That also means that we are getting closer to our own Alumni Breakfast at the Western Region in San Bernardino, CA. Invites will be coming via email (if we have your email address) or by US Mail and we look forward to seeing you bright and early at the Elks Club on August 15, 2009. It is an election year so we hope to see you all there.
Forging ahead with our mantra of "For Umpires, By Umpires" in 2009 we presented funds to each Western Regional host so that the additional funds could be used exclusively for the umpires invited to that tournament. Whether it was an extra shirt, extra hats, a jacket or a dinner, we felt it appropriate to show our support for each Western Regional tournament. Also in 2009 we were again able to provide scholarships for young umpires who desired to attend the Junior Umpire School. These 2009 projects are added to the improvements, additions and successes that the Association has been involved in since its inception. We remain a viable, strong and financial sound organization. I am currently completing my fourth year as your President and I have been very honored to work with some fine individuals who have contributed greatly to the success of the Association. There is more to accomplish, more to do and more successes in the horizon.
While we have seen our membership grow it was our hope that opening up membership to any umpire who had worked a Western Region in either baseball or softball would have garnered more members. We ask you to assist us in getting the word out telling people about our Association.
I look forward to seeing you all at the breakfast as well as the tournament.
Sincerely-
Mark Bernstein-President WRLLUAA

The Western Region Little League Umpire Alumni Association (WRLLUAA) Board of Directors met recently and voted to change the bylaws. It is now possible for any umpire who umpired any Western Region Tournament, baseball or softball, to become a member of the association. Mark Bernstein, president of the association has addressed this in a letter below. If you would like to become a member, please click here.
Alumni Association Set to Grow
As we near another great Little League season the Western Region Little League Umpire Alumni Association (WRLLUAA) has some exciting news.
I would first like to thank each and every one of you who have made donations or support the Alumni Association. With your assistance we will continue to improve the umpiring experience for all Western Region Volunteer Umpires.
At the most recent annual meeting the WRLLUAA voted to expand it's membership and open it's doors to ANY volunteer Little League Umpire who has umpired a Regional tournament at any level of baseball and softball. While this was always the ultimate goal, the membership as well as the elected Board of Directors for the Alumni Association now believe, after two years in existence, that the time is right to honor and recognize each volunteer Regional Little League umpire.
This of course does not just happen. We are asking for your assistance to help us identify and get the word out to all those in your Districts and Sections who might qualify for this inclusion. While there are some records, due to the volume of umpires and the different sites of different tournaments we are asking you to assist in getting the word out.
Applications for membership to the Alumni Association can be found on the Western Region Website as can a more formal announcement of this expansion. We thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide in identifying those that qualify.
Thank you-
Mark Bernstein

UMPIRE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
With the approval of both Little League and the Western Regional Headquarters we are pleased to announce the formation of the Western Region Little League Umpire Alumni Association (WRLLUAA).
This Association was created by umpires solely for umpires at the Western Regional facility in San Bernardino, CA. All monies donated and collected will be used exclusively for the improvement of the training facility for umpires at the Western Region as well as other items determined to better the experience for all umpires who attend training or are honored to be selected to umpire at the Western Region Little League Baseball Tournament in San Bernardino, California.
All of the funds collected will be separated from all other funds within the Western Region and will be spent pursuant to determinations made by the Board of Directors established by the membership of the WRLLUAA. All donations are tax deductible. Membership is open to all those who have had the honor of umpiring at any Regional Baseball or Softball Tournament in the Western Region. Donations are also welcome and appreciated. Initial response has been overwhelming. The first membership meeting took place on August 13, 2005 in San Bernardino, California. At that meeting, members were elected to the Board of Directors. To view the Board Members, click on the "Board" link on the left. Discussions were heard regarding future purchases, projects, and plans for the association. If you would like a form to become a member or make a donation, click here, download and follow the instructions on the form.

The young volunteer umpire in Little League is the future of the umpire program. He or she must be well prepared to carry the torch into the future. It is through knowledge and training that the young volunteer umpire will be best prepared for a long and successful Volunteer Little League career.
To best promote these ideals, the WRLLUAA has set aside ten (10) full scholarships to the Junior Umpire Training School to be held at the Western Region Headquarters (open to individuals between 13-17 years of age) scheduled for June 20-26, 2009.
The scholarship application must be completed and returned to the address provided on the form by May 15, 2009. A committee established by the Board of Directors of the WRLLUAA will determine the scholarship recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified if they qualified by June 1, 2009, and will have tuition for the school paid directly to the Western Region or reimbursed if the student has already made payment. Scholarships will go only to individual umpires and not to local leagues or districts.

Fourteen new metal lockers have been installed in the Umpire Locker Room at the Western Region Headquarters in San Bernardino. Five volunteers were instrumental in assembling and installing the lockers. Those individuals were: Art Valdez, Debbie Romero, Tony Estrada, and Harrison and Lucy Cole. These lockers are a great addition to the facility, and were paid for by the Alumni Association Members.

2009 Umpire Registry is now open
Little League Baseball’s Umpire Registry offers Little League umpires a smart way to stay on top of their game. By joining the Umpire Registry, umpires immediately become part of a unique information network charged with enhancing umpire services for Little League players everywhere. “We started the Umpire Registry to provide umpires an easy and effective communication channel to stay updated about their game. The response has been tremendous,” Andy Konyar, umpire consultant at Little League Baseball International, said. “Rule books are literally sent right to members’ doorsteps and through our regular newsletter, umpires can gather industry news and information.”
The Umpire Registry provides an opportunity for umpires to stay updated on rules and regulations, exchange ideas, and offer suggestions that will continually improve them. Umpires can access the latest information on clinics, seminars, rule interpretations, regulations updates and more. According to Mr. Konyar, tools like the Fair Ball newsletter are providing umpires a network with which they can correspond and receive peer feedback on situations happening out in the field. “Umpires send in real situations right from the field and ask for feedback, Mr. Konyar said.” The situations and responses also become valuable tools for improving the profession and educating volunteer umpires.”
The Umpire Registry also maintains an updated file of members, providing an excellent referral resource to league officers and tournament directors. Umpires also receive: Copies of all Little League Baseball Rule Books A copy of The Umpire in Little League A copy of Little League Baseball’s The Right Call An official Little League Baseball Registry Identification Card, Certificate and Patch Subscription to The Umpire Registry Newsletter, Fair Ball, and a copy of ERules. A listing in the Little League Baseball Registry of Umpires can register online for a one-year membership for just $25.00.
