To our entire Woodbridge Little League Community
Today, we closed down the 2011 season at Vets Park as DTQ won the Seniors State Championship. I cannot express how proud I am to be involved with the Woodbridge Little League. We have such great members, from our players and their families, our great managers and coaches, our umpires, concession stand (boy was it hot in there) and of course, the most dedicated people I have ever known, our board members.
This year, we took on what many said was more than we can chew. We had the 2011 D9 Majors all stars at vets. That was a long 16 days of baseball, with people coming from all over Prince William and Fairfax to watch games. We never missed a beat, and nobody left Vets Park without saying what a great job we did hosting this tournament.
Then, surprise, Woodbridge was asked to host the D9 Seniors All Star Tournament with about 2 weeks notice? This was another week of great baseball, and again, everyone complemented us on how well it went.
In between all of this, we hosted game 1 in the best of 3 between the DTQ Big League Team and our own guys (more about them later). We pulled this off while the majors were going on.
Finally, we hosted the 2011 Virginia State Seniors All Stars. So much work went into this that the servers would crash if I told you everything, but here is the summary.
We hosted about 300+ people at Vets last Thursday for the opening picnic. Hard Times and Glory Days prepared the food, and I can't tell you how happy some of those kids from WAY FAR AWAY were with the food, as well as our facility. It was a great night. Then, on Friday morning, the tournament started and we held games on both Vets 3 & 4 for 4 straight days, with the games continuing on at Vets 3 until today. We had the fields dragged between every game. (Our Park Authority is second to none) and we transported water back and forth from every dugout as soon as they got low. We had some of the greatest kids (Buchino, Kim, Marino(s), Robinson, just to name a few) driving a golf cart for no less than 200 trips back and forth. They transported umpires to and from the fields. We had both fields fully staffed with PRECESSIONAL announcers. We had scorekeepers, pitch counters and of course, officials from D9 helping everywhere.
Our clubhouse was like a Frathouse. We had umpires everywhere, and there was never a dull moment. I have a greater respect for umpires than ever before, as these guys were out there in 100 plus weather, and when we lost one due to the heat, another suited up, and got out there to help out. We had food deliveries coming from sponsors, and great help from our families (thanks to the Nelson Girls) in making sure that everyone was fed, and watered down).
We sold a ton of merchandise and thanks to Lisa Stokes and others, we always had somebody pushing the sales. We sold out of almost every item.
Every day, we had people step up and fill in when needed. Even DTQ offered to help, and had parents available as needed. They may be our rivals, but a great group of people we should all get to know better, as were the hundreds of parents, siblings, grandparents etc who traveled here to root their team on. I am grateful that I got to talk to most of these people.
While all of this was going on, our Big League Team won the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, and went on to Fort Lauderdale to play for the SE Regional championship. Even though they ended up as runners up to South Carolina, we feel like they are champions, as they are our team. The SC team is a district team, meaning they get the pick of the litter to play for them, and well, we have Woodbridge LL ONLY on our team. That sure says a lot about our guys. They are OUR TEAM, not some group of players who we don't know playing on a team where they may be meeting each other for the 1st time. We all owe them a big thank you on how they represented US at these tournaments. What a great group of young men. I personally cannot wait to see them next year, as Manager Joe Wirth will be returning with another World Series contender.
In closing, none of the things I mention above would be possible without all of you. We have a great league. We always will have room for improvement, but I am positive that no other league has the quality of volunteers that we have. I know I will miss a few people, because there are so many, but I want to name a few, who without, we would be in big trouble:
-
Marty Nelson (and Family)
-
Duncan Stokes (Lisa &Devon)
-
George, Betsy, Brody and Bubba Marino
-
Danny Buchino (and Michael)
-
John Horner (and Family)
-
Rick Czarnowsky
-
Mike Flood
-
Joel Robinson (and Brandon)
-
Lindsey Spence
-
Jarrod Wronski and Matt Kraus (greatest LL announcers ever)
-
Ray Bennett
-
Joe Wirth
-
and last but not least, Donnie Hensley, Tournament Director.
We had so many compliments about WLL and Vets Park, that I cannot even begin to tell you how much our out of town guests (as well as the other local teams from Fairfax and Loudoun County) complemented us, and us means Woodbridge LL.
Please make sure the next time you are in Carraba's, Glory Days, Silver Diner, Buffalo Wild Wings and Papa Johns, let them know how much we all appreciate that they sponsored food every day at this tournament.
Thank you all for a great 2011. I look forward to seeing you all around WOODBRIDGE over the Fall and Winter, and of course, the 2012 season.
