Mussafer fires first no-hitter in 19 years of regional play to lift Weston, Mass. to win

WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. – Michael Mussafer fired the first no-hitter in 19 years of regional play at West Deptford to lead Weston, Mass. to a 2-0 win over Brooklyn-Killingly, Conn. in an elimination game at the Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional on Monday night.

Mussafer threw just 79 pitches, walking two and striking out five. He faced one more than the minimum number of batters in his second appearance of the regional. In his first appearance of the tourney, Mussafer allowed four runs in 1/3 of an inning of work Friday against Naamans Little League of Wilmington, Del. But it was a far different story on Monday.

He threw 50 of his 79 pitches for strikes, although he almost lost it if not for a diving catch by center fielder Nick Neu to end the fourth inning.

Mussafer outdueled Jack Weaver, who was the tough luck loser for Brooklyn-Killingly. He allowed just three hits and one unearned loss in an equally impressive performance on a hot muggy night.

Weston scored both of its runs in the sixth. The first coming on a perfect suicide squeeze by pinch-hitter Gage Hartman. The second came on a throwing error later in the inning.

Ironically, Mussafer was the third pitcher to carry a no-hitter late into the game on Monday. Two earlier no-hit bids were broken up to lead off the fifth inning on Monday afternoon.

Weston will face Barrington, R.I. on Tuesday afternoon at approximately 2:30 p.m. in another elimination game.

Rockies Win 2008 Fall Cup Championship

Weston Three-peats as NELL 2008 Fall Champs

WESTON- OCTOBER 26 - The Weston 10/11-year-old team won the NELL Fall baseball Championship with a 9-2 win over Newton Central LL, powered by the strong offense that scored 143 runs during the regular season. Clutch hits from Ben Hamblett, Ryan Doorandish, Jack Fleckner, Lucas Cramer and Sam Wisnia  put the game away in the late innings.  The victory marked the third straight year that Weston has won the championship in this exciting fall league.   This championship capped a perfect 13-0 season for Weston. Manager Bob Peatman said, “This truly was a team accomplishment in every sense. It took focus; commitment and hard work by each player to make sure you had no let downs during the season. We truly had a different hero every game.”  During a 10-0 regular season a strong pitching staff of Will Greenberg, Alex Awad, Chase Peatman, Brad Peters and Ben Hamblett combined for three no-hitters, and a 0.52 ERA.   With solid defense from the entire team including Jed Perler, Josh White, Miller Ward and Matt Paul the Seadogs made it very difficult for opposing teams to get on the board, limiting opponents to a stingy average of 1.0 runs-per-game.

 Summer/Fall 2007 Champions

Weston 10's repeat Champions of NELL Fall League!

Octber 28th - WESTON - With a combined 12-0-1 record, the 10's defeated teams from Newton, Brookline, Needham and Belmont to capture the overall championship in the competitive NELL Fall travel league. Congrats to Manager Jeff Tocci and Coaches Mead, Peatman, Chapman and Bloom. Weston had a total of four teams in this league with three of them qualifying for the playoff rounds!

Weston 11s take Little League district crown!

This past Summer - Weston captured the 11-year old District Championship for the first time in Town history!

Weston - 7/19/07 - Forty years after the 1967 Red Sox rode a series of come-from-behind victories to their ``Impossible Dream' pennant, the Weston 11-and-under All-Stars have used the same formula to capture the Little League District 13 summer championship as well as a win in the first round of the Massachusetts state tournament that resumes tonight at Sandwich. En route to the town's first-ever 11-and-under district title, Weston (now 7-1) overcame huge deficits to pull out consecutive must-win contests against the previously unbeaten Wakefield American team last week. Down 7-1 in the second inning on July 11, the all-stars won 8-7 in eight innings; trailing 5-1 in the fifth the next night, they rallied again for a 6-5 triumph. And after falling behind 5-1 to District 16 champ Saugus in their first state tourney game at Weafer Park in Woburn on Sunday, the junior ``Cardiac Kids' did it yet again - scoring four times in the fourth to knot things up before prevailing 6-5 in seven. Manager Gary Leroy said that, although Weston has strong on-field leaders in slick-fielding shortstop Will Peatman, and the heavy hitting of center fielder David Helfer and catcher Noah Tocci, the key to its success has been that ``there is really no one and everyone who is indispensable on our team. Over the course of the eight games we've played, every single kid has helped us win at least one of them.' The rhythm of the summer was set early, as Weston trailed 5-0 in the first inning of its opener against Wakefield National before exploding for an 18-8 win behind pitcher Brett Rowe.
``That let the kids know that they had the ability to come back, and gave them confidence to keep doing it,' explains Leroy. Although the all-stars lost their next contest to the aforementioned Wakefield Americans, they've rattled off six straight victories since then - five of the come-from-behind variety. Two of their past three contests have gone beyond the normal six innings, and Weston players have grown adept at affixing their rally caps for late-game heroics. True to Leroy's word, the contributors have been numerous. In the July 11 game against Wakefield, Sam Rafla had two key RBI hits, including the game-winner on a single to right field in the eighth while Thomas Russo and Helfer pitched stellar relief over the last seven-plus innings. The next night, Weston sent 11 men to the plate in the fifth to wipe out its 5-1 deficit, with big hits coming from Russo, Henry Bator, Helfer, and Christian Bruce. Russo's second hit of the frame gave his club a 6-5 lead, which Griffin preserved with a perfect sixth inning of relief (including two strikeouts). Jamie Noonan and Blake Asis also had big hits in the Wakefield games, and alternate Max Grundy chipped in with three hits in an early-season contest after vacation conflicts prompted his one-game promotion from the 10-and-under squad. It was more of the same in Sunday's state tournament tilt, as the all-stars overcame more sloppy defense early behind pitchers Brooks Parker and Griffin to tie Saugus 5-5 on a three-run home run over the center-field fence at Woburn by Helfer - his first-ever Little League homer - and then win on an RBI hit from Tocci, who had stayed in the game despite breaking a finger back in the first inning.
``If we get behind early we just try harder,' said Russo. ``We believe in each other.' His father Tom Sr., a Weston coach who followed the '67 Sox as a grade-schooler and later attended dental school with Impossible Dream pitching ace Jim Lonborg, has enjoyed seeing the same attitude employed by his childhood heroes unfold here. ``These kids just never quit, and they've had great fan support behind them all the way,' he said. ``Now we've just got three more big games to win.'

