Caruso latest to reach for star prize
WANGARATTA Rovers youngster Sam Caruso is the final nomination for the SS & A Ovens and Murray league Rising Star Award which will be revealed on Morris Medal night.

Caruso, 17, was rewarded for a strong second half of the season and he joins Mitch Nelson, Nathan Kerlin, Andrew Robinson and Todd Bryant as players eligible to win.

The son of Wangaratta Rovers champion, Mick, receives the nomination despite playing three games for TAC side Murray Bushrangers earlier in the year.

The lightly built Caruso was the Hawks’ best in their final-round loss to Corowa-Rutherglen with close to 40 possessions.

Caruso said he was hopeful of playing the bulk of next season with the Bushies after having a taste of it during the under-18 National Championships.

Since making his debut in round 4 against Myrtleford, Caruso has managed 10 senior games including the final six of the season.

Caruso — along with Zac O’Brien, Matt Brown, Matt Flynn, Trent Lappin and Connor Tait — have all graduated from the Hawks’ thirds team to play seniors this year.

Last season the award was taken out by Wodonga’s Jack Ziebell.

Previously the Rising Star has been won by Matt Dwyer (Wangaratta Rovers), Daine Porter (Wangaratta), Mark Tyrell (Yarrawonga) and Craig Lieschke (Wodonga).

Players who have played no fewer than five matches for their O and M under-18 team last year and at least one senior match this season are eligible.
