U12 Boys Champions
U12 Boys win in style at Sherwood session one playoffs. The boys had a hard played win in round one where the score was tied and the team won 3-2 in pentaly kicks. Then they moved on to the power team in the division all session the EP Oceaneers team. The game was a great battle of two defensive teams. The Rabbid Squirrel's (WFFSC) got the first break when one of the WFFSC boys took a long shot and the Oceaners goalie misplayed the shot and it bounced over head and into the goal. That was all the team needed to win 1-0 and take the much deserved championship. The Fire Fighters team had not beaten either team during the season and were dominated by the Oceaneers until it really counted.

The girls, who competed in the U11 B division,  went 3-0 in the regular games and earned themselves a spot in the 4 team playoff.

In the semi-final game (one of the most exciting games I have ever watched), the girls fought all game long to a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation.  They then played two 5 minute “sudden-death” overtime periods, with no scoring.  Then came a five player shoot-out (penalty kicks), which, of course, after the first round, was tied!  It went to a sudden-death and …. the girls won and we were in the Championship!

We all jumped into our cars to head over to the new field and had just 15 minutes to get ready.  The girls were exhausted but played with terrific poise and determination.  We went down by one goal and then at the end of the first half, there was a very tough foul on Taylor who went down and injured her wrist (only a tough hit can bring her down).  Unfortunately, her wrist was bad enough that she was taken away by rescue (word is nothing is broken and we all wish her a speedy recovery).  At the start of the second half the girls were a little deflated and let a quick goal in (now down 0-2).  For the rest of the half, our girls were remarkable, fought hard against a physical team, had some shots on goal, but did not score.

Our girls finished 2nd place out of 14 teams!  In every game, our team had the fewest players.  With the exception of the first game, all games were played in 85+ degree heat in the blazing sun.  They fought through bumps, bruises, and sore ankles!

The U16 Boys team coached by David Kawatu, Mike Silvestri, and Jim Sullivan had a great run in the RI State Championship that determined who would represent RI in the USYS National Championship Tournament.

In the preliminary rounds, the team lost to Bruno 3-1 and beat Bayside 2-0 to make it into the semi-finals against South County. They beat South County with a 1-0 score to face Bruno again in the finals.

Bruno, as the defending champions, won 4-0 is a very hard-fought game that the final score does not quite reflect. It was 1-0 at half and for much of second half. The kids played their hearts out.

2010 WFFSC U15 Boys Win Prestigious Seaside Tournament Open Division
U15BoysSeaside2010
Seaside Champions
The U15 Boys team played in the difficult Open Division in the prestigious Seaside Tournament where they faced some extremely talented opposition. The first two games were against teams from South County and the result was one victory (3-0) and one tie. Then they played the U15 team from Blackwatch, a club designated as a premier club in Rhode Island. After a tough battle, WFFSC emerged victorious with a 1-0 victory.

This got the team into the Finals against another team from a premier club - East Hudson Academy in New York. The final score was 2-2 and then tiebreakers came into play since the tournament does not have overtime periods or do shootouts to determine a victor. Since WFFSC team had two shutouts to only one for East Hudson, WFFSC was crowned the champion.

This is a tremendous accomplishment for a town club such as WFFSC to go to such a high quality tournament with teams from premier clubs from around the Northeast and come away with the championship.

2010 U12 Boys team win quarter-finals game in RI Cup
From Coach Bill Cocroft:

The U12 boys battled against the Portsmouth Pirates. Early on in the game our starter goal keeper Rawson made a dive to make a great save and possibly broke his shoulder. We called on Liam Strain to step up during a zero to zero game. Liam proved he could be a relief goalie and maintain the shut out. The regulation game ended with a score tied at 0 to 0. We went into sudden death over time and again ended with a 0 to 0 tie . During the 2nd sudden death the action was fierce but again ends as a tie. The Fire Fighters moved to sudden death Penalty Kicks. Mason Cocroft, Nick Paolino and Jake Lima were successful with PK goals and ended a great match with a win of 3 PK goals to 2.

The team advanced to the semi final match at URI.

A tribute to 7 girls who played their guts out..

First match we were much smaller that the otheer team as a whole, in a physical game we brought a lot of grit, leading the match until 13 sec left in the match we allowed an equalizer and the result was a 4-4 tie. The Teamworks Tigers were tough, at times it looked as if we signed up foe a hockey tournement by accident...

