What is Fast Pitch Softball?
Fast pitch softball is a growing sport. It is the type of softball that most girls play in High School and College.
What is the difference between Fast Pitch and Slow Pitch softball?
Fast pitch is more competitive than slow pitch. It is played with an 11” or 12” ball but the ball is pitched at a much faster speed. Many of the rules are different. Fast pitch is played more like baseball. For example, stealing bases is part of the game.
Who should play Fast Pitch?
Fast pitch is more competitive than slow pitch. Girls who are planning to play in high school and are more serious about the game are encouraged to play.
How do I know if I want to play Fast Pitch?
If you are a strong slow pitch player and want to continue to play through high school, you should consider playing fast pitch. If you are not sure if you will like it, we would encourage you to consider playing in the fall league. The fall league is less competitive and more instructional. You will have the opportunity to try it out better in the fall than in the spring.
Can I play both Fast Pitch and Slow Pitch?
You are permitted to play both if you want but it is not recommended. The commitment to play fast pitch will require approximately 3 to 4 times a week on average between practice and games. While our league can control, to some extent, the home games not conflicting with slow pitch, we will have no control of the away games. You may have to choose between them.
Where will I play if I sign up for Fast Pitch?
Fast pitch is a traveling league. Some games will be played at home in our borough and most away games will be played in the general Pittsburgh vicinity.
Why is Fast Pitch more expensive than Slow Pitch?
There are two major reasons. 1. Equipment for fast pitch is more expensive. Each team must have full catchers gear (shin pads, facemasks with neck gear). 2. Umpire fees could be as much as $60 per game.
What kind of uniform will I receive for Fast Pitch?
Each player will receive a “T” shirt and socks just like slow pitch.
How will the team be selected?
The number of teams we will have in each division is dependent on the number of managers that sign up. Each fast pitch team will have no more than 12 girls on a team. 10 girls play in the 10U group and 9 girls play in the 12U and up groups. As this is a new venture for our league and we want the slow pitch league to remain our primary focus, we will limit the number of teams so as not to diminish the slow pitch league. Selection of teams will depend on the number of girls that want to play fast pitch and the number of managers that sign up. There may be try outs or they may be selected based on their current slow pitch rating. Once sign ups are complete, the specifics of selection will be determined. They may vary per age group based on the interest.
What if I don’t make the team?
Teams will be picked before the slow pitch draft. Any player who does not make the fast pitch team can move to slow pitch or request a refund.
When does the season start?
10 & under and 12 & under – April 10 to June 16
15 & under - May 1 to July 7
18 & under – May 15 to July 14

We are always looking for help in running the softball league. We all have great ideas and this would be a great way to put them to use. If you are interested or know anyone that would be interested in participating in the planning and functions associated with the Girl’s league please email the organization at wjhsoftball@comcast.net and someone will contact you. Your willingness to participate will be appreciated by all, mostly the girls!
