Welcome to the Home of the Wrecking Crew: 2005 Season

Wrecking Crew gets SFA Approval
On April 27,2004 Hector Muniz was given approval to start the 14th team in the SfA.

Wes Zimmerman Commits To wrecking Crew!!!!!
Wes Zimmerman has given a verbal commitment to play with the Wrecking Crew, the new expansion team joining the Sixman Football Association!

Wrecking Crew Goes To Work!
Pat Neff Middle School-At this time of year, most teams in the SFA are letting wounds heal and handle other business other then football. The gridiron is the last thing on mosts minds. Not for head coach Hector Muniz and the expansion Wrecking Crew Football Team.
"The only way we as a football team are going to get better is practice"That said, by Muniz, to a group of players that spent a warm Sunday afternoon practicing for the first time!"I'll tell you guys right now that there is no other way."
More of a evaluation then practice, the Wrecking Crew seem to be a group of hard nose players who will come to play on Sundays come spring time.
"Thank the good Lord that we have seven months till our first game. Most of the guys were a bit out of shape which accounted for alot" said Muniz.
With most players getting to know each other for the first time, mistakes were tolerated; for now.
"We our trying to put in some players in some positions that are a little new to some of them.Trying to figure out who will help us at what spots.I can tell you right now, we our raw"
Offensively a lot of meshing is needed to be competitive in the SFA in '05.QB Wes Zimmerman needs to get back into form offensively after spending last year at defensive back with the mighty MeanMachine.
Zimmerman said that he was rusty, but would get better as time went on.He will be the key to a offense that boast experience, but little else at this point!
"Right now all we can go with is that we have guys here that want to play football. The offense will come along as time goes on.We have some good, talented players that will be able to help build this team, but its way to early to start saying who will do what for this football team at this time.I like the way we got after it on defense" Muniz said.
That being said, the defense will have to be stout, if the Wrecking Crew is to contend in their first year.
Muniz says that defensive back help is needed, but feels his defense is in good shape."We did'nt get to do some of the new stuff that i wanted to, due to some coaching problems, but i liked the way they got after it.Its still early."
Early as in seven months early. As in a long way away."I'm a realist. I would like to look at what we have and say that we our going to be a contender, but that would be unrealistic at this time.Lets just take it step by step and let things happen as they may. But I will say this, practice makes perfect"
         Indeed. Seven months worth!!!!!!!!!!

WRECKING CREW WON'T LET RAIN STOP PRACTICE.
Powell Elementary School- Despite t-storms looming around the city, the expansion Wrecking Crew had practice for the first time in two weeks!Needless to say, more practice is needed!
The Wrecking crew spent most of the practice focusing on offense.Hector Muniz, head coach of the team, says that the offense needs alot of work, but will come along."Its really all about putting players in the right position to make plays still trying to figure out who will be doing what for still tell you what, I like the core of players that seems to be developing. And thats very important in the type of offense we will be running."
Wes Zimmerman,QB, says that when he gets the rust out and get his game going, the Wrecking Crew will be a tough squad!"If these guys can play to the level that i think they can, then we may have some success next season.I can already see these receivers can catch the ball, I just need to get it there!"
Muniz agrees."Wes just needs to get the technique down. Keep the ball up and ready to let it go. That will take time. We have go players that will go get the ball,Wes just needs o get it there."
With practicing three Sundays a month, the Wrecking Crew has plenty of time to get the offense working like a smooth machine.
"Thats true, we do have awhile to get ready, but in my experience in the SFA,the season sneaks up on you. Before you know it, its February and game 1 is here. And with most teams getting better,we must be ready. If you ask me,with having to put in a new offense with players that are not experience in playing in it,I would say that the more time the better."
The Wrecking Crew will be a new team in the soon to be fabled Sixman Football Association. Will they be a good team? " Well, will have to wait and see, but we will be ready. Ever Sunday we will give any squad everything we have and let the cards fall were they may."