Second Match, the girls brought it and convincingly defeated West Warwick, 8-3. "Kit Kat" and Mackenna were just too fast for our opponents in this match. Hailey began to show her toughness (and never let up for the rest of the day I maght add), here as a small player she was really a bull-dog in this match.

Third Match, I told them it was win or go home, we managed to scratch out a 3-2 victory over Coventry. goals were at a premium, Coventry had a very sure handed Keeper and WFF keeper Katrina stood on her head at times with a couple circus style saves keeping this nail-biter going down to the last second.

Tired and only having one sub all day, we played as smart as ever, passing was crisp and the solid defense of Katrina and Hannah, along with "Big Red" in goal put together a shut out and led us to a 3-0 victory over another coventry team. Trara stabalized our midfield as well allowing our little strikers to do some damage in the final as well.

All smiles at the end of the day and their faces were as red as their jerseys. A good time.

The trophies were presented to the team for being the U14B East runner ups for the first session at RI Indoor.  The girls only loss during the regular season was to Johnston and that is the team they lost to in the championship.  They had to play the championship game after wining their semi final game in a shootout over EG.  With few subs and no time to rest the girls were not able to pull off an upset against the undefeated Johnston team (no losses, but had one tie against us).  The girls were 6-1-1 during session 1.

2007 U14 Boys Win Father's Day tournament in history-making action
U14BoysNKFDC-2007
U14 Boys Win Championship!!

The U-14 Boys won the 2007 North Kingstown Father's Day Tournament in history making form.  The Team ended the regular 3 guaranteed game play with a 2-0-1 record.  WFFSC then had to wait for the results of another game (Ocean State vs. South County) before they knew they made the championship game.  The results of the Ocean State vs. South County game did not produce a winner for the division.  Instead WFFSC and Ocean State were in a knotted up tie through all five procedures used to determine the winner of the division (i.e. - (1) results of head-to-head competition; (2) most victories; (3) fewest losses; (4) least goals allowed; and (5) most goals scored with no more than a four goal differential spread allowed per game).  According to Tournament officials this has never before happened in the history of the Tournament.  The determining procedure came in the form of a best of 5 person shoot-out.  WFFSC needed just four opportunities to win the chance to play in the title game hitting 3 of 4 goals with Ocean State hitting only 1 of 4.  Chris Quinn had two amazing saves in those missed goals for Ocean State and the third sailed over the goal out of play.

Once in the championship game  WFFSC battled anothre team from South County and the winner of their Division to a 2 to 2 tie in regulation play.  After a ten minute overtime period the score was still 2 to 2.  The U-14 Boys then entered their second shoot-out of the day with again a best of 5 goal making opportunity.  This time it took 5 opportunities to seal the win for WFFSC making 3 of 5 attempts while giving up just 1 of 4 to South County.

WFFSC-U12-State-Champs
U12 Boys State Champs!!!

The U12 Boys team from WFFSC won the Rhode Island State Championship and will represent Rhode Island in the US Youth Soccer League National Championship Tournament. The national tournament is divided into four regions. Rhode Island champions play in Region 1 that comprises the Northeast including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and the New England states. The games for Region 1 will be played in Portland Maine the weekend of June 29-July 3. On Thursday, June 28th the team will participate in the parade of champions. They will play games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with possible playoffs on Monday and Tuesday.

This is a huge accomplishment for this team and WFFSC. This is the first town club boys team in RI to win a state championship in several years, being that typically the champions come from the premier clubs. This is a tribute to the players, the coaches, and WFFSC for being able to compete and win consistently at this level of competition.

The team won against Blackwatch 2-1 in an exciting final game to win the championship.

Congratulations to the players, their parents, and the coaches for this great success.

