History of WTW Girls Lacrosse
The Northern Region implemented the sport of girls' lacrosse as a club during the 1992/93 season. Coached by Don Gasser, the girls experienced immediate success by finishing their first season as Northern Region runner-ups to eventual champion, Robinson. During the next season, girls' lacrosse became sanctioned by the VHSL and became an official varsity sport. Darah Bonham became head coach in 1995. While the 1995 season started off with a loss to Robinson, the girls won their last 16 games to capture the Concorde District Championship and the Northern Region Title. Woodson ended Robinson High School's three-year championship reign with a 6-3 defeat. During the 1995/96 season, the girls picked up where they left off by
winning their first 14 games to capture the Concorde District Title and to run their unbeaten steak to 30 consecutive games.
The 1996/97 was also very successful for Woodson, as the team, lead by 13 seniors, captured its 2nd Northern Region Title with a 13-7 victory over South Lakes. The 1997 team went on to the State Championship game and defeated Albemarle of Charlottesville 13-11 to win the Virginia State Championship. This marked the 2nd year of a VA State Championship and Woodson became the 1st school from Northern Virginia to win the title. Woodson finished the season 14-3.
1997/98 brought new challenges to the school as Woodson only returned seven players from the previous season. With only one senior on the squad the team went on to become Co-Champions of the Concorde District and made a return visit to the Northern Region Championship game vs. Oakton. While Woodson lost to Oakton 13-9 they finished their successful season with a record of 11-4.
1998/99 was an unbelievable year. Lead by 9 Seniors the squad had an unprecedented undefeated season finishing 18 wins and zero losses. Champions for the Concorde District, the Northern Region and the unofficial State Champions!
Woodson has compiled a record of 98 wins and 14 losses over the past six years (88%). Versus the Northern Region, Woodson is 96-9 (91%). The only Northern Region Teams to beat Woodson are Robinson, Jefferson, Oakton, West Springfield, and Fairfax.
