2007 Season
Welcome to the home of the West Roxbury chapter of the Yawkey League of Boston, West Roxbury Devils. The team is currently participating in the 2007 season.
The Devils selected their 2007 All Stars for the upcoming YBL All Star game to be played Sunday July, 15 2007 at the home field of the North Shore Spirit. Tickets are available at the field day of the game. Representing the Devils at the game will be C Mike Ryan, CF Jeremy Marion, P Bill Clang, and SS Ryan Carey (alternate for 1B Phil Davies).
The Devils will be collecting some hardware and inducting one of the games local legends on Saturday June 23rd at the Annual YBL Banquet. West Roxbury will be proudly inducting Avi Nelson into the YBL Hall of Fame. Avi took over as the Franchise holder of the West Roxbury team in 1997 forming the West Roxbury/Avi Nelson Club. Under Avi and the management team of Brian Hayes, Mike Ryan, and Sean Tynan the team evolved into the perennial playoff team it is today. Avi's legacy in Boston baseball lore stretches back over 5 decades and he still can be found playing the game he loves so much.
Phil Davies was named YBL Gold Glove winner for 2006 at 1B. Sean Tynan was named co-manager of the year in 2006.
2007 Rosters and stats can be found at www.yawkeybaseball.com.

WR Adds New Sponsor; Changes Team Name
The WR Chapter of the YBL has accepted new sponsorship for the 2005 season. Beantown Sports Inc. will be the new main sponsor for the team in 2005. The team will be changing the uniform colors and will be known as the West Roxbury Devils in 2005. The team looks forward to a great relationship with Beantown Sports and gears up for a championship season in 2005.
WR Mourns Two Major Losses
The WR franchise of the YBL has lost two major elements of it's 2004 and before teams. Robbie Lepardo and Steve Szathmary have both parted ways with the team effective immediately although the team still holds out hope for Lepardo's health and a recovery to full-time DH in 2005.
Lepardo was a three time All Star 2B and a Silver Slugger award winner. As well as perennially being one of the leagues top hitters, Lepardo displayed the ability to play his position at 2B like never seen before in the YBL. His defense will be missed as well as his intensity at the dish.
Shatzy (Szathmary) will be moving on to play for Somerville in the upcoming season. Due to a change of location, Steve was essentially forced to switch teams in order to keep playing his true love. Steve is the team's all-time leader in wins, era, and strikeouts. His guts and determination on the mound made him the bulldog on the WR team that opposing teams have feared for the past 7 seasons. Steve is a four time YBL All Star, three with WR.
On behalf of the board for WR, we wish both players the best with their futures and hope they keep their bond with the team alive for years to come.
WR Celebrate Silver Slugger and Gold Glove Awards
WR 1B Phil Davies and 2B Robbie Lepardo won major awards for the 2004 YBL season. Davies took home the Gold Glove for his work around the bag at first. This is the first Gold Glove for Davies.
Lepardo took home his second Silver Slugger award at second. Robbie has been amongst the leagues top hitters since his introduction to the league and finished in the top 10 in hitting this past season at .406, with 12 doubles.
WR Sends Four Players to AS Game at Fenway Park
WR Sent four players to 2004's AS Classic at historic Fenway Park. P Steve Szathmary, C Joe Kehoe, 2B Robbie Lepardo, and 3B/LF Brian Farrell were selected by their teammates to play in the game.
This was Szathmary's fourth selection, three with WR, one with Boston Padres. Szathmary continues to prove year in and out the he is one of the leagues top tier pitchers. It was Lepardo's third consecutive appearance at 2B making him among the elite at his position in the Boston area. Kehoe was selected to his third Fenway All-Star game. This is his second consecutive with WR, he also was selected once in the Park League AS Game. Joe has solidified himself as one of the YBL's most feared hitters. Farrell, after taking a year off for work reasons, came back to the team like a man possessed and had an AS season. This is Brian's fourth trip to Fenway, twice each in the YBL and Park League.
WR Congratulates 3 Silver Slugger Award Winners and ROY
As well as inducting Brian Hayes into the YBL Hall of Fame, WR collected four other pieces of hardware at the 2004 YBL Banquet. C Mike Ryan, 1B Phil Davies, and DH Joe Kehoe all received Silver Slugger Awards from the league for being the top hitting players at their respective positions.
Kehoe also went on to win the first ever YBL Rookie of the Year Award, splitting the honor with McKay Club's excellent young pitcher Brian Schilling. Joe was an All-New England Selection as a Sr at Babson and has brought his reputation as a dominant hitter to WR.
Brian Hayes Inducted Into YBL Hall Of Fame
Brian Hayes was inducted into the YBL Hall of Fame for the Class of 2004.
Brian Hayes is the person most responsible for turning the West Roxbury franchise of the YBL in the right direction. Brian grew up in Dedham, MA. He played his Little League, Babe Ruth, and Legion Ball in Dedham. He went on to play at Catholic Memorial HS in West Roxbury where he was all Catholic Conference. Brian then played his collegiate baseball at Plymouth State College. He played all four years at PSC and graduated in 1997. Brian got his first taste of the Yawkey Baseball League playing for the Quincy Sheriffs during his college summers.
Brian first came on the team in 1998 through a recommendation of Mike Ryan, who played 3 season with Brian at both CM and PSC. He played half the season before injuring his wrist, but the team made the playoffs for the first time because of Brian's contribution both on the field and in the dugout after his injury. Brian is a five tool player, and we knew right away his impact on the team would last for years to come.
Brian took over managing the team his next year in 1999. With a healed wrist and new eye glasses, Brian went on the become one of the top five players in the YBL for the next 3 years. Brian hit an astonishing .496 in his final season in the YBL while batting leading off for West Roxbury. The team made the playoffs every year he played and the streak of making the playoffs is still intact because the team's core is the team he assembled. Brian moved to Western Massachusetts to be with his new bride Jen before the start of the 2002 season and continues to play baseball, though be it with aluminum bats. Brian is a two time YBL All Star and a multiple Gold Glove and Silver Slugger winner. It's with great pride that West Roxbury inducts Brian Hayes into the YBL Hall of Fame.
Lepardo Named To MASCAC All Second Team
Congratulations to WR Broncos 2B Robbie Lepardo who was named to the All MASCAC Second Team.

WR Holds End of the Year BBQ
The team recently held it's end of the year BBQ at Coach Mike Ryan's house. There was a good showing of the core players that made this year a productive, but not sucessful, season. All players who did not show or forgot to return their uniforms at the BBQ are asked to make plans to return uniforms to either Mike Ryan or Sean Tynan.
The team is going to make efforts to get the team together on a monthly basis for social events (adult beverages in public places). The next event will take place October 20. I am going to make tee times for whoever wants to play on Sunday 10/20 at Brook Meadow Golf Course. More details to follow...
