Woodcreek High School Sportsmens Club: NRA Shotgun Qualifications Program

Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program
SHOTGUN QUALIFICATION

Trap • Skeet • Sporting Clays

Here at the WHS Sportsmen's Club, we participate in the Trap portion under the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program. Qualification shooting can help you develop the shotgun shooting skills that lead to success in any one (or all) of these activities. The Trap courses of fire focus shooters on the whole (complete game) from the very beginning. In this way, shooters can develop their skills at the same time they participate in club shoots, leagues, and practice sessions. Any qualifying score fired in a club shoot, league, or practice session can be applied to the qualification rating the shooter is currently working on. Whichever shotgun event you choose, you can improve your shotgun shooting skills with the proportioned and progressive challenges offered in the qualification shooting program.

Shotguns:    Any safe shotgun, 12 gauge or smaller, may be used. Different gauges and different  guns can be used for any round or rating.
Ammunition:  Any shotgun ammunition (factory) may be used,

Targets: Standard clay targets are used
Position: Shooters have the option of mounting the shotgun on the shoulder before calling for the
Field: Any hand, manual or automatic trap may be used.
Rules: Unless otherwise stated, Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) rules apply for trap. To obtain trap rules, call ATA at (937) 898-4638.

The year will be the third year that the WHS Sportsmen’s Club will be participating in the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program.  Our Club participates in the Trap Program. The following is a brief overview of the Trap Program.

The Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualifications Program is broken down into 6 levels.  The levels are Pro-Marksman, Marksman, Marksman 1st Class, Sharpshooter, Expert and Distinguished Expert. In order to move up to the next level, you have to meet shooting requirements (see above chart).  Once you have completed the requirements of the current level you are in, you will receive a patch and certificate and more importantly, qualify for participation at the next level.

The idea behind this program help each participant become a better shooter and to  acknowledge the shooter improvement at specific points in his or her learning stages. It's not about breaking targets.

Key Points of the program:

Your scores don’t have to be consecutive (in a row) in order to qualify for the next level.

Qualifying scores will only be done on designated days throughout the season.

Your scores at the tournaments will count towards qualifying for the NRA Program. So for example, if you are at the Sharpshooter rating (17 or better for 6 times) and you have 3 qualifying scores going into a tournament and at the tournament you shoot a 18 or better in each of your 4 rounds, you qualify to move up to the next ranking of Expert.

While participating in an qualifying round, you can not receive any coaching or help.

There is no time limited to this program.  You can complete it over several seasons.

How the Program is run at WHS Sportsmen's Club.

We have set aside specific days in our season for you to participate and shoot in the NRA Qualifications program.  During those specified days, one of the two rounds that you shoot can be for the this program.  The other will be for practice.

Why only one round?  Our goal is to help you become better shooters.  In order to accomplish that goal, we need the ability to observe, analyze and help you with the basic fundamentals as well as assisting you in making those minor adjustments to your game.

The cost of the program is $80.00.  This includes the patches and certificates.  This is not refundable.

This is an optional program and you are not required to participate.  Not participating in the NRA Program will not affect your status with the team or your ability to participate in the tournaments.

The Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification program coordinator for the 2011 season is Coach Alex.
