2008 ALL-STARS RECAP
2008 All-Stars Recap
Baseball
Juniors Division (13-14 yr olds)
The West Portage team finished with a 1-2 record in the 12-team tournament. After a high-scoring loss to Eastwood (eventual 3rd place finishers), the team came back with a win over Northwood-Plainwell before losing their second game, this time to the eventual champs South Portage.
Major Division (11-12 yr olds)The American division team finished with a 2-2 record in the 15-team tournament. After a tough draw to start with the eventual champion West Portage National team, the Americans dropped into the losers’ bracket after their first game. They then bounced back with consecutive victories over Alamo and Northwood-Plainwell before bowing out with a loss to the 4th place Lakeview team.
The National division team finished with a perfect 5-0 record to win West Portage’s first district title since 2004. The team moved on to the 16-team State Tournament in Bay City and finished with a 1-2 record in pool play, beating Traverse City and losing to Bay City (the eventual state champs) and St. Clair Shores.
10-11 DivisionThe combined American/National team finished with a perfect 4-0 record to win West Portage’s first-ever 10-11 district title. The team moved on to the 16-team State Tournament in Grosse Pointe. In pool play, West Portage finished with a 2-2 record with victories over Commerce and Bay City and losses to Grosse Pointe (the eventual state champs) and Decatur (in extra innings). The team then advanced to the quarterfinals where they lost a close game to Western 5-3. Every game was exciting with the win or loss coming by 1 or 2 runs, including the loss to Grosse Pointe 6-4 (noteworthy considering GP won its other six games by a combined score of 87-5).
9-10 DivisionThe American division team finished with a 4-2 record, good for 4th place in the 15-team tournament. After a close 6-5 loss in the opening game, the Americans ran off a string of 4 wins in the losers’ bracket with wins over Westwood, West Portage National, Alamo and Parchment before taking a loss to South Portage 8-5.
The National division team finished with an 0-2 record. After dropping their first game to Eastwood (eventual 3rd place finishers), the Nationals hit a tough draw against the WP American team to close out their tournament run.
Softball
Major Division (11-12 yr olds)
The West Portage team finished with a 3-2 record and took 3rd place in the 8-team tournament. After a victory over Milwood in the opening game, the team dropped into the losers’ bracket with a loss to eventual champions Eastwood. West Portage then claimed consecutive wins against Parchment and Alamo before taking a second loss, once again to Eastwood.
9-10 DivisionThe West Portage team finished with a 4-2 record and took 2nd place in the 8-team tournament. After a victory over Delton-Kellogg in the opening game, the team dropped into the losers’ bracket with a 10-run loss to Parchment. West Portage then ran off three straight wins against Eastwood, South Portage and Galesburg-Augusta to earn a rematch against still-undefeated Parchment in the championship round. West Portage won the first game 15-7 to force a second and final game, but Parchment pulled out the victory in that contest (Parchment went on to place 4th in the State Tournament in Cheyboygan).
