CONGRATULATIONS WLL SENIORS -- DISTRICT 56 CHAMPIONS
Senior's Championship Game: Tues. 7/7/09 WLL vs. Golden Hill
Veterans Park in Yorba Linda was the site for a winner-take-all match in the Senior Division of the District 56 All Star Tournament between Golden Hill and Whittier Little Leagues. The game got off to a fast start for Whittier when lead-off batter Andrew Alvarez began the bottom half of the first with a solo homerun. Whittier's pitcher, Fernando Pinedo, would maintain the lead until the 3rd inning when they allowed Golden Hill's potent offense to get on the board with a single run. Whittier would respond quickly in their bottom half of the inning thanks to a 1 out double by Fernando Pinedo, who would later score thanks to a RBI single by Daniel Sanchez. Whittier would manufacture another run in the bottom half of the 5th inning thanks to a single by Pinedo, who would go on to score thanks to a couple of sacrifices by Matt Mendez and Sanchez. With Whittier leading 3-1 heading into the top half of the 6th, Golden Hill's offense went to work by plating two runs with timely hitting and a pair of errors from the Whittier defense. With the score tied at three in the bottom half of the sixth inning, Golden Hill sent Whittier's first two batters down via ground ball outs. The 3rd batter in the inning, Ryan Gallegos, would manage to work the count full before delivering a crushing blow to Golden Hill in the form of a solo home run, Whittier's second on the day. Now with the lead 4-3, Whittier's closing pitcher, Frank Lopez, would go on to close out the game and take home the District 56 Senior Division All Star Tournament Championship!

All Star Game Highlights 2009 All Star Game Highlights Major 12's game 6/Championship Game: Wed. 7/8/09 WLL vs. Golden HillWay back on June 8th, the seven managers from Whittier's Major Division got together and selected 13 players out of a group of 84 players in our division. The managers felt that these 13 young men would be the best representatives of Whittier Little League on and off the field. The selections of these managers would not disappoint. Once the selection of these 13 young men were revealed to the rest of the league at the closing ceremonies, these 13 young men found out quickly what the expectations of this team were...win the District 56 Championship! Many would say that should be the goal every year. But if you were to take a closer look at Whittier's history, you would see that no team from Whittier had even been to the championship game, much less won it all, since 1994; a staggering 15 years ago. To put that into perspective, none of these players were even a twinkle in their parents’ eyes 15 years ago. Despite that thought, this was the challenge that the players embraced. As our All Stars battled their way through the tournament, they never seemed satisfied with their play -- always wanting to perform at a higher standard in order to reach the next level. On Wednesday night, Whittier would put it all on the line for a second time against Golden Hill. Although our young men would fall short of obtaining their goal of winning the championship, as they would fall to Golden Hill by a score of 4-0, no one could possibly say that it was for lack of effort. Even when they were down to their last 3-outs, they would not go quietly, as every member of the team was up cheering for each of their teammates shouting words of encouragement. But this time, on this night, Golden Hill was just a little better than our young men. Hopefully, each and every one of them will be able to remember this experience as they enter their teenage years. Hopefully, they will remember that when goals are set and hard work and efforts are placed into the task at hand, they can achieve the loftiest of goals. If you see any of these coaches or players in the off-season, I hope you will stop them for a second and congratulate them on an amazing season; and thank them for putting Whittier Little League at the top of the pack in Little League District 56; and most importantly thank them for allowing us, as parents and fans, to fall in love with the game of baseball all over again. Thank you, gentlemen, each and every one of you!
Manager: John Hughes #24 Randy Alvarez #13 Alfred Casillas #7 Kyle Chadick Coach: Fernando Pinedo #3 Andres Flores #6 Alex Gonzalez #48 Cooper Hughes Coach: Jim Chadick #25 Jerald Johnston #11 Luis Murillo #00 Jesse Perdomo #99 Ruben Pinedo #10 Kade Ramirez #Liam Soto #9 Joey Zeronis Major 12's game 5: Tues. 7/7/09 WLL vs. East Yorba Linda In a rematch of a game that went down to the very last pitch, Whittier (fresh off their loss to Golden Hill) was set to take on the very talented team from East Yorba Linda for the second time in a span of five days. Whittier got things going from the opening pitch as Ruben Pinedo led off the game with a single; however, unable to string any hits together against EYL Whittier, he would eventually be stranded on the bases. Whittier would send an emotionally charged, Jerald Johnston, to the bump in search of some magic. Jerald would not disappoint as he started off the game by striking out the first three batters he faced. Whittier would threaten again in the top of the 2nd with a lead-off double by Joey Zeronis. But again Whittier's offense sputtered against EYL, and would go on to leave Joey stranded. Jerald hit a road bump of sorts, when facing the lead-off batter for EYL, as he would allow his only run of the game on a solo shot to left field. Whittier (as they have done all tournament) would answer quickly with a solo shot of their own off the bat of Ruben Pinedo (his 2nd of the tournament), an opposite field blast to right field to even the score at one a piece. The score would remain the same through the 5th inning thanks to steady defense and great pitching by both teams. Whittier would strike hard and fast in the top half of the sixth thanks to the power hitting of Jesse Perdomo, as he would connect for his 3rd homer of the tournament, a solo shot to dead center to give Whittier a 2-1 lead heading to the bottom half of the sixth. As expected EYL would not go quietly, they would lead off the inning with a bunt single down the 1st base line. The runner would later reach second on a passed ball. Jerald would get the next batter to fly out to center field for a great catch by Kyle Chadick, not allowing the runner to advance. The next batter would sharply hit a ground ball to Ruben at short stop, who would check the runner at second before throwing late to Joey at first in an attempt to get the batter. Joey seeing the runner from second breaking for third, threw a bullet to 3rd baseman Alex Gonzalez who slapped the tag on the runner for the 2nd out of the inning. With a runner on 1st and two outs, Jerald would induce another ground ball to Ruben for the final out of the game; a game which saw Jerald throw a complete six innings while allowing only three hits and striking out eight. From the first pitch to the last, Jerald led his team with confidence and poise while keeping a potent EYL offense off-balance all evening long. A truly dominant performance, when his team needed it most.
