Even though our Complex is Beautiful we are still far from finished. There is always something more to do and a new project begining. We have just installed fencing around all of the fields to seperate the team and coaches from the parents. Also we have just installed a 16' x 8' remote controlled scoreboard. Along with that we are now working on the clearing and escavation of an area above the football field to install grandstands in the future.

We would like to Thank Scott Rossignol, Scottie Rossignol, Robert Fernandez, BJ Nadeau, Ron Gambino, Don Phelps, Mark Fillipone, and Dave Bruillette for their hard work to install the new scoreboard. Also Raymonds Lumber for letting us use their boom truck to set the beams and the board.

Tuesday, December 30
Eagles Number 2 in the Nation
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The slumped shoulders, long faces and tear-filled eyes told the story. This wasn’t the way the Wolcott Eagles had expected their national championship run to end.On Friday afternoon, at Disney’s Wide World of Sports, the Eagles’ Cinderella season struck midnight with a 32-6 loss to the West Valley Falcons of San Jose, Calif., in the Pop Warner Junior Midget Division II Super Bowl. “You’re No. 2 in the country. There’s no shame in that,” Wolcott head coach Bob Fernandez told his players in the postgame huddle. “I can’t be more proud of a group of players than I am of you. You’re the best team I’ve ever coached.” From the game’s first possession, it was clear the Eagles were going to be in for a long afternoon. Following a decent return by Joey Lynch on the game’s opening kickoff, the Eagles went to work on their own 33-yard line. But a short gain by Nicholas Gambacini and two runs by Anthony Ortiz Jr. that netted only one yard forced Wolcott to punt. “That’s the first time we’ve punted since we’ve been down here,” one of the Eagles assistant coaches remarked. It wouldn’t be their last. In fact, it would be a preview of things to come as Wolcott’s high-powered offense was all but extinguished by the Falcons. Ortiz was held to just 19 yards. “We couldn’t get anything moving up front. They just keyed in on our three backs and shut us down,” Fernandez said. “It’s the first time all year we’ve been held to under 200 yards rushing as a team all year. Give them credit. They’ve got serious strength on that team, and they held us in check the entire game.”
After recovering a Wolcott fumble, West Valley’s John Bognanno scampered 18 yards up the middle for the first touchdown. The Falcons then kicked a two-point conversion (in Pop Warner junior midgets, a kick is worth two points; a run worth one) to take an 8-0 lead with 1:46 left in the first quarter. The Falcons looked ready to score again late in the second quarter but Wolcott’s James Nelson pried the ball loose and then recovered the fumble. The play gave the Eagles momentum heading into the second half. The optimism was short-lived, though, as the Falcons strung together an eight-play drive capped by a 19-yard touchdown run by Brady Austin. The Eagles only managed 46 yards in the entire first half and hadn’t so much as sniffed the end zone. But Wolcott hadn’t made it this far without possessing a ton of heart and ability. A fumble recovery by Gambacini kept Wolcott’s next drive alive and put the Eagles in their best field position of the day. A direct snap to Lynch, who then tossed a strike to quarterback turned receiver Brett Lanzara, gave Wolcott a first-and-goal inside the West Valley 3. The third quarter ended with Wolcott just inches from paydirt. A penalty then negated a Lynch touchdown run and moved Wolcott back to the 5. Again, Lynch got the call. After being hit at the line and stood up, the 12-year-old seventh-grader broke free to the outside and bulldozed into the end zone. The missed conversion left the gap at 16-6 with 9:49 left in the game. The Falcons wasted no time negating the score. Austin raced to a 53-yard gain before being caught from behind at the 1. West Valley’s Tyler Howe scored on the next play, and the Falcons had a 24-6 comfortable margin. Austin tacked on another touchdown run in the game’s waning minutes.
“This is yours,” Fernandez told his team as he held up the runner-up trophy. “We’re from a town of 15,000. They’re from a city of (974,000). You’ve got nothing to be ashamed of. I’m so proud of you. No. 2 in the country … that’s awesome!” As Fernandez walked off the field, tears filled the coach’s eyes. He stopped for a minute, gathered his thoughts and took one look back at the field. A parent grabbed him from behind.“You made this happen,” he told the coach. “Remember what you just told the kids. Second in the nation. That’s pretty darn good.”
Indeed it is.

JR. Midgets Win National Semi-final and Advance to National Championship Game

 EAGLES OVERCOME MORE

ADVERSITY AND ADVANCE TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!

