Mastering the Fundamentals
Fundamentals are the building blocks of a successful women's lacrosse program. By developing solid fundamentals right from the start, a lacrosse player's potential is without limits! It is important to master the following fundamental skills before moving into advance game situations:

Catching
Keep stick head/face open to the ball, make contact with the ball out in front of your (top-hand) shoulder, cushion the ball straight back to the (top-hand) shoulder BEFORE cradling.

Throwing
Turn shoulders to be in line with your target (back to front), bring stick head back beyond (top-hand) shoulder, step forward with the opposite foot, rotate torso forward towards your target, bring top-hand forward and aim for target, follow through with top and bottom hands finishing off the opposite side hip.

Ground Balls
Get low to the ground and bend your knees, brush your knuckles into the grass and push through the ball, immediately bring ball up into the "ready position" for an immediate pass or run.

Cradling
Keep your cradle simple and precise. A basic cradle moves the stick from the "ready position" to a turned position directly in front of the top-hand shoulder. The motion should feel like your stick is moving "out and back". Advance cradling should be taught after this easy skill is mastered. Cradling allows a player to safely maneuver the stick while running downfield and dodging by a defender.

Stick Protection
Keeping your stick opposite your defender. Use your shoulders to protect the stick head from your opponent's stick. Line shoulder up in a straight line with your opponent's stick on one end and your stick on the other end. In this position your opponent would literally have to check through your head in order to make contact... which is illegal.

Checking
Sharp, distinct, firm hits on your opponent's stick. Always keep your stick check under control and away from your opponent's body. The point of a stick check is to dislodge the ball from the opponent's stick. So, make sure you hustle to the ground ball after a successful stick check.

Fluid switching
ALL of the above should be mastered with both the right and left hands. Fluid switching of dominant to non-dominant hands is another very important basic skill to learn right from the start.

Ready Position
The "ready position" is when the stick head is facing forward with the ball off the top-hand shoulder. The top-hand should be 6 inches down from the stick head. The bottom hand should be all the way down the shaft grasping the butt-end. The top-hand elbow should be directly behind the stick head and not "locked" under the armpit. The "V" between the thumb and index finger on the top-hand should be at the back of the shaft. The stick should be resting on the top-hand shoulder at a 45 degree angle. From this position a player can immediately pass, shoot, dodge, cradle and run effectively with the ball.

Once these techniques are learned, a player is ready for the next level.
