The opening of the new ballpark known as Oriole Park was a spectacular success (photos coming soon. Among the many features are the shaded dugout and the retractable roof over the outfield seating area (described by architects as "if you took the cafe-style Budweiser Pavilion and located it on top of the centerfield wall") Steak and hot dogs on the grill added to the day's enjoyment.
There were 4 exciting games played, highlighted by great hitting performances by young Will O'Neill and a 4 HR day by Andrew DeMarco (Including 2 mammoth upper deck shots estimated at 120+ feet). With the reduced number of teams, full stats were not available, however the HR totals will be updated to reflect yesterdays results.
The First World Series of Wiffle Ball event was held on Sunday, August 16 in Saugus, Mass. According to Peter Gammons, "This event is a veritable Who's Who of wiffleball legends, with all four teams laden with current and future Hall of Famers. This event will go far in settling many of the age-old arguments as to who are the greatest of all time."
Congratulations to Knuckleheads 3 for winning the World Series of Wiffle Ball in impressive fashion. Jimmy Mulligan led the way, hurling three one-hit shutouts and leading the tournament in batting average as well. This Championship squad also included Craig Sarno, Paul Willis, Jon Martorella and Steven Lania. They will receive the WSOW Championship Ribbons, and their career stats will permanently carry the asterisk denoting a championship win.
There were some exciting games and many outstanding hitting and pitching performances - - - the talent did not disappoint. Stats are available on the Player Stats page.
There were great performances by some renowned old-timers and some star athletes in their prime, but perhaps the most surprising were the impressive and competitive outings by the youngest players. These rookies definitely look like the next group of up-and-coming stars. Steve Morgante and Codi Breen each broke up No-Hitters by logging the only hits, while Codi also managed to strike out 6 big-time hitters in his five innings on the mound. Newcomer Stephen Caloggero reached base safely 8 times in 18 plate appearances while facing some elite pitchers.