Major 12's game 4: Sun. 7/5/09 WLL vs. Golden Hill To say that Golden Hill was the favorite coming into the District 56 All Star Tournament would be a gross understatement at best. After all, Golden Hill is the 2-time defending 11-year old All-Star Tournament Champions. To take that a step further, prior to Sunday, they had played 3 games in the tournament and had won each of those games by 10 runs or more while failing to play a full six innings in any of them. Whittier sent Kyle Chadick to the mound in search of a dominant performance. Kyle struggled with his control from the opening pitch, walking the second batter. He would then induce a ground ball before giving up back-to-back singles to allow Golden Hill to take an early 1-0 lead. Kyle would go on to find his control and finish the inning with a huge strikeout avoiding further damage in the inning. Whittier, refusing to roll over for the favorites, would battle back in the bottom half of the inning. Following a ground out by Ruben Pinedo, Liam Soto got Whittier started with a 4-pitch walk. Following Liam would be Jesse Perdomo. Jesse would go onto "crush" a 45-foot single down the 3rd base line, forcing the 3rd basemen to charge and throw on the run in an attempt to make a great play on the speedy Perdomo. The throw from the 3rd baseman would be off-line allowing Liam to score from first on the play. At the end of the first, the score was tied 1-1. Golden Hill would come right back and score 2 more runs off of Kyle to take a 3-1 lead. The score would remain the same until the bottom half of the 6th inning as Kyle would go on to find his rhythm and turn in the dominant performance that the coaching staff was looking for, completely shutting-down the potent offense from Golden Hill from the 2nd inning on. In the bottom half of the 6th, Whittier would get things started with a single from Luis Murillo. Luis would take 2nd base on a fielder's choice off the bat of Alfred Casillas. Kyle would single to give Whittier runners on the corners with 1 out and down by 2. Andres Flores would follow Kyle with a ground ball for a fielder's choice, which would plate Luis and pull Whittier within a single run. Down to their last out and the tying run on second base, Whittier was unable to come up with any magic as the final out was recorded with a ground ball to the first baseman. A fitting end to a game that found Whittier hitting balls solidly all over the field, yet right at fielders all day long. Although Whittier was unable to come up with the victory on the field today, they are far from done in the tournament. With the loss to Golden Hill, the boys from Whittier learned a lot about themselves and their teammates; most importantly, the fact that they are just as good, if not better, than any team they step on the field with. An important lesson to be learned on the road to greatness.Major 12's game 3: Thurs. 7/2/09 WLL vs. East Yorba Linda This game has been circled on the coaches’ brackets since the brackets were released. The possibility of a rematch for Whittier against the team that has knocked this group of boys out of the tournament two years running is enticing enough. But a chance to do it while catapulting the team into the semi-final round brought a whole new level of intensity to the game. The game started with Whittier giving the ball to their ace, Ruben Pinedo. Ruben struggled with his control from the outset of the contest. Despite striking out the first batter of the game, Ruben then gave up a triple down the right field line. The runner would later score on a pitch in the dirt that Kade Ramirez was unable to coral. Heading into the bottom of the 2nd inning, Whittier found themselves down 1-0. Whittier would tie the game thanks to a RBI single from Kade that would score Liam Soto who was pinch running for Joey Zeronis. At the end of the 2nd inning, the score was tied 1-1. Ruben would struggle again in the 3rd inning allowing a triple and a 2-run homer to allow EYL to take a 3-1 lead. Whittier would not go quietly. Liam got on with one of his three singles of the night which brought up Jesse Perdomo, who hit a ball so hard it still hasn't landed. With the score tied 3-3, Ruben would allow another run in the top half of the 4th to continue the see-saw battle of two worthy teams. Again Whittier would not cower under the pressure with key base hits from Ruben, Liam, Jesse, and Kyle, along with a sacrifice from Joey. Whittier erupted for 4-big runs to take a 7-4 lead at the end of 4 innings. EYL would scratch across a single run against Jerald Johnston, who relieved Ruben in the 5th, to narrow Whittier’s lead to 7-5. EYL was able to quiet Whittier’s offense in the bottom of the 5th to keep the deficit to 2 runs. With Jerald still on the bump, Whittier was a mere 3 outs away from avenging two years of frustration. The inning began with Jerald hitting the lead-off