2009 STRONG SUMMER FOR THE 11'S

2009 STRONG SUMMER FOR THE 11'S - WESTON - While the Weston Senior team was capturing the attention of the Weston faithful the town's U-11 Little League cohorts were off making their own Weston baseball history. The Weston Wildcat U-11 Williamsport team - led by manager Jeff Tocci and coach Jeff Mead - captured the District 13 championship in Woburn, beating a talented Wakefield team in extra innings. The Weston team beat Assabet, Wakefield and Woburn to gain a spot in the District 13 final, again having to face Wakefield. The Wakefield Nationals got off to an early lead when Weston's ace, Seve Tocci, was brought in to shut down Wakefield's loud bats. Weston battled back with six runs in the third on key hits by Andrew Hall, Tocci, Bryce Grundy and Jason Schwartz.  Solid fielding by Ben Hamblett, Charlie Siegrist, Henry Hall, James Bruneau, Jack Fleckner, Max Barsamian, and Jack Daley kept Wakefield quiet on the basepaths for four innings. Wakefield's bats came alive again against reliever Jason Schwartz to send the game into extra innings. Schwartz led off the seventh inning, stole second base, moved to third on a sacrifice by Fleckner and scored on Hamblett's sacrifice fly to center field to win the game. The Weston 11s became District 13 champions, thus qualifying for sectional play in Swampscott.Weston mercied Swampscott 10-0 in four innings with some very loud bats and shutout pitching from Tocci in the first round of sectional play. Tocci had seven strikeouts and allowed only one hit while blanking Swampscott. The Weston offense was led by Grundy, Andrew Hall, Henry Hall, Schwartz, Hamblett and Siegrist allowing a continuum of baserunners and solid RBI basehit baseball. Tocci's three-run homer sealed Weston's offense en route to the four-inning slaughter-rule win. Stellar defensive play by outfielders Fleckner, Barsamian, Robert Ivey, Bruneau and Jack Daley showcased Weston's trademark impenetrable fielding fundamentals. The win allowed Weston to move on to a sectional semifinal playoff berth versus Tewksbury. In the semifinal sectional playoff stellar pitching by Grundy allowed Weston to jump out to a two-run lead. However, the tenacious Tewksbury team evened the score after the fifth inning and the teams stayed deadlocked, sending the game into an extra-inning extravaganza under the lights with Tewksbury prevailing 4-3. The loss forced the Weston 11s into a situation calling for the team to win an improbable three consecutive sectional playoff game schedule and forcing Weston to commute back to Swampscott for eight consecutive evenings of Williamsport playoff games.
Weston faced North Reading for a 10-0 mercy win in four innings behind the tag team pitching of Tocci and Schwartz. Solid offense, led by textbook drag bunting of Henry Hall gave Weston the offensive jump start that allowed it to end the game early. Weston again had to face Swampscott in its next game. The Cats rallied behind the off-speed pitching of Hamblett. Timely offensive power supplied by Grundy, Schwartz, Fleckner, Tocci, Ivey and Andrew Hall allowed for a 5-2 win and the opportunity to face Tewksbury for the sectional playoff final. In the sectional final versus Tewksbury. Weston's bats came out blazing to insure a different scenario for Grundy than the first meeting against Tewksbury. Doubles by Tocci, Bruneau and Hamblett, along with sharp singles from Barsamian, Daley , Andrew Hall, Fleckner, Grundy, Schwartz, Henry Hall and Ivey provided sufficient baserunning and runs for a fifth-inning game ending 10-0. As District 13 champions and Massachusetts Sectional champions the Weston U-11 'Cats earned a playoff berth into the State Williamsport championship.