Tom Skenderian, 60, top collegiate ballplayer known for loyalties

Tom Skenderian, 60, top collegiate ballplayer known for loyalties

By Bryan Marquard, Globe Staff | April 6, 2006

People still talk about two of his home runs. There was the drive they say that Tom Skenderian hit in the 1960s, while playing for Chatham, that flew about 500 feet before bouncing off the roof of the fire station, far beyond the right-field fence.

And there was the shot that cleared the lights at Murphy Field in Jamaica Plain and the rooftops of the three-deckers across the street. The ball was not found. 'That's still in the air, I think," said his longtime friend Ed Sherman, of Readville.

Thomas E. Skenderian, whose baseball exploits as a youth and young man were matched by his devotion to family and friends, died Monday of cancer. He was 60 and had lived in Weston with his wife, Dusty Rhodes, and their six children. 'This guy could hit the ball, but while he was good, he wasn't an egotist," said his brother, Donald of Millis. 'I think he was pretty humble about his feats." Mr. Skenderian was far more interested in his children and his friends. He remained close with several friends since they were boys together in Readville 50 years ago.

'His devotion to his family is legendary," said Sherman, who recalled that a couple of years ago Mr. Skenderian summoned him three days after returning home from surgery on his brain. He pulled on a baseball cap to cover the lengthy scar and asked Sherman to drive him to his children's sports events, where Mr. Skenderian would ask each coach if there was anything he could do to help out. 'I think we went to four games that day," Sherman said.

The youngest of four children, Mr. Skenderian was born in Boston and lived in Jamaica Plain, down the street from Doyle's pub. While in elementary school, he moved with his family to Readville and formed friendships that would last a lifetime. Last year, he traveled with six of those friends to watch the Red Sox during spring training in Florida. He graduated from Hyde Park High School, where he was captain of the baseball and hockey teams and an all-star in both sports.

At Brown University, he was the college's first baseball player to win the Ivy League batting championship and was awarded the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League Cup in 1966 for finishing with a .514 batting average. Mr. Skenderian was inducted into Brown's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1975.

He did not rely solely on his keen hand-eye coordination. Sherman recalled that as a youth, Mr. Skenderian set up a mirror in his family's basement so he could study his batting stance and would swing a lead-weighted bat more than 200 times every evening.

Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles after his sophomore year, he chose instead to finish college and was drafted by several teams after graduating, including the Red Sox. But during a summer off from Brown, Mr. Skenderian was batting in a Boston Park League game when he was hit by a sharp foul ball. 'It was a fluke pitch that struck at a very odd angle," said Bob Welby of Osterville, a friend from Readville who was at the game. Mr. Skenderian was wearing hard-lens contacts and the glass shattered into his left eye.

After Brown, he played a short time with the Red Sox affiliate in Jamestown, N.Y., but realized that his ability to see the stitches on a pitched ball had faded. 'The baseball sometimes appeared as big as a balloon," he told The Boston Globe in 1980, but he said it was no longer easy to hit.

Shaking off the disappointment, Mr. Skenderian started working in sales of Oriental rugs and formed his own company, Balloon Tycoon, which sold decorations for events for 25 years. As a father, he coached all of his children, encouraging each to fulfill his or her potential.

'He was as good as it gets," said Mr. Skenderian's oldest child, Thomas of Weston, known as T.K. 'Everybody looked up to him. So much of what we learned from him we try to exemplify every day."

Mr. Skenderian was first diagnosed with melanoma about 14 years ago, his brother said. The cancer metastasized several years ago and again more recently. 'Obviously his cancer bothered him, but it bothered him more that he wanted to see his girls through high school," his brother said. 'He outlasted everyone's expectations with this disease. He had a fighting spirit that carried him through -- he just had a passion for living," his son said.

Welby was with his friend when he died Monday. 'He was unconscious, or we thought he was, and I saw a tear come out of his right eye," Welby said. 'I'll always believe that he knew we were there and said, 'I've reached my point and this is it. I've fought the good fight and it's time now.' " In addition to his wife, son T.K., and brother, Mr. Skenderian leaves two other sons, Tucker and Tyler, and three daughters, Taylor, Turner, and Tanner, all of Weston; and two sisters, Rosemary Reynolds of Hampton, N.H., and Johanna Shaghalian of Narragansett, R.I. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow in St. Peter Episcopal Church in Weston. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Weston. © Copyright 2006 Globe Newspaper Company.