'CREW HAS UNEVENTFULL PRACTICE!!!!!!
Patt Neff Middle School-On a nice and unusually cool San Antonio summer afternoon, the SFA expansion team Wrecking Crew went to work as they usually do on Sunday afternoon problem was that most of the 18 players that showed up,seemed to not be in the football mind frame!
Coach Hector Muniz was seen on the field trying to get his squad in gear!"The tough thing right now is getting my players to understand that when it comes to this team, its the 'team first' attitude.Thats what it takes in this day and age of Sixman Football. You have some teams out there that are like that(dedicated) and if you are not ready to face that type of team, you will get run over."
"It seems like today was a big cluster****,offensively. We had guys that didn't seem to no were to go,who to block or how to catch. The one thing these guys on the offensive side of the ball need to understand is that they need to come to play everytime they represent this team. Weather it be practice, warm ups or gametime."
The 'Crew looked exactly like what they are,an expansion team in it's first year. The offense, which showed last practice that it may be getting on track, looked as if they where learning plays for the first time.QB Wes Zimmerman who at times made nice moves to get out of trouble and complete some passes, was flustered and seemed confused. When Zimmerman did have time, his passes where low.
"Wes is coming along. You Know,I rely on him alot. There are two guys on that side of the ball that i rely on.Wes and John Garcia. Those to guys need to understand that as team captains, they are the leaders on this team especially on the offensive side of the ball. And if things(offensively) are not going well, they need to get it going!Hopefully that will come with time. Now we had a few others who just need to get it together.Be ready and no there assignments"
Defensively, things seem to be on the upside.Until, the end of practice. On the last play of practice the offense sent the center straight up the seam,Zimmerman fired a hail mary pass, which was caught over two defenders.Muniz was furious!Along with running the defense gave them a little heated conversation."Things like that just cannot happen if we are to win any games this year."
"For the exception of our first practice, this had to be the worse we have had.But we will fix it,you can count on that."
The Wrecking Crew football team is coming into form as a group, but are in need of alot of work to compete in the SFA.With hard work, discipline and dedication, this team could come along, but not they way they looked yesterday!!!

Wrecking Crew Looking For Defense!
Tom Slick Park-When off-season workouts began this summer, many were under the perception that Wrecking Crew football would be based on a solid defense and a offense that was in the works for the 2005 season.
"Well,it's time to get that idea out of our heads, because our defense at this time needs much work. From tackling to pass coverrage to defending the run;all these areas need work." said head coach Hector Muniz."After the way we played the other day,it showed alot about our ball club."
In a exhibition contest 10 days ago,the mighty Red Raiders put it to the 'Crew,in thier first contest in team history,41-14!It was evident that the defense was lacking aggressiveness that is need to play on that side of the ball.
"I think on that side of the ball you need to have a leader that is going to set an example of how the defense will carry itself.Someone who is going to put that facemask in the numbers and plant the opposing player in the ground and tell him about it afterwards!Thats what we our missing right now, that type of players, that type of attitude"
"Right now,I would say that we have 3-4 players,on defense, that I have that I can count on to be just at practice! There are a few that need to step it up or FIND another team.I need players now, not when they'er ready to come out! This is not the time to be missing practice with so much coming up,but we will go with what we have;and if that means guys going both ways, mark my words, thats what we will do"
A critical time is coming up for this team.November is here.Leaves turn brown, weather changing to a cooler climate and the holidays are coming. For Hector Muniz and his team that means the SFA season is almost here. Can you guess what he is asking Santa for?

Stay tuned..................

Crew Has Tough Time Against Pack
On a wet Sunday afternoon, the Wrecking Crew was beaten soundly by a improved Wolfpack team. With the fields in bad condition, the Crew's injury woes showed defensivly as two starters were kept out of the scrimmage.
From the start, the 'Pack were in control scoring on three of the first ten plays from scrimmage, mostly utilizing thier speed on the ground. The Wolfpack mixed in a nice play action pass that went for good yardage as well.
Offensivly, the Crew started out moving the ball on the ground well, scoring twice in their first ten plays. But then injuries to key players forced the Crew to place players in spots they have not played.
Being optimistic was head coach Hector Muniz. "We are starting to play a little better as a team believe it or not. We had a few players playing back up spots for the first time, filling in for other players that were hurt or needed a blow. I thought we did a good job of covering each others back through out the scimmage. Especially our FB Mondo Cruz. With Leonard Walker out with a injury, Mondo has done a great job of filling in. He Ran the ball tough and kept us moving for the most part."
"We have another scimmage next weekend to try to get better; it's going to take alittle time, but we'll get there. I have no doubt."

