From Your President

Dear Parents, Players and Members of Westwood Little League,

As the MLB comes to a close, your Board of Directors is hard at work preparing our facility for the next season.  The 2010 season opens in only 6 months.  As in the past we hold registration in January and February and have try-outs/skills demonstration and pick teams in February.  Please keep this in mind and spread the word.  Every season we also have a few parents who do not think about baseball and softball until it is too late.  It is very hard to turn players away.  So for now look for email updates and school notices from us and look at our website, www.eteamz.com/westwoodll, for online registration dates and times.  We should have the dates set in the near future and I will post another note to you.

This fall we have made some significant improvements/replacements to some of our worst fences.  We have had the cement sidewalk that surrounds the concessions stand removed and replaced.  Also, the Buell softball field’s third base dugout has had some cement work done to encourage the water that drains off of Lions field to drain around the dugout.  The dugout floor has been skimmed and capped too.  We have approved the purchase of a tank-sprayer with a three point hitch that we will use to fertilize and condition the fields throughout the year.

We have had a volunteer step forward and offer to repaint the President’s wall on the Westside of the concessions stand building. We also have had a volunteer offer to coordinate our uniform purchase and assignment.  Others have volunteered to manage, coach and prepare our National Anthem recording for next season.

Presently we are in need of a couple of items, and we therefore are turning to our membership to ask for assistance, before we turn to our larger community.

1.       First we need someone with adequate experience to audit our books.  We have not had them audited for two or three years now.  It is good practice for a non-profit’s books to be audited on a periodic basis.

2.       Next we need someone with knowledge of cinder blocks to help rebuild the Buell dugout post.  This post holds up the roof, is now loose, and has been identified as a safety hazard.

3.       We need assistance with obtaining sponsorships.  Any help that you can offer would be greatly appreciated.  We need people to do simple tasks like delivering contracts and obtaining signatures and ordering field signs, and to do more challenging ones like making phone calls.

4.       We need volunteers to help with the following items:

a.       Baseball division directors

b.      Assistance with try-outs.  Set up, guide the kids, and tear down equipment.

c.       Contacting schools outside of KPS with information about our registration and sign-up.

5.       Lastly, last season more than a few people asked me about a recycling plan.  If this is going to happen, we need someone to champion this task at this time.  April 2010 is too late to start.  This involves coordination with our concessions person to purchase the right material.  (We do purchase some plastic items, lids, etc.).  Also contact needs to be made with the entity that picks up our waste to be recycled.  Lastly, and more importantly, the appropriate waste barrels need to be obtained and placed on the property and routinely moved to a common area for pick-up throughout the season.

We look forward to the 2010 season with great anticipation for all the kids in our Westwood Community.  Your Board of Directors cannot do it alone without your help.  If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to write or call me.
