfield that should cover well and some new "pop" in the batting order, hopes are high for a very competitive team that should contend if the team comes together well.