Wrecking Crew Plays Tough In Scrimmage
South San Antonio-On Sunday morning the Wrecking Crew football team went to work versus the Wolverines in a SFA preview of what should be a hard hitting regular season meeting in March.
"I really like the fact that the Wolverines knocked the heck out of us most of the scrimmage. Honestly, that is what we needed to get out of this 'thanksgiving funk' were in." head coach Hector Muniz said after the scrimmage.
The Crew ran the ball most of the time with fullback Mondo Cruz and wingback Leonard "L" Walker. Cruz did most of the damage with tough running and solid blocking from Dennis Phillips and Derek Canter.
"Dennis surprised me today; he did a good job of blocking for the most part, and Derek is starting to show more and more every week. I have to say that Mondo is making it really hard for me not to play him at fullback permanently."
Cruz scored the only score of the contest on a solid run to the left that saw him break two tackles on the run." He's doing what we want, run tough and don't lose the ball" Muniz said.
The defense played better then in recent showing as well, not letting the Wolverines inside the twenty yard line once. "We have finally had the chance to play our two best players on defense and it showed" Muniz said. "We did a good job of holding thier running game in check, which for us is a good thing."
"The teams improving, but we have a long way to go. We need to get some consistency going as well."

Crew Beaten By Three-Time Champs

Wrecking Crew Football-Team!
Brooks Field-In a late morning kickoff, the Wrecking Crew football team out gunned the Rhinos 32 to 30. It was a big win for the Crew, who stepped a little closer to a playoff spot. Mostly, it was a team effort, that saw a few players play both ways.
"I was very impressed with the way the team came out today. I thought we were all out of sink. We couldn't get in a grove in warm ups." said Hector Muniz, head coach.
With two,big kick offs taken 'TO THE HOUSE' and a hard pass rush on the Rhinos QB, "L" Leonard Walker led the way kicking the Crew 'on' when his team needed him.
And when Walker needed a little help, Partner in crime Rick Encina was happy to help.
On a simple dump pass to Walker from QB Mike Rincon, Walker ran for a small gain and fumbled the football in the process but in one, swift motion Encina was there to recover and run it in for a touchdown.
"That was a heck of a play by Rick. But the play of the game by far was Big Leroy" Muniz said.
On a kickoff to the Rhinos, Leroy Urrabazo came down and put a low tackle that sent the ball carrier to flip in the air and fumble. Urrabazo's quick thinking also saw him recover the football that led to a crew score.
"Leroy's pop was the game changer in my mind. That hit sent our confidence soaring as well as our play" Muniz said.
The offense saw great catches from Gregg 'Biggins' Trevino and nice catches and a touchdown from Derek Cantu.
"We played solid today as team. Team ball was what got us this win today and I think the players are starting to understand that. Hopefully, we are stating to come together at the right time. But you know what, The fun is over. That team next week is going to present us with a challenge. One that I know we will step up and lay it on the line and see how it turns out. It should be another good game" Muniz said.
Muniz is referring to the strong Ruff rider team that the Crew face next weekend.
The stretch run is here and the Wrecking Crew seem to be rolling a bit winning Three of their last four games.
Once again marked as the underdog the Crew will be tested early and often.
"If you want to be the best in this league, you need to able to win games like this one. Hands down, end of story. Will find out Sunday" Muniz said.

