Matt Sheahan selected as National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete and Waterbury Republican All Academic Team
The Gene Casey-New Haven County Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame will honor its scholar-athletes and several other award winners Sunday, March 25, at its 47th annual banquet at Fantasia in North Haven (12 noon reception, 1 p.m. meal).
The chapter was founded in 1962 and this year will mark the introduction of the 1000th scholar-athlete winner.
The scholar-athlete list includes 30 players from member schools. They are Mike Bagnoli (Daniel Hand-Madison), Greg Barron (Branford), Matt Capozziello (North Haven), Nick Child (East Haven), Andrew Corridore (Naugatuck), Anthony Cottiero (North Branford), Daniel Crane (Holy Cross-Waterbury), Frank D'Angelo (Woodland-Beacon Falls), Benjamin Germain (Watertown), Matt Glynn (Xavier-Middletown), Marc Gosselin (Jonathan Law-Milford), Joshua Gudjohnsen (Hopkins-New Haven), Thomas Izzo (Derby), Ernico Jones (Wilbur Cross-New Haven), Matthew Labonia (Cheshire), Jeffrey Lombardi (Notre Dame-West Haven), Sean Mancini (Shelton), Matthew Marcus (Hamden), Evan McGloin (Guilford), Sean McGowan (Ansonia), Kevin O'Leary (Maloney-Meriden), James Oligino (St. Joseph-Trumbull), Michael Pappa (Fairfield Prep), Michael Pascale (Platt-Meriden), Lawrence Sequino (Amity Regional-Woodbridge), Matthew Sheahan (Wolcott), Kevin Small (Hamden Hall), Semphone Sonenarong (Hyde Leadership-New Haven), Kevin Whalen (Sheehan-Wallingford) and Terrall Wilks (Hillhouse-New Haven).
The chapter will honor state championship teams from Hillhouse, Ansonia and Holy Cross as well as New England Prep C champ Hopkins.
Dan Martin will receive the chapter official recognition award while the merit award goes to New Haven city-wide athletic director Joe Canzanella and the Distinguished American award to Connecticut Supreme Court Justice Flemming L. Norcott, Jr.
Senior receiver Matt Sheahan was selected to the Waterbury Republican All Academic Team. Matt has several achievements and accomplishments including being a member of the National Honor Society and being ranked 36th out of 202 students. His athletic achievements include Team MVP, All-NVL second team selection, Football Team Captain, SS Champion Weightlifting Team Captain and Track Team Captain. He was awarded the Michael's Jewelers Character Award in 2006. Matt plans on attending the University of Connecticut, Storrs in the fall of 2007.
