The Weston Rattlers 12u went to Cooperstown, NY., June 4-10 to compete in the Cooperstown Dreams Park Youth Baseball National tournament.....and compete they did. The Rattlers were among 103 teams from across the nation invited to play in this prestigious tournament.
During the Skills Competition, prior to the beginning of the tournament, the Rattlers turned in a 8th place performance in the "Around the Horn Competition" and Nick Orlando made all Rattlers players and fans proud by finishing 3rd in the Home Run Derby.
The Rattlers played well in the seeding games with a record of 5-1. They started out 2-0 but then suffered 3-2 defeat at the hands of an excellent Las Vegas Slam team that eventually made the Elite 16. In the fourth game against the South Carolina Knights the Rattlers hit five home runs "back to back" and finished the game with a total of 7 homers resulting in a 8 run victory. The five consecutive home runs were hit by Nick Orlando, Jonathan Hernandez, Chris Valencia, Jordan Schulefand and Hector Lozada.
The Rattlers emerged from game 5 with a tough victory over a pesky Grand Slam Academy team from Austin, TX., by the score of 5-3. Game 6 of pool play proved to be one of the highlights of the tournament when the Rattlers easily defeated the #2 seed Litchfield Park Tigers from Phoenix, AZ. Before the game a coach who had seen the Tigers playearlier told Rattlers Coach Fletcher to "save your pitchers and concede the game because the Tigers will slaughter you!" That comment became the rallying cry for the Rattlers who played their best game of the tournament and beat the Tigers 9-2.
The team beat the Birmingham Sox and Mavericks Baseball in the first tow elimination games and bringing their record to 7-1 and into the Elite 16. The next contest was against the number one seeded Blaze from Bakersfield, CA. The Rattlers fell behind 3-0 after two innings but scrapped to score one in the third to bring it to 3-1. The score remianed unchanged until the last inning when the Rattlers added another run to make it 3-2. But the chase for the championship ended there as the Rattlers had the tying run on 3rd base with one out, but could not score....nevertheless, the Rattlers played a tournament to remember by going 7-2 and finishing this national tournament as the 9th ranked team!!!