Sucess Found In Playoff Lose
Brooks Park-Before the SFA season kicked off in 2005, many had written off the Wrecking Crew football team. Some said not enough talent to compete. Not a good coach to lead. Flat out last place in the 2005 SFA season.
"We were the underdogs in every game we played in. We had to prove ourselves week end week out. I think thats what turned this group of guys into a good football team." Head coach Hector Muniz said."We had 12 players that dedicated there time and efforts to make us a good team. Its going to be fun next year with this group of players"
The Wrecking Crew football team finished there first season with a 4 and 7 record and a trip to the playoffs. And in the playoffs they entered with a bang.
After the Raiders had taken a 18 point lead in the third quarter the 'Crew staged one of the greatest come backs in SFA playoff history.
"That was the greatest game I will ever be part of. The way we stepped up on defense with stops and a big turn over was great, but that final drive. Thats the one I will always remember." Muniz said.
After a interception by Rick Encina at the 'Crews 3 yard line and one minute forty-nine seconds to go in the game, the Wrecking Crew football team showed what heart they had.
Going to a hurry up offense quarterback Mike Rincon started picking apart the Raiders defense with quick passes and open field running. wide out Derek Cantu had great catches, not only to keep the drive alive, but also the awareness to get out of bounds to stop the clock.
With one second left and the ball on the Raiders 11 yard line, Rincon dropped back to pass. Eluded one rusher. After looking to fined a wide out open with no luck, Rincon took the game in his hands and began to run for the left side of the end zone diving in for the touchdown and the Wrecking Crews greatest victory in its short history.
"That would be Mikes last game. And the way he went about leading his team down the field and scoring was what its all about. What we as a team are all about. But let me say another thing, before that drive, this team put it together on defense as well and we had quite a few players going both ways. When that final drive came around,we were tired, but every player to a man knew what we had to do. And they did it."Muniz said.
The following week the Crew lost to the Rage who a few feel may win the SFA Epler Cup.Without Rincon and Cantu the Crew where out maned.
"It was a tough loss, but I was proud of the players who played their guts out, thats all we can ask for." Muniz said.
Now the Wrecking Crew will take a long awaited rest. Players can now go and heal up. Take into account of this past season and whats ahead for next season. One thing is for sure, when the SFA 2006 seasons starts, teams will know who to get ready for.

Wrecking Crew Football Has Arrived
Brooks Park-Coming into the season, many 6-man football observers pined the Wrecking Crew football team a "easy" win. At high noon Sunday, the "Crew",as many are calling them, made a statement of their own. Trailing by 12 points early in the second quarter, the Crew went to work. Defensively, holding the Outlaws to 6 points the remaining 3 quarters; offensively, the Crew put up 12 quick points to tie the game with a chance to take the win in the fourth.
With time running down in the final period, the Crew were un-able to capitalize, with the Outlaws showing why they are the Northern Conference Defending Champs, shutting down the Crew. Final 18-12 Outlaws.
"We played tough and showed allot of character coming back down 12, but we still lost and in the end, thats all everyone will remember." said Hector Muniz. "We can't be satisfied with this game. To much of the season to be played."
The Hurricanes come calling next, coming off a 1 point win over the Maddogs." If I know Eric and Sarge and Ralph like I do, I know they will do all it takes to win next week. So we must be ready."

Welcome to 6-Man Football.

Defense Leads Crew To First Win
Brooks Park-In a early morning game, the Wrecking Crew rolled over the Hurricanes,30 to 6. Not only was it their first win of the year, but also in team history.
The defense lead the way holding the Canes scoreless until late in the fourth quarter. Alex Salias lead the defensive charge, holding the Canes top wide receiver in check at the same time picking a pass off and taking it the other way for a touchdown. A constant pass rush was kept on the quarterback the whole game with hit after hit.
Offensively, the crew moved the ball up and down he field with quarterback Mike Rincon picking the Canes secondary apart. Rincon started the scoring with a toss to Leonard 'L' Walker. In the second quarter Rincon hit Alex Salias for a touchdown on a deep post to take a halftime lead of 12 to 0. The second half was no different, as Rincon threw two more TD's to Derek Cantu and Mike Doneghy respectively.
The Crew have a bye week coming up, maybe at the wrong time. Can they keep up with the big boys? The Hit Squad are up next, coming off a impressive win against the Rage and the Rhinos next week.
"We will find out in two weeks what kind of team we have. It will be a good little test for us going in to conference play" said Hector Muniz.
"I am happy we won, but its one game. We need to prepare for a good team coming up. A team that will humiliate a squad in a heartbeat. Lot of speed to. Its should be a tough game.
So, after two games confidence is high with the Wrecking Crew football team. Will they keep the intensity? Will they fold?
"Don't be satisfied, ever" Muniz said.
stay tuned.......