man. Not exactly the best way to close out a game. EYL would then get back-to-back singles to load the bases with nobody out. With the entire crowd standing with nervous tension, Whittier seemed destined to let the game slip out of their hands. Jerald was unable to ease the tension, as he hit the next batter, forcing another run across the plate cutting Whittier’s lead to a single run 7-6. With the bases loaded and still nobody out, Jerald now had no room for any mistakes. With the infield drawn in, Jerald was able to induce a much needed ground ball to 2nd basemen Jesse Perdomo, who quickly threw home to Kade Ramirez for the force out. Now with 1 out and the game still resting on Jerald’s shoulders, he again got a much needed ground ball, this time to 3rd basemen Alex Gonzalez, who again threw home to Kade for the force out. With 2outs, the bases still loaded, and only a single run separating the two teams, Whittier was a single out away from moving on in the tournament. Jerald quickly got ahead with two quick strikes. EYL now down to their final strike, Jerald would unleash his best pitch of the night, which froze the batter for a called strike three, clinching the win for Whittier and setting up an unbelievable Semi-Final against Golden Hill. Major 12's game 2: Sun. 6/28/09 WLL vs. West Fullerton Flying high from their mercy rule victory the day before over West Yorba Linda, the boys from Whittier came out sluggish to start the game against West Fullerton. Starting pitcher, Kyle Chadick, struggled with his control early on. He allowed two walks and a couple of singles which got WF on the board first. He then gave up a 2-run shot before recording the 3rd out of the inning. But Kyle's teammates would not go quietly. Ruben led off the bottom of the 1st with a solo shot to pull Whittier within 2. After the shaky start, Kyle settled into his groove and only allowed 2 more runs over his next 4-2/3 innings pitched. The Whittier offense began chipping away at the lead. Kade Ramirez came up with an RBI double in the 2nd to close the lead to just 4-2 at the end of the 2nd. Whittier would tie the score at 4 a piece in the 3rd thanks to singles by Liam Soto and Kyle Chadick, who would both score thanks to a 2-run double by Randy Alvarez. With the score tied 4-4 going into the bottom of the 4th, singles by Ruben Pinedo, Andres Flores, and Liam Soto would load the base with 2 outs for Joey Zeronis. Joey would continue his clutch hitting with a 2-run single. The next batter, Kyle Chadick, decided to one-up his buddy with a 2-run hit of his own, a double to right center field, to push Whittier's lead to 8-4 at the end of 4 innings. Whittier would add another insurance run in the 5th inning thanks to aggressive base running from Ruben Pinedo, as he scored from 2nd on a passed ball. Kyle was able to go 5-2/3 innings before turning the ball over to Jerald Johnston to get the final out. Final score Whittier 9 West Fullerton 5. Great game boys!Major 12's game 1: Sat. 6/27/09 WLL vs. West Yorba Linda With two weeks of preparation behind them, it was finally time to play ball! With high expectations for the tournament, the boys from Whittier did not disappoint the large crowd on hand. With Whittier as the home team, they took the opportunity to set the tone with their defense. With a runner on and 1 out, Ruben Pinedo struck out the batter for the second out and Copper Hughes, playing catcher, threw a bullet to second to shut down any hopes of West Yorba Linda striking first, a perfect strike 'em out, throw 'em out scenario. With discipline, patience, and key base hits from Jesse Perdomo and Jerald Johnston, Whittier jumped all over WYL's starting pitcher for an early 5-0 lead at the end of the first inning, thanks to 3 walks, 2 doubles, 1 hit-by-pitch and 2 sacrifices. WYL battled back in the 2nd inning with a 3-run home run off of Ruben. Unfazed by the HR, both Ruben and Andres Flores reached in the bottom half via walks. Jesse Perdomo stepped to the plate and decided to help out the team by getting the 3-runs back as he deposited a pitch off of the scoreboard in left centerfield for a 3-run shot of his own. At the end of 2nd inning, Whittier had the lead 8-3. The score remained the same until the 5th inning thanks to great pitching by Ruben (who struck out 7 batters and finished the game in just 69 pitches). Whittier went back to work in the bottom of the 5th scoring 4 more runs, coming by way of RBI doubles from both Luis Murillo and Alfred Casillas; singles, by both Kyle Chadick and Jesse Perdomo, a run scoring sacrifice by Alex Gonzalez, and a solo home run from Kade Ramirez. With the bases loaded and two-outs and Whittier 1-run shy of their first victory in the tournament, Luis Murillo came up with a walk-off single to plate the 5th run of the inning (His second hit of the inning), and clinch the victory for the boys from Whittier.