WFF beat Cumberland (9-0); Chariho (5-4); and Coventry (8-1) to earn a spot in a semi-final game. Fire Fighters were the only team to go undefeated up to the final game. The Fire Fighter team cumulatively outscored all other teams with 28 total goals while allowing only 9 goals. With less than 10 minutes to go in the final game WFF lead Coventry by a score of 3 to 1.  The WFFSC U12 Boys team coached by Joe Pacheco, John Crowley, and Doyle Byrd won in the premier division at the Holiday Tournament at Forekicks. Besides WFFSC, the teams included Blackwatch, Boston Bolts, and the Scorpions, all Rhode Island and Massachusetts premier teams. WFFSC first played Blackwatch and won 4-0. Then the team tied the Scorpions 1-1. The last game against the Bolts was won by WFFSC 3-0. The championship game was then played against the Scorpions. At halftime, WFFSC was behind 1-0. However, the final score was a 3-2 nailbiter for WFFSC. After all the outdoor tournaments and indoor tournaments plus going undefeated in two indoor leagues, the team's record is an incredible 27 wins, no losses, and one tie, with many of the wins against teams from premier clubs. 2006 U12A Boys win championship at Amherst Memorial Day Classic

U12 Boys Champs at Trophy Presentation  Finals Ceremonial Lineup  Team Picture
The U12A Boys team won in dramatic fashion the championship at the Amherst Memorial Day Classic Tournament. The team finished 1-2-0, loosing to two NH premier teams in close games, and only had a very slim chance of making the playoffs, needing a tie in the final game between two other teams in order to get into the playoffs. Well, good news was that things worked out and the team got into the playoffs. The bad news is that the team had to play one of the premier teams that they had previously lost to in a semi-final game and then if they won would have to face the other team, who had a bye and would be fresh for the final game. It was a hot, sunny day, which did not help.

The team came out fired up for the semi-final game and got a measure of revenge by beating the premier team 3-1 to make it to the finals. The team gave their all and the coaches were concerned that the kids may not have enough in the tank for the finals, especially in the heat and sun. The parents, who are a wonderful bunch, ensured that the players had sufficient water and ice for the games.

The kids played great in the final game. It was 1-0 at halftime and then we tied the score at about the midpoint of second half. The game ended with a 1-1 tie. There were then two 5-minute overtime periods with Golden Goal (sudden death) rules. No score happened during the overtime periods and the game went to penalty kicks.

The team was amazing with their penalty kicks. The other team as well shot a very high percentage. After the fourth round, it was tied 3-3. Then a very strange play occurred. Our player kicked the PK and the ball hit the top crossbar and went straight up in the air. The goalie, thinking that the ball had gone over and out of bounds, went running out of the goal box. The parents of the other team were cheering wildly, thinking that they had a chance to win the game on the next kick. However, the ball, after seeming to hang in the air forever, started coming down. The very experienced ref was watching the ball and had not yet blown the whistle. The ball hit about 6 feet in front of the goal. Could it be possible? Sure enough, the ball had spin on it and started rolling back towards the goal, just crossing the line with about 6 inches to spare. The ref called a goal and the cheers quickly went from the other team to ours. While our sympathies go to the goalie who did not finish the play, we were pleased to get the goal.

They then scored as well so after the required 5 PKs, it was tied 4-4. Then it went into overtime for the PK's. We would score and then they would score. Truly amazing how the kids handled the intense pressure. Finally after 7 rounds, our goalie made a great save and the championship belong to the kids who showed so much heart in beating two premier teams.

It was truly an amazing, storybook run to the championship.

2006 WFFSC U14 Girls Team Wins NK Father's Day Classic Championship
NKFDC-U14

Warwick Fire Fighters Girls U14 team wins championship at the North Kingstown Father’s Day Tournament.

The WFFSC girls won their second consecutive North Kingstown Father’s Day championship in grand fashion this weekend. Starting on Saturday, WFFSC kicked off the tourney by defeating two local rivals WSA (4-2) & CLCF (4-0) followed by an early Sunday morning victory over a Connecticut team, Rocky Hill SC (2-0). Once the round robin part of the tournament was finalized, WFFSC had taken the top seed with a 3-0 record and was set to face another Connecticut team, Glastonbury, for the championship.
The WFFSC girls set notice that the championship was theirs by scoring within the first 30 seconds. Once taking the lead they never looked back by scoring 3 more goals and finishing off Glastonbury 4-0. When the tournament had finished and the dust had settled the WFFSC girls had posted a perfect 4-0 record and outscored their opponents by a combined score of 14-2, with three shutouts, leaving no doubt that they were the 2006 Father’s Day champions.
This championship took on very special meaning for this team.  Earlier this year, the team lost its mentor and head coach of 6 years, Tom Williams. So, befittingly, on Fathers Day the WFFSC Girls and head coach Jim Sullivan raised their championship trophies proudly in memory of a great father and coach, Tom Williams.