Wrecking Crew Falls To Hit Squad
'L'2 THE HOUSE-HIT SQD2-20-05
Leonard 'L' Walker makes a few moves before taking it in for a TD.
Brooks Park-At high noon Sunday, the Wrecking Crew 6-Man football team played the Hit Squad in a hard hitting, big play game; till halftime came around;
In the second half the Hit Squad took total control of the game, holding the 'Crew scoreless with heavy pressure on defense and quick, big play strikes on offense. Final score, 38-13.
"You could say we never came out of the locker room at halftime, if we had any." Head coach Hector Muniz said."Not to make any excuses, because the Hit Squad came out today and played a hell of a game, but we had a horrible of week of practice. And I do not believe we can go out and play with the better teams if we are not prepared."
In a game with few bright spots for the 'Crew, Leonard 'L' Walker provided a few with two spectacular touchdown runs, one on a kick return and another on a tailback screen.
With the loss the Wrecking Crew's record is 1-2 going into conference play. "I can't say that I am happy with the first three games, because we lost two out of three; but i think the we are better then a lot of people thought we would be. Saying that, we need to get better thru practice and the next eight games and hopefully we will have a chance to make a run at the end."
The Red Raiders are up next and they are playing well. Will the landslide continue for the 'Crew or will the first year SFA team rise to the occasion and make some noise in conference play?
" I think that if we get our heads together, work hard and play solid 6-Man team ball we will be ok, but i can tell you by experience that if we don't, it can go down hill quickly." Muniz said.

Wrecking Crew Fall In Mud Bowl '05
Brooks Park-In what is being billed "Mud bowl '05" the Wrecking Crew 6-man football team fell to to the Red Raiders 21 to 6.
With rain falling non-stop, the 'Crew could not hold on to the football from the opening kick-off. What looked to be a big kick return by 'L' Leonard Walker turned into a fumble and recovery by the Raiders. In turn the Raiders took it in for the score and quick seven point lead.
"The conditions played a major part in how we played, but i will not make excuses for our team performance." said Hector Muniz head coach.
Muniz was referring to the numerous droped passes and turnovers on offense and the quick, early points the defense gave up."I can understand the weather was bad,it was wet and slick and muddy and the Raiders are a hard hitting team, but that is what makes the different between a good team and a great one. Making the plays when they count; and so far we have yet to do that."Muniz said.
Again the defense gave up early points but buckled down holding the Raiders to 14 points for the game."Once the defense settle down and made some adjustments we played well.I thought Greg "Biggins"Trevino had a great game taking care of the middle on defense. That was his kind of game.In the mud, against a running game and big hits. And once we put him in at nose guard they didn't score again"
"Now I am not one to give game MVP to a losing cause, but he would have received it if we could have pulled this one out" Muniz said.
With the 'Crew sitting at 1 and 3 the Rage our up next.
"Now there is a offensive powerhouse. We will have to be at the top of our game for this one. It should be fun" Muniz said.
Wrecking Crew football is experiencing the adversity that comes along with a long season. With the Rage coming in next, it should only get harder."I told each player before the season started this was going to be the hardest season they will ever play. Period. End of story. And I expect most will come thru." Muniz said.
Will see.......

'Crew Loses Heartbreaker
rage '05
'L' Loenard Walker is taken down.
Brooks Park-On a warm afternoon this past Sunday a showdown between the powerful Rage and the hard hitting 'Crew was played. In a high scoring contest that saw ten touchdowns scored between the two teams, it was the Rage taking the victory 32 to 30.
" It's fustrating losing these close games." said Mike Rincon,Quarterback."We are better then some of these teams we have played,just......"
Once again the Wrecking Crew played tough. Putting points on the board at will, the offense played it's best game of the year lead by Rincon. Rincon Threw four touchdown passes and ran in for another.
" He played his best game of the year by far. His passes were right on for the most part. He is starting to run alittle bit more the last two games. Once he balances both pass and run he will be able to take us to the next level." Head coach Hector Muniz said.
"But let me say something, I like the way we played as a team. The receivers made big plays today."
Derek Cantu, Rick Encina, Joey Garza,Gregg'Biggins'Trevino,'L' Leonard Walker,Martin Alvarado and BJ Gonzalez all had catches.
With a few players missing or suspended the Wrecking Crew came together filling in when needed.
The Wrecking Crew football team is now in a must win situation if they are to make the playoffs. The Wolverines are up next.
"They are coming off the nice win over a good Raiders team" Muniz said."They have a solid squad that, like us, have had some bad breaks. It should be another good one."
Only time will tell if this game is a stepping stone in the right direction or a fluke.
Once again, stay tune........