PhotobucketPhotobucket

The Eagles arrived in Walt Disney World Florida Sunday Afternoon on a quest to win a national championship. When they arrived there was a huge sign that said Disney World's Year of A Million Dreams, well Wolcott had just one and  here it was becoming a reality. On Monday morning the boys woke up bright and early and jumped on a bus to go get weighed in at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and there was a lot of nerves about all the heavy weights we had on our team that just barley made weight all year, all the big boys stepped on the scale and made it by a good 4-5 lbs a shock to the coaches and players, but to their great surprise there was one person who did not make the wieght but it was not for being to heavy. There is a minimum weight also, yes a minimum weight, and the oldest kid on the team Christopher Petillo was 83.7 lbs and he needed to be 85. This would disqualify him from playing the first game for the eagles. The coaches and parents fought it to death expressing that the kid has made it this far and was above the weight all year, just because he got sick the night before you are going to deny him the ability to play in a once in a lifetime oppurtunity after his family spent a large amount of money to get down here and they simply answered ... RULES ARE RULES. Well with every bad comes a good because though it was heartbreaking for Chris, his family, the team, and the other familes it also gave our players that extra drive to give all they had out on the field to get Chris another game because if they won he would have another chance to weighed in. After all the bad the boys lightend up thier day with a trip to Disneys Animal Kingdom and had tons of fun on rides such as Expedition Everest and Dinosour and also got to see some cool animals on an African Safari. The Boys got home early, had a nice little pizza party by the pool, and then headed to bed for their 9:00pm Curfew. After a good nights rest, the boys woke up and were ready to play football. They entered the Complex in amazement on how truly great of an oppurtunity it was to be where they were and saw the caliper of field it was. Right before the game after Coach Bobby's pre-game speech, star corner-back and slot back who may be the smallest kid on the team, but hits harder then anyone, who was denied the ability to play, stood up and said

 Photobucket

"BOYS I WANNA PLAY IN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP"

and that was the spark our boys needed to give them the drive to soar to success. The boys came out hungry and new they had to leave it all on the field for "Hitman", (Chris). We recieved the ball first and as usual our offense drove right down 60 yards lead by running back Tony Ortiz, and scored making it 6-0. Our defense came out strong and buried them in the backfield on the first play. Unfortunatly on the second play they got around the end and took a long run for a touchdown since the fill in for Chris was usually a defensive end and was not comfortable with his responsibilites yet. The offense continued to roll through out the game even after more adversity struck when Starting center Louie Cambino suffered a shoulder injury and was taken out. The eagles went on to score 31 points with 5 rushing toudowns, 3 from Ortiz (220yrds +), one of which he broke about 4 tackles and carried 3 guys on his back for 15 yards into the endzone, 1 from Joe Lynch , and 1 from Nick Gambacini. After the 1st quarter the defense led by linebacker James Nelson stepped it up and settled in and held strong. Nelson made a huge hit on the Greyhounds star runningback which took him out of the game and may have been the key to the Eagles defensive success. The road going into the stadium is called Victory Way and after the game Coach Gambo told the kids "We came in on Victory Way and Were goin out on it VICTORIOUS!"The boys are extremly tired from playing out in the 85 degree sun after being used to the sub-zero temperatures back home for the last few weeks and decided to just chill around the pool for the night. The Eagles will play The West Valley Falcons out of California on Friday for the National Championship at 1:00p.m. Games results will be posted. Tomorrow is Magic Kingdom Day for the boys.  WISH YOU ALL WERE HERE. =]

Eagles On their Way to Disney World For National Championship!

WOLCOTT

JR. MIDGET FOOTBALL PLAYERS
ARE DISNEY BOUND!

Photobucket

On Saturday the Jr. Midget football team (12-0) met up at the Wolcott Sports Complex for yet another game as every other Division II JR. Midget Football team in New England besides their opponent the Sharon Eagles from Mass. Were sitting on their butts at home wishing they could have another week of football. The team drove up to Worcester Mass in a convoy of tagged up cars ready to take home a regional championship. Coach Bobby told all the boys “ We have been waiting for this day since July 28th and Boys it is finally Here.” Once we made the Playoffs each week we would count down the games left until we will be in Disney World. First it was 5 more games as we faced The New Milford Bulls for the League Semifinal, then it was 4 more games as we faced Brookfield for the league championship, then it was 3 more games as we faced Shelton for the State Championship, then it was 2 more games as we faced Amherst for the Regional Semi’s and boys here it is your final shot. You have one more game and you will be on your was to the national championship. Lets not end our journey here, we have come way too far. We win today and we’ll be playing in the warmth next week boys. The boys came out and received the ball first. They drove right down the field, but due to penalties and mistakes turned the ball over. The defense came out strong and pounded Sharon the first series sending them 3 and out. From this point on our offense lead by quarterback Brett Lanzara and running back Joe Lynch who each had the game of a lifetime, began to play good old fashioned Wolcott Football and pounded the ball down their throats. Lanzara had his best offensive game all season, rushing for 2 touchdowns and passing for one touchdown and 3 extra points. Joe Lynch ran for 150 yards and caught the eagles passing touchdown. Running Back Anthony Ortiz rushed for 2 scores and powerhouse fullback Nick Gambacini rushed for one. But these guys would have nothing without their offensive line who played hard all game and physically beat up their opponents. The defense led by James Nelson, Zack Bruska, and Brandon Walker played very strong not allowing Sharon to drive the ball at all seeing each of their scores were on broken plays on down and distance plays. Wolcott Won by a score of 40-24 and will now advance to the National Championship in the Wide World Of Sports Complex in Disney World Florida. They Leave on Sunday 12/7 and will return on Saturday 12/13. Their first game will be Tuesday 12/9 for the Semifinal Game. If the Eagles win, they will play for the National Championship on Friday 12/12. GOOD LUCK BOYS

Sunday, November 23
JR. Midget New England Regional Semi-final on 11/23

The Wolcott Jr.Midgets (11-0)

come out with a BIG WIN over the Amherst Patriots

In Regional Semi-Final!

Knowing they only had 2 games left to win to accomplish the teams main goal of making it to the National Championship in Disney World Florida the Eagles woke up early Sunday morning in the bitter cold to meet at the Wolcott Sports Complex where they had a nice breakfast made by their coaches and became mentaly prepared for the big game. They jumped on the coach bus and took at 2.5 hour drive to Cranston Rhode Island to play the Amherst Eagles in the New England Reagional semi-final. The boys were fired up and ready to go. Head Coach Bobby Fernandez told them that they would need to bring their "A" game and play right from the beggining if they wanted another week of football. The boys blocked out the bitter cold weather with the thought of warmth and sunshine just a few weeks away if they won this game. The eagles won the toss and would start out the game on offense. The Patriots kicked off to the eagles and just 2 plays later once again unbelievable runningback Anthony Ortiz took it to the house putting the eagles up   7-0. The eagles came out strong on deffense bringing up a 4th and very long for the Patriots where the eagles then blocked the punt. The eagles had a few mistakes on the frist 3 plays of their second drive putting them in a 4th down situation. The eagles went for it on 4th and 15 and Ortiz with the help of excellent blocking took it for a 25 yard run to get the first down which lead to another Eagle touchdown. From this point on the Eagles took control of the game only letting up 1 first down to the Patriots and Scoring 25 more points on offense. Touchdowns were scored by a variety of people 2 by Ortiz, 2 for Joe Lynch, 1 by Nicholas Gambacini, and 1 by Danny Catania. The strong Eagle deffense went back to their old ways putting up their 9th goose egg of their 11 game schedule not letting up a single point on deffense. Their excellent deffensive performance was lead by linebacker James Nelson, Saftey Brett Lanzara, linebacker Brian Nadeau, linebacker Anthony Ortiz, and an equally great performance by the rest of the deffense. By half time the Eagles had already exceeded the mercy rule and had a running clock for the whole second half. Their excellent first half performance allowed EVERYONE get alot of playing time and have fun with it. CONGRATULATIONS BOYS On THE HUGE WIN. The Eagles will match up against the Sharon Eagles from HockMock League out of Massachusettes For the New England Regional Championship Next Saturday At Holy Cross College in Mass. If the Eagles win they will be packing their bags for the National Championship in Disney World Florida and would leave on Sunday Dec. 7.

