Hawks looking to maintain tenacity against Saints
DESPITE the fact last weekend’s clash against Corowa Rutherglen resulted in the Wangaratta Rovers posting their eighth straight loss, morale is rising at the WJ Findlay Oval.

For three quarters at the John Foord Oval last Saturday the Hawks were irrepressible, employing a level of tenacity and desperation at the contest the Roos simply couldn’t match, enabling them to build a 23-point lead by the final change without the benefit of a recognised forward.

While they let the match slip in the final term, when a Dave Clark inspired revival saw the Roos get home by eight points, coach Matt Allen said the Hawks now had a template to work with over the remainder of the season.

"That was the best game we’ve played all year," he said.

"There was a mixed feeling in the rooms afterwards, because everyone was a bit disappointed at having lost the match.

"But there was also a positive feeling, because we played the way we’ve been wanting to play all year."

The Hawks were hampered by injuries in the final term of the match, with Anthony Tucci and Tas Clingan sidelined, and both players are set to miss tomorrow’s match against Myrtleford, while Karl Norman, who was a late withdrawal against the Roos, could be rested.

While the injuries are bad news, Allen said fringe player Ben Britten was a likely inclusion into the side after a stunning 13-goal haul for the reserves last weekend, with the Hawks looking to up the ante against Myrtleford.

"Ben Britten is pushing for selection, very much so," he said.

"It’s not often someone kicks 13 goals in any form of football."We’re taking Myrtleford very seriously - we haven’t won many games either.

"The aim is to go out and play the way we want to play, keep the momentum that we built up last week going, and keep up that level of pressure."
