EAST VARSITY STATE CHAMPIONS !!!!!!!
Alex Durinka wristed in a shot from 13' out at 2:23 of sudden death overtime to give East a 3-2 victory over Salmon River and most importantly the Div.II NYSPHSAA Ice Hockey Championship. East's Anthony Clair opened the scoring at 11:44 of the first period as fired in a rebound after a shot by Mike Calzi. East controlled play for the majority of the period and outshot Salmon River 15-5. In the second period,Salmon River came out aggressively and took the play to East with a physical attack. It paid off at 2:02 when Salmon River tied the score. Matt McGlone put East back on top at 11:17 of the period with Jason Tartick and Durinka earning the assists. Salmon River outshot East 13-7 in the second period. Once again a desperate Salmon River team started out strong in the final period and tied the score at 2-2 after 2:03 of play. East regained the momentum at the 5 minute mark and finished the period with several excellant scoring chances including a shot off the post with 2 1/2 minutes left in regulation. East had a 10-5 shot advantage in the third. In the sudden death overtime period, East continued with their determined effort and it paid off at 2:23 when Durinka netted the game winner.
