This year's OBW was certainly one to remember. The phrase 'quart in to a pint pot' certainly rings true when one considers what the then Miss Libby & Miss Smith managed to arrange for the assembled masses. Many memories survive from another Marlborough experience (above and beyond the sense of communal grime), but chief amongst them was the one and only appearance of Inflatable Boxing. No one can remember individual victors - suffice to say, inflatable boxing was the winner.

Also in this year, the legend that was to become Colin's winning streak on the OBW raffle began. The beer went down very nicely, thank you, and the leather jacket fitted a treat. Rumours that two seperate books of Tickets were used, one book (that made it into the hat) for the Whales and one (that got lost) for the Sharks were quickly rebuffed by the Whales. Somehow, all of prizes ended up being won by Whales in an X-Files type mystery - the truth is out there!!!

Another stonking OBW (a high/low-light of which had to be Moz's corridor streak, much to the distress of a somewhat shocked Kate Parrish), another convincing Whales win. Everything seemed settled in the garden of Whaledom. Little did anyone know that this was to be the last year at the Marlborough, home to OBW for so long. That said, it wouldn't be an unwelcome move to many, particuarly Cath & Nige who, at literally the last minute before their arrival, had their room usurped by the thought to be non-attendee Malcolm Wells. Where would the nomadic Whales end up in 1997?

It was this year that the Whales assumed their new uniforms (thanks to the couture expertise of Messrs Hill & Hancock), and the already menacing ranks of Whales now assumed a decidedly Black hue, which was rewarded with another win.

Having left the warm, albeit moist, embrace of the Marlborough for pastures new, it was with a little trepidation that Colin led the OBW by the hand in to the previously unknown luxury of the Royal. To some this was too much - blasphemous, even - and a few die-hards continued to give their trade to the Marlborough. However, once such novelties as en suite rooms, carpets that didn't stick to your shoes and a breakfast lounge that didn't smell of panatella lights had sunk in, everyone was overjoyed with the migration. Huzzah for the Royal!

Another convincing win for the Whales - could anything come between the Black & Green and their annual victory?
