  Welcome

Welcome to the New Home of the West Roxbury Devils

Welcome to the home of the West Roxbury chapter of the Yawkey League of Boston, West Roxbury Devils. Last season the team parted ways with five year sponsor Avi Nelson. We have taken on local sponsoships. Last year sponsors include Jay McHugh Real Estate, Boston Elks #10, Phil's Barber Shop, Deno's Pizza, Atlas True Value Hardware, McDonnell Plumbing & Heating Inc., Boston City Councilor John Tobin, William J. Gormley Funeral Home and the Corrib Pub & Restaurant. Sponsors are being accepted right now for the 2003 Season.

The site has a new feel to it this season. The site is in a league format. This will allow for viewers to get a feel for the YBL as well as the WR Broncos. To get information strictly on the West Roxbury franchise follow the team link located in the Dan Tarpey Division of the site. The official YBL website can be found in the links section. Check back often for more updates and up to the minute news from the team and the YBL.

The West Roxbury Broncos have a short but storied past. Brian Flynn (1995-1996) took over the failing Brannelly's franchise in 1995. After two years of competition in the YBL he packed his bags and headed off for the Boston Park League. Brian left the team in the hands of Paul Yates (1995-2002). Paul went out and secured Avi Nelson (1997-2001) as our sponsor, hence the West Roxbury Avi Nelson Club. For three years the team struggled mightily under Yatesy. Players were changing every game and for the most part all the local talent in West Roxbury was playing in the Park League.

Then in the 1999 season it all started to come together. The team made the playoffs for the first time, but was quickly ushered out by T's Pub of Allston in a 3 game sweep. The team underwent a little more change in 2000 as Yatesy handed the keys to the castle to Brian Hayes (1999-2002) and Mike Ryan (1996-2002). During 2000 the team challenged for the top spot in the Tarpey Conference into the last week of the season. The team squared off against the Brighton Lincoln Sox in the first round of the playoffs, but lost the deciding game of the best-of-five series.

The 2001 season started off with a couple of losses, one minor (Massi Coe 1999-2000) and one major (John Griffith 1998-2000). Through key local additions, breakout seasons, a no-hitter by Gregg Rockwell (1998-2002) and comeback stories, the WR team again challanged for the top seed in the Tarpey Conference in 2001. WR drew The McKay Club of Dorchester in the first round of the 2001 Season Playoffs in what would become a series for the ages. Sandwiched bewtween two 10 inning gems, the series went to the McKay Club in the deciding game on a tenth inning walkoff single. Many hearts were left on the field in this series.

2002 has been dealt a few surprises of it's own already without having begun. The team has parted ways with longtime sponsor, Boston Baseball legend and a great all-around guy Avi Nelson. Thank you for everything Avi. Coach Hayes has handed his keys over to Sean Tynan (1995-2002) because of impending marriage. Mike and Sean were able to get a uniform sponsor with the help of Phil Davies (1996, 1999-2002). The Broncos Baseball Developmental Organization has sponsored our new uniforms, the West Roxbury Broncos.

The 2002 WR Jay McHugh Broncos finished up their season Friday August 23 at Ronan Park in Dorchester. The team lost on a walk-off squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 8th Inning to South Boston in Game 5 of the Second Round of the YBL Playoffs, best of five series.

The 2002 WR team captured the Tarpey Division crown in the regular season with a record of 17-12-3 and secured the #3 seed in the playoffs. The Broncos swept the McKay Club of Dorchester 3-0 in the First Round of the playoffs. The Broncos battled South Boston into extra innngs of the deciding game before losing on a walk-off sqeeze play.

WR sent 5 players and a coach to the 2002 All Star Classic at Fenway Park as well. CF Dave Sheehan, C Mike Ryan, 1B Phil Davies, 2B Robbie Lepardo, SS Ryan Carey and Manager Sean Tynan.

WR To Lose All Stars, Coach

The Broncos have been dealt three key losses this off season. All Star OF's Cliff Soukup & Brian Farrell and Coach Don Hayes have both hung up their cleats in the YBL.

Cliff was an original Avi Nelson player from when Paul Yates took the team over from Brian Flynn. Cliff was an All Star and played the outfield with no regard for his body what-so-ever. Kooter's defense, leadership and after game activities will be missed.

Farrell, an All Star with the Flynn Club, came out of retirement after several years off and was an everyday starter in LF for the Broncos. He batted over .300 and he will be hard to replace this upcoming season.

Coach Don Hayes also is stepping down. After 2 + seasons with the Broncos "Beecho" is calling it quits. Don came on board as a coach when Brian Hayes took over the team from Paul Yates and stayed on with the current staff for 1 season.

"The winners in life think constantly in terms of I can, I will, and I am. Losers, on the other hand, concentrate their waking thoughts on what they should have or would have done, or what they can't do." - Dennis Waitley
