Greg Basthemer came up big for the Bulldogs keeping a good Sussex offense at bay and pitched a complete game for the win. Basthemer gave up 3 runs on 9 hits while striking out 2 and walking just 1. Scott Booth led Brookfield at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a HBP, a stolen base and an RBI. Jeff Lueck called a great game behind the plate and finished 2-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and an RBI. Kris Franzen was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Bill Gorman was 2-for-4 with a sacrifice bunt. Mike Jacobs was 1-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt. Josh Lemke was 1-for-4. Andy Monigal finished with a walk, a HBP and 2 stolen bases. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Jason Rutz led off with a HBP and advanced to 3rd base on a bunt hit by Franzen down the 3rd baseline. Scott Booth singled driving in Rutz and then stole 2nd base. Lueck followed by driving in Franzen with a single. Leading 2-1 after 4 innings, the Bulldogs struck for 2 more runs in the top of the 5th inning. Lueck led off with a double off the wall and advanced to 3rd base on a bunt by Gorman. Monigal was hit by a pitch and then stole 2nd base while Lueck tore off for home and knocked the ball out of Sussex catcher Scott Carberry's glove for a successful steal of home. Sussex would make the score 4-3 with 2 runs in the 7th inning, but Basthemer shut down the Cardinals for the final two innings. Brookfield is still trying to get their offense back into Championship form after stranding 12 baserunners in the win. Up next for the Bulldogs is their home opener against Merton at McCoy Field Sunday at 1 pm.