Wrecking Crew Coming Into Focus
I had a opportunity to sit down with Hector Muniz, head coach of the Wrecking Crew, and get a idea of what he thought about his team at the halfway point of the season.
"I think we our coming into focus as far players getting comfortable with their roles on the team. No disrespect to any teams we have up coming, but if we play the way we can we will have a shot the rest of the way. What I like about this squad is that we take them one game at a time." Muniz said.
Wrecking Crew 2005 record..........2-4? Not exactly a record to be excited about.
What is all the fuss over 2-4?
There are a few reason to be optimistic. One is the offense. In the last two games the offense has put up sixty points. Quarterback Mike Rincon is starting to feel comfortable in the Sixman game and has shown it in recent play throwing for eight touchdowns and running for two more.
In the Southern Conference there is a four way tie for the forth playoff spot, with the 'Crew being one of them. The top six teams from both conferences get into the playoffs at the end of the year.
"I think by getting rid of all the players that weren't in it for the long haul has made it a little easier for other players to step in. We lost three starters(2 defense,1offense) who changed the complexion of our team. They made us a little more athletic. But by losing them, we are having every player step up to the plate" Muniz said." The offense had two good showings, but I still want to see consistency. I would like to see us reel off some point on the Rhinos or Ruff Riders. We will see soon enough."
On the defensive side of the ball the situation is a little more unstable. Although the defense played better this past Sunday in a 30 to 26 win against the Wolverines, the week before they were unable to stop a powerful Rage offense. The 'Crew lost by two points.
"On that side of the ball it is a work in progress. What we need is a pure, hard core mean SOB. Honestly, that is whats missing. The type of player that can hit you and tell you about it afterwards. I think we have our best team leaders on defense and that is what is going to be the determining factor on both sides of the ball. Defensively I know that we will get it squared away."
"We are at a point in our season alot of our players have been working hard for for the past nine months. And I know at 2 and 4 your asking yourself are you crazy? Right here, right now we have a chance to play hard and win games. Only time will tell, but I like our chances" Muniz said.
Next up for the 'Crew is the Punishers." They are another team that will beat you if your not ready."
"We need to come ready to play, good practice time, know what we need to do to win. Now is not the time to take teams lightly."
So, confidence is high in the Wrecking Crew organization. Playoffs implications are at stake. Every game from here on in will have bearing on if the 'Crew will go home at seasons end or have a shot at the 'Cup' in the playoffs. The fun is about the begin.

2-4?

As usual, stay tuned..........

Wrecking Crew Roll To Victory
Brooks Park-In a game that was close at halftime, turned into a 45 to 26 victory for the 'Crew, it's second win in a row.
"We had a hard time shutting there quarterback down. Thinking about it, we never did. We did a better job in the second half of containing him." Coach Hector Muniz said." I thought we came out of the half with a purpose and that was the differences I thought. I remember looking at 'L' and saying we need to come out strong and take control. Boy did he respond."
Leonard 'L' Walker played his best game of the year with 4 touchdowns, three receiving and one on a kick return. Walker also helped out on defense.
"'L' is a game changer. He has a knack for turning something limited into something big. But what I like about him is he is a team first players. All my players are just like that.
With the 'Crew leading at halftime 19 to 14, the offense came out firing scoring on every possession in the second half.
"You would have thought we just won a close game after that field goal we made. George Ramos, our kicker, has been looking for a chance to get one.He did a great job with kicking all day long, hell, all year long." Muniz said.
"The offense is clicking and that is what you would want at this time of the season. The defense is coming along as well. That side of the ball is a work in progress." Muniz said.
The Wrecking Crew football team is playing well. And a date next Sunday is set for the 'Crew and the Maddogs, another team that has won two in a row.
"This is going to be a tough, physical game. The 'Dogs always play strong and lay you out.Plus, the coach has alot to prove to not only us, but to the league. It should be a good game."
Another week in the SFA has past and spirits our high amongst the players."We have played well of late, but its how you finish and we have a tough final four games to end the season. I expect to be competitive and win at all cost. I know we can"

Stay tuned.......
