All,
After the recent tragic news from Spotsylvania Little League, it is a good time to review our Lightning Policy and Procedures. See excerpt from WBLL 2009 Safety Plan below. Please note that when play is stopped, please have kids go to their cars with parents or inside of building if possible. Kids wandering around outside or in the bleachers still leaves them at risk as the episode in Spotsylvania shows.
Also, during the EOS tournament, it is critical that kids do NOT leave with their parents until the game has been cancelled, suspended or restarted. There is a 20 minute evaluation period after each lightning strike within the 8 mile or 30 second range but if possible, we will try to restart games after the threat has passed while we still have available light or time within curfew (10pm on Vets 1&2 and 10:45 on Vets 3) Fortunately, we have not had to deal with tragedy like Spotsylvania's, lets keep it that way!
INFORMATION FROM THE WOODBRIDGE LL 2009 SAFETY PLAN:
Lightning:
-
If threatening skies appear or when thunder is heard, close monitoring of conditions shall begin.
-
If Lightning Detector (set at 8 mile range) signals, play shall be suspended immediately.
-
If Lightning Detector is not available or in opinion of the umpire or higher authority the Lightning Detector is malfunctioning the “flash-bang” should be used if lightning is present. If less than 30 seconds elapses between flash-bang, play shall be suspended immediately.
*Play shall not resume until 20 minutes have elapsed from the last 30-second flash-bang count or 8 mile range signal. Example:
-
Play is suspended at 6:30pm due to lightning.
-
At 6:40pm, a lightning strike within the threshold is noted; play may not resume until 7:00pm.
-
Conditions will continue to be monitored closely and play may be re-suspended as necessary.
During Suspended Play, players should:
-
Leave the dugout/field area with parents. Get players to walk, not run, to their cars but stay in the area until play is resumed or game is cancelled.
-
Stay away from metal including fencing and bleachers.
-
Do not hold metal bats.

Park Authority Names Vets Baseball Complex
On April 17, 2009, the Prince William County Park Authority officially named the Little League Baseball Complex at Veterans Memorial Park after former Park Authority Board member Stewart "Stu" Christiano. In his more than 30-year service on the Board (1978-2008), Mr. Christiano proved his committment to the community, from the creation and development of the parks and recreation system to the 2008 passing of the Prince William County Comprehensive Plan chapters on parks, open space, and trails.