2008 CT Football State Championships on 11/15

Wolcott PeeWee's (9-1) fall short in Final Seconds

Of State Championship

After falling short one year ago in the Western Ct Championship Coach Ron Gambino knew it was a huge win to take home the title in 2008 and was determined to bring home a state championship to Wolcott . He had seen his new opponent the Farfield Giants play before and knew this game would not be an easy one. He and his other coaches were confident though because just 2 years ago they overcame the same situation taking a team to the national championship. The game started out rough and the eagles came out flat letting up 2 quick touchdowns on deffense and having trouble on the offensive side of the ball. They went into half down by a score of 14-0. During their half time meeting thier coaches said to never put your head down and keep playing tough "REMEMBER WERE A 2nd HALF FOOTBAL TEAM!" And the eagles proved it so. They came out strong and stopped the giants on deffense holding them to minimal yards. The offense came out with avengance and ready to score. Scoring thier first touchdown on yet another beautiful pass from Gambino to Matt Rinaldi making the score 14-6. Later in the game the eagles drove down the field and scored on a rushing touchdown ran by JJ Matos. The score was now 14-12 and the eagles had no other choice but to go for 2. The game was in the hands of the Kicker JJ Matos. Everyone was on the edge of their seat there was a Beautiful snap, beautiful hold,.... and A BEAUTIFUL KICK. Making the score 14-14! The Giants got the ball back with little time in the fourth and the eagles held their own. Then it was 4th and long with only 2 minutes left and the Giants threw up a nice pass where corner Matt Rinaldi made a beautiful play swatted the ball but unfortunatly the reciever was in the right spot at the right time and caught it off the tip. The giants continued down the field and scored with 21 seconds left resulting in a final score of 20-14. Great Season Boys.

Wolcott Jr. Midgets Take Home Another Title

2008 CT STATE CHAMPIONS!

After watching one of the most exiting games in football and seeing his Uncle's peewee team fall just short of a state championship, Coach Bobby Fernandez and his Jr. Midget football players (10-0) knew they now had a lot of pressure to make sure we brought a trophy home to Wolcott and would need to step up their game. The boys came out more pumped up than they had all season. They were phyced and ready to play. If you like high scoring, very offensive type of football games, then this was a game you would  have loved to see. Just 2 plays after the eagles recieved the opening kick off, outstanding tailback Anthony Ortiz ran a 55 yard touchdown on simple power play. The way the boys came out on offense everyone knew our offense would not be stopped. Unexpectedly Shelton came right back and followed up with a touchdown of their own, except they made the 2 pt conversion putting them up 8-7. The offenses went back and forth matching eachother if one scored the other scored if one turned it over the other turned it over. The only thing that was killing Wolcott was that Shelton was getting 2 pt conversions and they were getting 1. Late in the 2nd quarter Shelton was winning by a score of 22-20. Ortiz  scored the other 2 touchdowns in the first half. The Eagles went into the half down 2 points, which was a very new thing to them seeing they only let up 8 points all year and had never been losing before. Coach told them the key to winning this game was to step it up on deffense and make a few stops because our offense is unstoppable right now, seeing we only ran roughly 10 plays in the first half and scored 3 times. So the Eagles came out with avengance knowing that this game meant everything to them and if they wanted another week of football they needed to win. The Eagles had to kick off to Shelton to start the half and the Tigers deep man broke one loose putting the Eagles down 10 points with a score of 30-20. From that point on the Eagles became a whole different deffensive team and did not let up another point. Wolcott return man Joe Lynch fired back by taking a kick off to the house to make the score 27-30. The Eagle offense more fired up then ever also fought back with 2 more rushing touchdowns yet another by Anthony Ortiz and one from 85lb Chris Petillo to put the eagles up by a breathable amount. The Eagle deffense also put some points on the board with a huge 6 pt interception by Nick Gambacini. The Eagles Came out with a huge victory and never gave up when down and continued to play hard. The Eagles ended up scoring 34 unanswered points in the second half making the final score 54-30. Congradulations BOYS! Good Luck In Your Regional Semifinal in Rhode Island on 11/23

Lead by quarterback Vincent Gambino the eagle offense scored 20 points. The eagles drove down the field and running back JJ Matos scored a rushing touchdown to put the eagles up 6-0. Later in the game Gambino threw an excellent pass to reciever Matt Rinaldi which brought the ball down to the 3 yard line. Following up his twin brothers excellent catch, running back Nick Rinaldi powered in the remaining 3 yards on a rushing touchdown. The final touchdown was scored by Q.B Vincent Gambino on a Q.B boot to the corner of the endzone. Congratulations BOYS!

Wolcott Jr. Midget Follows up PeeWee's

Bringing Home a 2nd Western Ct Title To Wolcott

After watching his Uncle Ronny win yet another league championship 25 year old Head Coach Bobby Fernandez knew it was up to him to bring another trophy home to Wolcott. Our Jr. Midget football team (9-0) was playing the Brookfield Bobcats, which earlier in the season  the eagles only beat 6-0 in a very hard fought battle. Going into this game the eagles had yet to let up a single touchdown the entire season! The game started out as a dog fight both deffenses came out strong and went back and forth until the eagles scored going up by a score of 8-0. As the game went on the Eagles continued to fight hard and continued to hold on deffense and drive the ball on offense. The Eagles ended up scoring 25pts but in the 4th quarter broke their 8 game streak of not letting up a single point and allowed the Bobcats to score a touchdown making the final score 25-8. Congratulations Boys!
