Dear Friends,
We, the White Cross Board members, wanted to reach out to the community, all of our current users, and friends of the White Cross Recreation Center to let everyone know what recent events have been going on at the recreation center. It’s been a busy year for White Cross. There have been a number of activities that have occurred as well as some improvements to our Center that we want to let you know about. We also want to take this opportunity to invite you to be a part of White Cross. We are always looking for volunteers for various tasks that we just can’t seem to get around to doing.
This past summer we had our 14th annual White Cross Tractor Pull! We appreciate everyone coming out to support our main fundraiser and making it a huge success once again. A big THANK YOU goes to all that placed an AD in our sponsor book. PLEASE make our sponsors the source of all your business needs. We appreciate all of those that bring their tractors out for the event. Obviously, without you there would not be a pull. Also, we can’t forget the very entertaining kids pedal pull - now that’s real power! Over 70 kids had a blast participating in the kids pedal pull last year. We also want to send a special thank you to the volunteers that helped in the kitchen, made homemade desserts, helped out on the track and to the local fire departments for handling the parking. Special thanks to Jennifer Ray for making a ton of homemade chili! We are already planning for this year and hope to see you there. Please spread the word about one of the most entertaining annual events in the community. If you would like to volunteer for this years’ tractor pull, please Contact Terry Ward (919-883-7272)
Volleyball is one of our favorite seasons at White Cross (and participation is growing every year.) We had over 75 girls play in our league that was for ages 9 –14 this past season. White Cross had 5 senior level and 3 junior level teams that competed for regular season and tournament championships. We want to say thank you to all of our volunteer coaches this season. We would also like to thank Cedar Ridge High School Volleyball for donating volleyballs to our league. One of our volunteer coaches’ children played in an AAU travel tournament in Myrtle Beach a few weeks back and stated that he counted over 16 girls from White Cross competing there. That tells me there are serious volleyball athletes coming from WC. Please contact league commissioner David Elkins for any youth volleyball related questions.
We are now in the second half of our Basketball season at White Cross! WC has over 120 kids (Ages 4-14) playing this season. We have 12 teams total: 3 pee wee, 6 mites and 3 junior teams that are competing for a regular season and tournament championships. These kids are enjoying the big crowds that are attending the games and we want to say Thank You to all the volunteers that are helping to make everything run smoothly. Rumor has it that if you want a good hot dog and some exciting basketball, White Cross is the place to catch both! The schedule is on our website at: http://www.eteamz.com/WhiteCrossRecreationCenter/ We would like to thank all of our sponsors for this year. Please take note of them on the banners in the gym. Please contact league commissioner Warren Ray for any youth basketball related questions.
A special thank you goes out to all the volunteers for the recent fundraiser for Keith Stewart. We hear it was a huge success! If you still want to donate and haven’t had the opportunity, please contact Dana Ward.
With all of the activities going on at the Recreation Center, we also have needs. Over the last year, we have replaced two refrigerators and a freezer in the kitchen area. We are currently raising dollars for a new scoreboard that has finally run out of steam (after 35 years, we would say the old scoreboard did its job!) We are also raising money for a new gym floor that desperately needs to be replaced. The current gym floor has been there a very long time and is cracking/chipping in many areas. We are making progress in these areas, but with your assistance we can achieve the improvements a little faster. White Cross has raised/saved $10,000 to date, but we know it will take $45,000-$50,000 to replace these items. With your generous donation, we can continue to provide a safe and fun place for the children and community to engage in sports activities and fellowship.
If you are interested in helping with the continued success of the White Cross Recreation Center and all of the excitement it brings to our community, please make your checks payable to White Cross Recreation and mail to:
