Coach's Code of Conduct
West Hartford Youth Basketball League (WHYBL)
Coaches Game Code of Conduct

The WHYBL recognizes that the conduct of coaches once they enter the game site is an important part of the completion of the mission of the organization. That is, to instill in youth the principles of good citizenship, good sportsmanship, and teamwork. To that end, all coaches in the WHYBL are required to adhere to the following Game Code of Conduct.

1)        Once you have reached the game site, you are a representative of the WHYBL and must conduct yourself in an appropriate manner recognizing your importance as a role model and example to youth and adults.

2)        You may not disparage in either word or action any player, parent, referee, custodian, scorekeeper, or representative of the WHYBL.

3)        It is the coach’s responsibility to assure that their team also behaves in a similar manner.

To these ends, every coach must take steps to assure that the following actions are taken at the game site:

1)        Every coach must, prior to the beginning of each game, shake hands with the opposing coach at which time any particular game exceptions should be presented or discussed.

2)        Teams must take the bench opposite of the basket at which they are warming up.

3)        No more than three adults may be on the bench sitting with the team. If so directed by the referee only one adult may stand at a time during the game.

4)        The entire bench must refrain from shouting criticisms at any player, referee or scorekeeper at any point in the game.

5)        Coaches will be responsible for assisting any WHYBL officials with controlling an unruly crowd if so designated by the referee.

6)        Coaches must make sure that there is a post game handshake and that all team members participate.

7)        It is the winning coach’s responsibility to keep a game score from embarrassing any team. If you believe a game score may be out of hand, please speak to the opposing coach about how to handle that particular game.
