Who's Buyin'?: Welcome

Sunday, March 1
W.B. makes strong showing at North Invite but cannot come up with wins

The wins never did materialize after game 1 on Saturday for Who's Buyin'?, though the team certainly played well enough to place much higher in the final tally.  A .528 team batting average, and 7 of 11 guys over .500 from the plate on the day usually lends itself toward a pretty solid day for W.B., especially with the team defense that we usually bring.  Unfortunately, very soft outfields and some early-morning mud limited the effectivity of the defense for all teams involved, and made it much more of a hitter's game.  Even though the team lost 3 of their 4 games, they did so by a combined deficit of only 10 runs, or less than 3.5 runs/game, meaning every victory was within reach.  Some days it just doesn't work out the way it should.

Huge thanks to Jeff Postetter and Steve Saari for coming out.  Jeff's range and arm in the outfield, and (after some early-day timing issues) strong bat at the plate proved a true difference-maker throughout the day.  The entire outfield, in fact, did a great job despite slow, soggy conditions that resulted from heavy rain throughout the week leading up to this tournament.  Except for a few balls that got lost in the early-spring sunshine, there were very few missed opportunities out there.  And of course, we don't really have an "every week" pitcher this season, so anytime we can get an old friend like Steve to come out and chuck the rock every game, it's a huge calming presence for everyone in the field.  We certainly hope both Jeff and Steve will make it out several more times this season, as their schedules allow.

Spring league for W.B. begins in 10 days, on Wednesday, March 11.  No schedule has been released yet, but I expect it to be available within the next 4-5 days at the most.  The next tournament action W.B. will see will be Sunday, March 29 at Celebration Park down in Federal Way for a 5-game guaranteed Rec. tournament.  After this weekend's efforts, I feel very encouraged about our outlook for the season -- I don't think there are many teams out there at the E/Rec. level that we can't beat.  Thanks to all that came out to play in the gorgeous February sunshine...
