Buffalo News Article Jan. 17 2006-Featuring Varsity's Kyle Smith
HOCKEY
Players come with pedigrees

Smith, Playfair, Brownschidle enjoy watching their sons

By JOHN VOGL
News Sports Reporter
1/17/2006
They're just normal dads now, sitting in the stands at high school hockey games to watch their boys play. But they bring more to the rink than most parents, namely the knowledge and history that comes from being a professional hockey player.

Jack Brownschidle, Larry Playfair and Derek Smith were NHL fixtures in the late 1970s to mid-'80s, skating with and for Hall of Famers. They're spending many of these days and nights watching their sons play in the Western New York Varsity Hockey Federation.

"It's always fun to watch when you know somebody playing, and when they're your own kids it's that much better," said Brownschidle, whose sons Matt and John skate for Canisius High School.

Playfair's son Michael is an assistant captain at St. Joe's, while Smith's son Kyle is the third member of the family to take the ice for Williamsville East.

"They're three of the biggest hockey fans in Buffalo as far as current guys, so they're like I was when I was young, which is neat to see," said Derek Smith, who played parts of seven seasons with the Buffalo Sabres and two with Detroit. "But they don't remember our era."

Other than their pedigree, that's another thing the high school players have in common. None was around when their fathers were playing. But all started skating around age 5, and their fathers were influential in getting them on the ice.

"It's definitely nice to have somebody like that who's always there to help you," said Matt Brownschidle, a senior center. "Obviously, he knows what he's doing because he did play in the NHL."

"Just because he's played in the NHL he has a lot of experience teaching me different things," added Kyle Smith, a junior left winger. "That probably gave me a little more advantage over other kids."

Brownschidle and Playfair were assistant coaches on their childrens' teams while they were growing up, and Smith also chipped in. Having their background helped get the kids' attention.

"I think it's probably made it easier helping coach, not just with my own kids but probably with all the kids, really," said Jack Brownschidle, a Buffalo native who played seven seasons with the St. Louis Blues and parts of three with the Hartford Whalers. "Anyone that's played in the NHL, I think kids are going to show them a little more respect for what they say because of the level they achieved. I think they tend to listen more closely."

"It's nice because he can tell us what we're doing right and wrong after the games," said John Brownschidle, who last month became the first Canisius freshman to score a hat trick in recent memory. "It's something to live up to when we're older, that our father was in the NHL."

When it comes to the high school teams, you're not likely to find a stick in the fathers' hands. It'll be a coffee. They are very content to stay off the ice and watch, unless a coach asks them for help.

"The parents have never asked me anything. Actually, it's flipped around," said Canisius coach Terry Miller, who has his own NHL ties as a brother to Los Angeles Kings defenseman Aaron Miller. "Sometimes I'll go, "Do you see something?' But they've never come to me and said, "Try this, do this.' "

"Pete Schneider's record speaks for itself," Larry Playfair said of the longtime St. Joe's coach. "He doesn't necessarily need me telling him what I think he should do."

Playfair is likely the most known of the group, having played defense for the Sabres for parts of 10 seasons and with L.A. for another four, and he's the head of the Buffalo Sabres Alumni Association. Michael Playfair is more likely than the others to have another parent quiz him about his lineage, although the background of all the kids can get known in the rinks.

"I'm pretty much just another guy out there," said Michael Playfair, a 6-foot-3 senior forward who wants to play junior hockey next season. "Occasionally you'll get an extra look because of your name, but I don't try to use it to my advantage."

"Some people know who Michael is and might razz him a bit about his old man, but I think for the most part it's been non-eventful," said Playfair, who, like every parent at the rink whether they were in the NHL or not, hopes his advice has helped. "You'd like to think that you make a difference."

Despite the disadvantages East only allowed 15 shots in the first 2 periods while not allowing 1 shot on goal during one of the 5 on 3 situations. The teams played only about 6 minutes the entire game 5 on 5.  Ryan Caudill off assists from Peter Bouris and Bryan Shorthouse scored at 7:41 of the 3rd period to close the score to 2-1 but Lancaster scored just 22 seconds later to clinch the win. Bouris's determined rush down the right side was the key to the goal.
