Rugen signs for Nighthawks
Wolverine standout DT Carl Rugen returns to his former club the Merseyside Nighthawks. At 6'3" and 340lbs Rugen was a big hit (in all senses of the word) at the Wolverines since being signed from the Nighthawks in 2001. Playing initially at Centre under then Head Coach Paul Day, Carl finally achieved his career wish to play on defense under former Head Coach Tony Mulhall where he became a major impact. He was sorely missed by the seniors in 2004 due to nagging injuries.
Rugen has pledged his final playing days to his hometown club. He is also involved in coaching his son who plays for the Merseyside Predators youth team. We wish him all the best and hope to see him finally settle into the coaching ranks somewhere at a later date.

Lions do it in France!
The GB Lions make it 3 out of 3 during their Group B tour in France, beating the hosts 18-17 in very difficult circumstances.
Congratulations go to the whole GB Lions squad, and especially to Wolverines: Adam Biggs, Craig McDonnell,
Phil McGrath and Craig Pennington.
A special salute to ex-Wolverines and current London O's WR Tamas Byrne who in the final game scored
a 30+ yard TD and made an interception!

London Blitz Scrimmage
It was another bad day up in Bolton with the hailstone and high winds, not the best conditions for a game of football. Also with the short notice of the scrimmage and it being Mothers Day we didn’t have the best turn out with only 24 players turning out for the wolverines.
The day started early for me at 7.00am as I was helping Coach Blinkhorn mark the pitch out, we was going to do it on the Saturday but the weather was really bad with 82mph winds and rain so we decided Sunday morning would be the best time to do it but the weather was still bad and we got drenched but when it did stop raining the wind was that strong it dried us out again.
It only took us a couple of hours to do and for helping out Coach Blinkhorn treated me to a big breakfast at his house well watching the Delaware Wing-T in action it was very impressive watching the college team run the Wing-T and destroying the team they where playing against with some of the plays we have already learnt, they didn’t know what hit them like Doncaster didn’t the week before when we ran some of the running plays.
11.00am we loaded the car and set off for Rob Tingle when we arrived at Harper Green it was straight in to the changing rooms and in to our kit, with the space I had in there I new we had some players missing which wasn’t good and some of the players where having pre game nerves too, after playing rugby league from the age of 8 I’ve long since got over the butterflies before games, now I just try to focus on what I need to do and run through the plays in my head.
Our team Captain, Craig Pennington soon had us warmed up and lying on the wet turf stretching, then form running. The London Blitz had brought a fair size team down and we only had about 24 but still "the show must go on" and if nothing else it gave us rookies a run out against a first division team. Their defensive line was weak in strength but fast and new what they were doing. On our first drive they came out grunting and snarling at us hahahah, I fired off the line and took the DE clean off his feet and landed on top of him, he stopped snarling after that. To be fair they hit harder than Doncaster but still didn’t cause me any problems and I managed to go unbeaten all game again.
Our Defense covered the pass well this week and most of the running game but they had a little RB that was proving to be a handful on some plays, he was fast but really small he looked like a good player and should give the D a taste of what’s to come next week against John Sunderland at East Kilbride, the offence wasn’t working against the blitz, the rain and strong wind was playing murder with the passing game and there formation was stopping the line blocking where it needed to for the HB`s on the running game, and there LB`s where fast and killed the out side run.
I pulled my first cut block off on a LB in the scrimmage but paid the price for it by cutting my knee and leg on the astro turf. I also did something to my right hand, I cant move two of my fingers properly and my palm is swollen, this really is a tough game and anyone that’s thinking of giving it ago be prepared for all the knocks, cuts, bruises and swollen body parts you will get every week you play or practice, you do pick more bangs up playing other teams as you tend to hold back a bit on your team mates in training but at the same time its great fun and a good way to keep fit, not sure about healthy but "hey" you cant have everything!
Game One - EKP Away
4th of April 2004 pre season is now over and are first game against the east kilbride pirates is today
My day started at 5.45am to get ready for the long trip north, at 7am coach blinkhorn arrived to pick me up then we went on to pick up mr T (rob tingle) and then we where off, we arrived up there around 10.30am it was nice and sunny and warm
Slowly everyone started turning up a couple at a time and in total i think we had around 36 players made it up there a big improvement from last years 18 and a big boost for us as a team as we where unsure with the poor turn outs at practice just how many people where committed to the team
