History awaits Allen...Rovers coach has Raiders on the radar in his 400th game
WANGARATTA Rovers champion Matt Allen will line up for his 400th senior Ovens and Murray Football League match in tomorrow’s opening round clash against the Wodonga Raiders at WJ Findlay Oval, but his focus will be on making a winning start in his first season as coach.

After beginning his playing career with the Hawks thirds in 1984, before graduating to the senior side the following year, 2009 presents a new challenge for Allen, meaning there will be little time to soak in the kudos normally associated with such a rare milestone.

"My focus is definitely elsewhere - I’m not thinking about it," Allen said.

"I have too much else too think about at the moment, and my first priority is looking after the side.

"I guess in years to come it will be something I will look back at and reflect on, but now isn’t the time."

Allen was pleased with the Hawks’ preseason campaign, with the side winning all three of its practice matches against Numurkah, Euroa and Shepparton United, but said there was still plenty of ground to cover as the new look squad comes together.

"As far as scoreboard results went it was a successful preseason, so I was happy with that," he said.

"But results aren’t your main concern during the preseason - it’s really about developing players and getting the team to function."We were able to blood a good number of players, and they gelled well, so that is the main thing.

"We are really putting a new team together, and there is still work to do, but it’s coming along well at the moment."

After a string of departures in the off-season, and several players being hampered by injuries, Allen said he was looking at bringing around eight players into the side for tomorrow’s match, with defender Brian Tavare one of those pushing for selection after a strong preseason.