In the changing rooms no one seemed bothered about playing the pirates after all there only the northern champions, the music was blasting and mr T was having a pre game kip on the floor, that lad will sleep anywhere LoL
2pm we made are way down to the field and as normal when a wolverines helmet is brought out into the day light the sun went in and the heavens opened as this satanic team marched down to the field in full battle dress ready to lose blood for wolverines name and the battle for the north
The game started bad where on the first play EKP completed a long pass for a TD BOLLOCKS i thought to myself!!!! so after the kick off it was over to the offence, jogging on to the field i new i was up against 2 GB Lions so i thought i best make sure i hit them hard to stop them breaking the line, the first play we ran the ball and the pirates D-line didnt know what hit them, from the snap the DT was running at matt the right guard when matt pulled behind me and i crashed down into the side of the DT driving him into the other DT after the play he looked around with a "what happening then" look on hes face hehehhe!!! it did take a couple of series for the offence to get going and are defence was doing a good job of keeping EKP out the end zone but late on in the first they scored from 2 yards to take the score to 14-0
From there on are offence and defense both had a good period tell half time where we started getting are running game going and we ripped there D-line to bits are HB`s getting stopped by there linebackers so it was steady progress down the field, the passing game wasnt working so EKP got wise to this and moved closer in to stop are run, the punishment you take on the line is unbelievable when we came off for half time i was bleeding from both legs one was an injury from the blitz scrimmaged opened up again am going to have to stop knocking people over as there helmets have a habit of smashing my shines on there way down and my left arm was really sore from one of are running backs deciding that my elbow needed smashing with he`s helmet to improve my blocking hehehe think he slipped in the back field and collided with me
After the break we started slow again instead of keeping them on the back foot like we did in the 2nd 1/4 we let them back into the game :-) but are defense held out tell late in the 3rd 1/4 where they went in again, in the 4th 1/4 we just lost the plot and gave them the game with some slip ups the pirates also changed there D-line around for the 4th as we where all over them and they had no answer to are line blocking,
I frustrated the crap out of there DE no 91 who had swapped sides with the other DE on the first play he tried to run through me, it wasnt happening so he tried on the next 2 plays to go around me that wasnt working as i just took him on a big circle and kept him away from the QB so he got really angry and tried to wind me up by shouting "fat bastard" at me hehehe i just smiled at him and hit him harder on the next play :-) when we came off the field percy game over to me and said what a great job i was doing and to keep it up which was a big boost for me as on the O-line we dont normally get noticed on less we balls it up so cheers adam it carried me on through the last 5 mins where my injurys where starting to get the better of me, what a great leader and that pass he made to dave herd right down the middle in between them two LB`s was first class
Going back to 91 he did beat me once and is the first person to do so in the 3 teams i have faced up to now in the last min of the game when my legs had gone he took me wide then cut back inside me and i was to bollocked after playing hard for the full game to respond fast enough so well done you managed in the end to out maneuver an old out of shaped fat rookie in my first game once hehehhehe but he paid for it big time because rugen cut blocked him and hurt him it took him a good 30 seconds to get up off the floor
the last play of the game was funny there was 9 seconds left on the clock we was going to run a draw but EKP shouted draw so we went back to the huddle and percy just said "line on block WR`s just run some patterns down field"
We did lose the game but the ref said its the best wolverines team he has seen in a long time and we have a lot of plus points to build on, the turn out was great the O-line won the battle in the trenches with very little practice together all the rookies played well and young adam biggs was first class winning the MVP in he`s first game with some great tackles 11 in total and i do believe we have closed the gap between us and them and could well turn them over at are place at the end of may if we all get down to practice we could have a great season and push for the north are selves :-)

Former Colt off to a flyer in BSL
In October 2003, he was part of Geoff Leigh's Colts that played against Clyde Valley Hawks in the YKL British final at Dewbsury. In December, he was part of the Team England youth kitted side that beat Team Scotland (in Dewsbury again). Yesterday, he had to travel much further to take on the Scots, as Adam Biggs made his BSL debut against the East Kilbride Pirates, turning in an eleven-tackle, Defensive MVP performance. Former Colt and current Seniors player, Darren Carr, described him as 'a credit to the youth program'.
(HeadCoach's footnote) I believe Adam also won a GB cap against Holland last year as well. Potentially a great player.
